The "lost" Ancient Roman Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus

Hi! and welcome back to Exploring Art with Alessandro!
Today I am going to talk about the most important Ancient Roman temple: the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus!
Why "lost"? Because what we have today are just some ruins hidden in the Rome underground, but enough to make us able to reveal a lot of its secrets!

Thanks for the great presentation, Alessandro! I live in the Washington, DC area. After the Capitol troubles and chaos here, I was looking up the roots of the word "Capitol Hill" in Washington. And it comes to Rome's Capitoline Hill!! And I understand this Temple was there. But I'm still trying to figure out the connection to Government. Was the Capitoline Hill in Rome also connected to government, as well as Jupiter's Temple? Thank you!! ! I'm American and my heritage is Persian/Iranian by the way. And I lived in Rome for 6 months many years ago! LOVE IT!! Thank you, again!! ~ Afsaneh

Hi Afsaneh, I am really happy you liked the video! That's a good question! -- Capitoline Hill was the first Roman settlement, so the most important hill in Rome. It was considered the heart of the Roman power and that's why the main temple of that time, The Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus (called also Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus), has been built there. Still today the Capitoline Hill is considered the central power of Rome: the City Hall is there. So that's why also the connection with U.S. Government :-) -- I hope now everything is clearer. Thank you again for watching and please share my videos, so you can help me with this project :-) Alessandro

@@ExploringArtwithAlessandro Thanks so much, Alessandro. I lived in Rome and knew most of this - including Michaelangelo's design for the piazza! But when you say it was the "heart of Roman power" - were there any buildings other than a religious temple there in the pre-Republic days? For example, where was the Senate during the same time as the Temple of Jupiter? Grazie mille! ~ Afsaneh

@@AfsanehKZread Oh yes there were. Actually there were at least other 6 temples. However, talking about no-religious buildings during the pre-Republic days, for sure the most important was the Roman Forum. To be precise it has been built on the side of the hill (because it required a lot of space), but it is considered part of the Capitoline Hill and it was the place where Rome was ruled :-)

My Italian Grandparents were from Northern Italy, my other Greek from Crete. I was always fascinated how both cultures interacted and influenced each other throughout the centuries. It would be interesting to contrast an Etruscan temple of Jupiter to that of a Archaic Greek temple of Zeus, and explain the similarities and differences. Thanks for your video & subscribed. Well done!

Ciao Andrew! You have been really lucky to grow up in such a combined cultural environment :-) You are right: it would be really interesting and I will consider it for one of the next topics :-) I am glad you like the channel and thank you for your support. I was just reading about the legend of the head last night, I'm very much into the ancient Roman world, although I am not Italian, I've always had an affinity for the gods of Rome, pre-Christe, sub-Deus. And although I didn't expect him to be, Jupiter has really been the Deity that seems to pop up in my life very often, unexpectedly, hah. Could you go into the Arx, and the Auguruculum? And the Temple of Ivppiter feretrius? Please?

Hi! Don't worry: you don't need to be Italian to appreciate Roman art ;-) I am preparing more videos about this art style. However in the meantime, if you like Jupiter you should watch this video where I talk about the first temple dedicated to him: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kYugmKuDnJWneLA.html remember to subscribe and share, so you can enjoy more videos :-) Thank you

Why is there so little left of any of the ancient monuments and temples in Rome?

Hi Walter, actually there is still a lot if we consider that most of the monuments are (more or less) 2,000 years old and they survived to earthquakes, wars, invasions... just the conditions of most of them are not the best, but there is still a lot and we'll discover more together :-)

A joke I like to say is "Christianity is Judaism for Romans", as I very much enjoy the unique amalgamation of culture that was born from the spread of Christianity across the Graeco-Roman world. I suspect the Capitoline Triad evolved/flowed quite easily into what became the Holy Trinity.

I do not have a small shadow of a doubt that this is the origin of the disgusting doctrine of Christendom's Trinity. That's very typical of the corrosive sect Roman Catholic.
