Large ships wake can look identical in the right bottom conditions ..like reefs where the ship sailing near top speed since its open ocean and the reef protrudes...but yeah, rogue waves aren't rare.but are hard to capture because they form so quickly usually and are gone just as quickly....this boat size and closeness to the water actually has the opposite effect on the typical images of rogue waves captured from ships high above the water... This size wave will certainly capsize smaller motorboats..sailboats will most often right themselves or lean all the way over on their side and get pushed a few feet by it then right thselves...as long as all the hatches are secured the sailboat can usually be fine...powerboats don't though and once over your done for

I was in the USCG on a buoy tender that worked the coast up and down Washington and Oregon. In that water every wave was a rogue wave. Heading out to sea through the Colombia River bar at night with waves breaking jetty to jetty was always concerning because you could hear the water hitting the huge jetty rocks a mile away. They don't call it the 'Graveyard of the Pacific' for nothing.

Lol I remember about 25 years ago when I was working on a big supply boat in the Gulf of Mexico, a random rogue wave hit and washed over the stern, knocking me down and into the H bit. I wasn't hurt but I was extremely angry because my shift had just started and I was already soaking wet. So I went inside, changed clothes, got back outside, and another rogue wave hit knocking me down and sending me flying across the deck. I was soaked again and so much more angry that I ripped my hard hat off and threw it at the deck only to watch it bounce and fly overboard.

I am in the Pacific NW and often fish the Ocean, so I have been on the Ocean when these waves came through and to my constant attention to what is always happening, I've been lucky to see the waves coming then head into the waves before the wave grew and broke but other boats haven't been so lucky as I was seeing two boats wiped out.

I wonder if rogue waves are caused by underwater earthquakes that are either too small or too far away to be felt by boatsmen, but nonetheless create formidable waves.

Few tips for countering rogue waves: Bigger vessels with slower speeds: Take the wave head on, keep constant power applied when cresting and apply more power when at the peek to generate forward momentum as much as possible so to not get caught in the “splash” -Medium vessels with moderate movement speeds: Try as much as possible to identify where the peek of the wave is and avoid it. Take lower side of the wave head on and apply power when cresting and more power when at peek. -Smaller vessels: try to avoid head on contact, attempt to surf the wave to the low side and crest with speed. Experienced personnel will know the weight of the vessel they operate and will generally know how to maneuver through the situation. Every scenario is different so experience and awareness of your cargo will play a huge part in these high risk situations.

Went out in my 26 foot Hunter sail boat. Four young people went with me (early 20"s, 3 guys and a girl). Briefed them on safety. Made sure they had life vests on and told them the vital importance of never giving in to panic - and that if we had an emergency requireing us to go into Lake Huron, we would do so calmly. Calm Captain in this video knew how to take the wave. Well done.

I spent the first 15 years or so afloat telling people that "rouge waves" were just poor excuses for mistakes, poor navigation and exaggeration. That all changed when early one oddly calm morning in the north atlantic I was nearly capsized by one. Never been so frightened in my life as I saw it rolling towards port side. 😬
