I got to see this movie today with my family. It was really good. I was an extra in the film. I was in the opening scene at the hardware store. You see me two times in the scene. You first see me talking to the hardware store clerk before he goes to Otto with the rope then you see me a second time waiting in line. I was wearing a grey winter jacket with jeans. I got to do an internship on set while they were filming. The internship took place where they were filming scenes where Otto watches the kids over. Being an extra and doing internship was a fun experience. Marc Forster and Tom Hanks were kind people and it was nice to work with them. It’s something I’ll always look back on and be happy that I did it.

Water Works at full force for me! 😭😭 Yesterday, I went to see this movie at the theater. It is once again, one of Tom Hanks' cup of tea. I highly recommend it! Walking in, I really didn't know what to expect. But as I watched, I quickly recognized in Tom Hanks, characteristics of a grumpy old boss I used to have, that became my good friend for 32 years. His name was Greg, may he rest in peace! Just about every detail of Otto's character was Greg! And so the movie took me on an emotional roller coaster through every scene that reminded me of him. There were so many, I had to constantly catch my tears with my popcorn napkin, before they reached the bottom of my cheeks. At the end of the movie, my friend asked me if I had liked it? And I was too emotional to attempt to answer. But as soon as we got to the car, I broke down crying as I related my experience with Greg's friendship and all the similarities between Otto and him. They even looked alike! I finalized my grief by sharing how sad it was for me to say our final goodbyes before he passed away. We talked to each other through facetime, while he was on his hospital bed, 775 miles away.🥺 And shortly after, he was gone. All sentimalism aside, I really enjoyed this movie. It is full of wonderful acting by both, Hanks and his amazing Mexican supporting actress, Mariana Treviño. It is a funny and oh so sweet movie. Oscar worthy performances from both! I encourage you to make a date, and go to your nearest theater and catch it. You will enjoy it, I am sure!

I agree that Tom’s movies over the past 10-15 years haven’t been stellar.. and this is a return to top form. The best Tom Hanks movies are the ones where you don’t feel like you’re watching “Tom Hanks” but rather Forrest.. or Andy etc. Those who say this movie was overly sentimental ..likely haven’t experienced much loss or depression etc.

I saw the original, and I think some stuff is lost in translation. A Swedish grump is much more brutally blunt to begin with, as being asocial is much more prevalent there. It is less lashing out, but more stonewalling contempt for the rest of the world. Also, the falling apart from a friend works in the Swedish context, as the silent pride keeps both sides from even trying to mend the relationship. Otherwise, I think since Hanks himself saw the original and heralded it as a masterpiece, he remakes it with a sense of love and respect to at least try to make it justice.

So far, 2023 has been great. M3gan and Otto. Granted Otto is a 2022 release, but I just saw it today. I like the trailer, but had low expectation because many of the reviews said the original movie was much better. But like Austin, having not watched the original to compare, I really like this movie. Mariana Treviño was great as Marisol. Of course, she had an easier role as the comic to Tom Hanks' straight angry man. I would give it 8 of 10. I found the flashback telling confusing and interesting at the same time. The slow reveal helps the story, but I do wonder if it would still work if they told us the back story in the beginning. Really enjoy the movie even though it was much darker than I expected. I thought he was just an angry old man.

  • @ssesssusman9417

This was advertised, everywhere, I couldn’t escape it back then. Until it’s whole spotlight was shifted. The trailers were annoying, and the concept seemed familiar you to me, mostly because I didn’t know there were scenes of implications of wanting to commit suicide. Months after release, I finally checked it out when I was given the opportunity to watch on Netflix. Honestly, I was surprised, it was endearing. Otto’s character arc where he changes for the better was pretty good. And that ending… I mean I was semi-expecting it, and semi-not, but damn I can’t believe they actually had the balls. I would recommend, 10.5/10.

Saw this on a plane. What a dreadfully made film full of wannabe indie tropes, and awful cinematography clichés. So bad.
