I know right? I’m so offended they had to play identity politics in this video. First of all, the horses formerly known as stallions are “Zeerer’s” from now on please.. And the broodnares formerly known as broodmares or mares are to be referred to from now on as either “whirs” or just nothing at all!! Just complete silence!!

What they fail to mention is that the herd stallion would have already mated with that mare in heat and possibly several times. Even if the bachelor stallion had been successful, the foal she would carry would likely be the herd stallion's.

The life of a wild horse is not easy. All those white marks on the herd stallion's legs are probably scars from many combats over the years. When they rear and paw at one another the legs take most of the hits. Someday a youngster will injure the old guy to the point that he can't run or defend himself and he'll become a mountain lion's meal.

I’ve witness this happen many times actually. Not so uncommon as you might think. Male Elk and Male Zebra have been observed to do the same when two males are fighting. Opportunity for the less dominant and less dominant horse can go in. The daughters that stick with the Stallion in the herd are usually more keen to try and seek out mating when the Stallion is busy fighting bachelors. Ive also witnessed male horses mounting each other. Crazy stuff in the animal world. Lol

@@_Chessa_ i guess that is a way of preventing inbreeding. The daughter can have a chance to mate with a male that they aren’t related. I saw it in wolves. The male refused to mate with his daughters. The females were in heat & wanted to mate & one saw an opportunity in an outsider male.

....and then they could switch roles... But then the girls might decide they're sick of all this mating and getting pregnant and labour, birthing etc and try sparring instead. With the rest of the girls, since they"d soon be crushed by the mighty stallions if they striped fighting them. So best just fight the girls instead. But where would that leave the stallions after they fought their male battles? Bring stuck with trying to mate with each other? As in "Make Love, Not War, Mate. Peace, Man! You may be a black stallion and me a white one, but we're mighty brothers who love each other.... Say, have you ever had strange feelings, like that you may not be male, after all? Don't be shy. The girls are too busy fighting each other. But you can confide in me... Wanna try it? You might like it better with the lads than the girls... And we also know where the water is... Cm'on, mate. Let's get it on and forget all this fighting stuff... ". .

The issue is that its not the stallions who decide who gets to mate, but the mares. And usually of one or more stallions are allowed to remain on the herds territory, that means they are liked by the mares. It is probably more likely the mares will come defend the stallion if he needs help, than just accept some new horse on their land.

Stallions dont keep a harem of mares. Thats so outdated and wrong. The stallion is allowed to remain on the mares territory since he has proven himself strong and healthy. When other stallions come around and wanna ”apply” to stay on the territory instead, they are not fighting for a harem. They are fighting to show who is the strongest and thus is wanted by the mares. The mares rule the herd, and stallions are relatively low in value to them.

I don’t think mares are particularly picky when it comes to breeding, as they go into heat, implying they’ll breed with whomever is there. The lead stallion just postures to drive away potential competition. The lead mare controls where the group goes for food
