11pm ish. Here on Cape Cod. This was a very enjoyable and relatable video for me. I've been a record collector since I was a kid, mid 60s, Beatles etc. I'm 68 now. My first full time record store job was from 1977-1979 at N.Eng. Music City out of Boston. I can relate so much to the record store music biz then. Crazy record store parties, promos, sending records back to the companies, Malverne, Polygram, Capitol, WEA etc. It was a great time, late 70s, the bands and shows.....tickets were so cheap! Seeing The Tubes, Zappa, Cheap Trick still playing a club in 1978. It was a wonderful time. Almost took it for granted at the time and looking back, the biz was SO MUCH better than now! It's shit now.....gone.., extinct! A great video MAS.....would love more like it, Don S

Have a couple of pals who I can talk records with, but that's all. You're fortunate having so many people with a similar interest. And that's not counting all of us out in the vinyl community. Another terrific piece, Mazzy.

Hey Mazz - another enjoyable session. I 'Discoged' my collection last summer. It took me a couple of weeks but it was definitlely worth the effort. To reiterate your and your guest's point - my Beatles Capital collection from the mid-70s was the worse. I got through but I really should go back and see how badly I did - a confused process.

Typing in & searching the deadwax on Discogs has been the easiest way to ID specific pressings, at least in my experience.

The grass is always greener! It's funny, but growing up in the UK during the 1970s, it was American imports that were cool and very exotic. To own a US import weeks or even months before it was released in the UK was impressive although quite expensive. Even British acts would often release records in the US before the UK like Ringo Starr's album "Ringo" which seemed to be an American import for quite a while before its British release. Also, the thick US sleeves were quite a shock to those of us used to the flimsy British ones and seemed way better. The fact that British pressings supposedly sounded superior to American ones wasn't relevant at all back then.

Interesting topic: been wondering how long before someone on one of these podcasts came clean re insider record store pilferage. The All Things Must Pass documentary damn sure didn’t touch on it. My first job at Tower Sunset, circa ’74, before being assigned to the tape department, was as a security guard, checking customer's bags at the entrance. Didn’t take long before I began to ask myself, Hmmm, what’s to stop me from bagging a dozen albums and carting them out to my car? Because if I just had those dozen specific albums (new Eagles, 10cc, Robin Trower, whatever) that would complete my collection. And so, heart in my throat, I went for it. Wasn’t but another couple of days before I told myself, Hmmm, man oh man, if I just had another dozen albums, my collection would really, REALLY be complete. So, same story. Tower Sunset had a basketball hoop set up in the back of the parking lot, someplace for employees to kill time during our breaks. And I remember playing HORSE, betting up to $100 a shot. Thing is, if you lost, you didn’t pay the other guy in cash, you simply let him work your cash register shift. Trust me, sharing even this much is only the very, very tip of the iceberg. What took place there among at least a third of the employees is absolutely unbelievable. But I’d better stop here. Am I proud of it? Course not. Chalk it up to being young and stupid while working at one of the world’s great record stores.

Before I worked in the biz a couple of times there was a cashier at Tower Columbus and Bay SF would take $5 from me and give a bag of 5-10 records. He didn’t know me but I was a regular. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I first became aware of the deadwax (runout grooves in the UK) information in 1984. A guy called James Michael Hughes wrote a 4-page article in Hi-Fi Answers about it. It transformed my LP collecting. Mazzy, a bit of advice about uploading your collection to Discogs. I would start with the top shelf starting from the left, do about 12 LPs a day and you will get there eventually. Once you have it all up, you can then go back and make it more accurate over time.

Yep, IF I ever actually go to record stores again I do have a lighted magnifying glass that I always took with me to read the deadwax. BTW, you guys are right about Discogs... What is strange is that I am about 2/3 the way through my records and just now when I'm entering what I call my 'Black' section (Black artists, EWF, Isley Bros, Jacksons, etc., but not Funk, it has it's own section 😊) But, just as I started entering albums from this section, I frigg'n SWEAR, *NONE* of the bloody deadwax matches anything on Discogs! It is driving me up the wall! I mean almost EVERY damn album doesn't have a match, it is SO frustrating. I had not noticed that with the first 1700 albums or so except once in a great while, but for some odd reason almost NONE of the albums in this section match anything there. Also too, since you mainly are talking about your 'Shift' (not to be confused of course with your 'Shifty' nature) I don't know if I can send you pictures of the way I have my albums stored, like by way of e'mail or whatever, but just for me personally, I refuse to do it the way everybody does it. Not to be 'cool' or different or anything, but I just don't like looking at all the spines and having them go from floor to ceiling. ALL of my albums, and granted I only have about 2600 or so, are front facing JUST like in a record store so that you can flip through ALL of them. I built simple shelves and have either record crates or boxes with the albums facing front. All you really need to do is just adjust your thinking from the way EVERYBODY does it, vertically, and you only need to give yourself about 2.5 feet out from the wall, and you can easily have about 100-150 in each row facing out and then you can easily have say 2 rows, one on the floor, and then another row above on the shelf. Even in my small room, it works out really well. And, I never *EVER* have to strain to see the tiny print on the spines, I can lovingly and gloriously flip through them all just like a record store 😁

Love to hear these stories of the old record store days, some great experiences you both had and I truly appreciate you sharing them. Jackson Five and the Ramones, crazy. I worked at the headquarters at Best Buy in the early 90's as a merchandise analyst helping buying music for the 200 odd stores at the time. It was CDs of course during that time but every now and then we'd get some free vinyl and a band would come through. I met Lisa Loeb and Todd Rundgren at our offices in Minnesota on their promotional tours and they both were cool to talk to. Please keep sharing the stories!

I'm not 100% on your wavelength for musical preferences, BUT our general "life experience" & personal history are so similar, I'm always captivated by your feed. I was lucky to work in an indy record store from '76 to '87, and was heavily "into it." I also share your "hat positive" status, it's an eccentricity now, but I'm still gonna do it. Trouble us I have a gigantic 7 7/8 head & can't find my size for many styles. I ALWAYS put LP's in outer sleeves, ring wear on a cover is a deal breaker for me!

Nice video, gentlemen, but I disagree with the idea "There's always room." Instead, the idea should be "I haven't listen to this in five years. Do I really need to keep this? Wouldn't it be better to sell it/give it away?" If you want something more Zen, go with "If a record is never played, does it loose its voice?"
