I have just one question. If hoyo goes out of their way to queer code a gay relationship that would be canon if not for the guidelines, than where are canon hetero relationships? In my view they don’t intend to canonize any relationships in the game of whatever sexuality because it’s like keeping idols single preserves their popularity.

I think it’s just a result of not meeting a lot of queer people in real life, and only hearing about them online or from media, therefore developing an idea of queer people as something performative rather than genuine. And to be honest, I feel like a lot of people who use this critique towards queer coding are either very young or lack life experience, so I can’t bring myself to be angry, because they still have much to learn, and it’s not like I wasn’t also kinda homophobic before coming to terms with my orientation and identity.

With the whole Zhongchi and Eimiko age difference thing, I want to point out that canonically in genshin, relationships between humans and immortal or non human beings like adepti and youkai exist. Take yanfei and ganyu for examples, their parents were adepti and humans, making them both half adepti. Plus, ships in genshin don't necessarily follow "chronological age", but more by their appearance. For example (don't take this too seriously, just an example), the reason nahida in ships is problematic isn't because of her age, but because of her childlike appearance. this is the same for adult ships, just because zhongli is rex lapis and is over 3000 years old, doesn't take away from the fact that he stll looks like a man in his late twenties or thirties, and the same goes for Eimiko. Edit: with that said, it's important to know that it's okay if you're uncomfortable with these kind of ships, just try and stay away from them instead of attacking anyone who ship these ships

Assuming Yae was still a child(1-99 years old), this would technically make her a child. But they’re both adults now so…idc

Not just her appearance though, besides Dori and maybe Sigewinne, all the kid characters are kids for their respective species. Yaoyao is a child by human standards. Nahida is a child by Irmunsul branch standards, and Klee is a child by elf standards. They may have lived more years but that only gives them experience not maturity which is why child/adult ships are so toxic because there’s a clear power imbalance of maturity and control the adult would have over the child

The reason they have these tassels was because xingqiu originally made a tassel for chongyun as a symbol of his liking of chongyun and his belief that chongyun will one day become a great exorcist. They also said that the tassels are meant to be a symbol of their friendship. These tassels may imply that they are very close yet haven’t exactly fully learned to understand their romantic feelings. It is also important to note that it was confirmed by the character designer that the two were designed to be counterparts not only in character design but also in elements, talents, fighting styles, and party composition.

Idk man, in my headcanon they are just good friends. Nothing wrong if you wanna ship them, but i feel that you can't just have 2 characters in genshin being just friends and people not shipping them, those 2 above as an example. Me and my friends act more or less the same as this two, cuz at some point when you are close enough with someone it becomes ok to do this kind of jokes. I also like to believe, jokingly, that genshin players don't have good friends and don't know the difference between being gay and being gay with a bro.

@@marcoxd2 Exactly, there is plenty of ships I don't ship for a lot of the same reasons, like how I see their relationship or relationships around them that effect them, e.g being Furina and Neuvillette, i personally see them ONLY and family, and really hate the ship between them, HOWEVER i'm not going to go attack someone for liking that ship because it's completely legal, same as Xiaoven, i don't ship them mainly because i see Venti and Zhongli's relationship more as a sibling relationships while not actually being siblings, and Xiao and Zhongli are very much portrayed to be father and son in the fandom which i agree with, but again I understand why people ship it and just move along and go along with my day.

Honestly there’s no way that Genshin could be seen as straight just because of Aether and Lumine being interchangeable. Xiao, Ayaka, Lyney, Noelle, Albedo, and Keqing all blatantly have feelings for the Traveller, so there’s no way to not see them as bi unless the same interaction suddenly changes meaning based on the gender of the recipient.

Which is a very deliberate design choise. There are already instances in the game, where a character reacts differently whether you are with Aether or Lumine. So we know, that hoyo can differentiate between the two, if they want to. Them not doing it is a conscious choice.

@@tenhaaaa idk if you are like joking or half joking, but I still wanna said it: A lot of times these characters shows being a little flirty (except Lyney, this man is a STRAIGHT UP FLIRTY) with the Traveler no matter the gender or showing interest, also by acting exactly like a person who is shy around the crush but with the Traveler (Noelle and no matter the gender, again). Although idk why so many people see Ayaka having a crush on traveler, I didn't see anything suspicious like I saw with the others, or maybe I'm just blind idk I can be that too

I absolutely love watching these video essays. I think another worthwhile mention is Xiao because put simply he seems to be absolutely head over heels for traveler no matter if the player has picked Lumine or Aether, and it just gets even better with the Poetry event happening right now.

@@drakewasaloverboy There have been plenty of homosexual relationships recorded in stories throughout history. E referenced a classical Chinese story with a homosexual relationship within this video. It is obvious that homosexuality has existed at least since the beginnings of story telling. There have also been documented cases of homosexual relationships in monogamous animals such as penguins and so it is more than likely that humans have always had members of our species that are homosexual.

If you do another one of these, Razor x Bennett is a ship I’d really like to see. They have symbolism with the Windblume festival cutscene showing them with two butterflies, which is symbolism in Chinese culture for soulmates. They also tend to be a package deal in Mondstat events. And Bennett writes the poem during one of the Windblumes where he Razor’s help and Razor says that the writing makes him feel tingly. They have more but I can’t think of it off the top of my head.

I don't have a lot of other Queer GI ships that I feel are implied (I'm kinda scared that I'm just being delusional) but I think Amber and Eula are also Queercoded (their interactions speak for themselves. The bath, the dance, Eula being protective of Amber when there is danger, and also the fact that Eula is hated by her family and by the others and that she only find acceptance with the Knights kinda seems like a common trope for Queer characters that get rejected for their sexuality) So if you make a part 3 could you talk about them?

What I really find fascinating about Genshin and how it treats romance is that it leaves it vague and relies more on subtle interactions and voice lines then actually straight up confirming or denying a relationship. Sometimes a ship feels more platonic to me then romantic but someone else might interpret it as romantic and vice versa which is really interesting in my opinion. Also this is a very well made video. ❤ Edit: I really hate it when authors will just say that ‘A’ and ‘B’ are dating without actually writing or depicting a relationship at all. An example I can think of is Sakura and Sasuke. The opposite of that would probably be Mei and Kiana since those two are clearly in love or at the very very least care DEEPLY for each other.

Keeping things vague is a double edged sword tbh. On one hand, you get the community active and alive in discussing and posting about a variety of ships. On the other, it'll just spark unhealthy discourse and toxicity over who has the most sensible ship.

@@f4llenleaves I do agree and I hate the extremes some shippers go to for their ships. I just prefer relationships to be written in a more ambiguous way as it feels more real and personal. I can relate to Xingqiu and Chongyun’s relationship but I feel disconnected from Romeo and Juliet. I also think that context and media also oaky a factor in shipping and keeping things vague. Like Genshin is an ongoing game that relies on Gacha for revenue which leads them to purposely keep relationships vague in order to appeal to everyone. The overall narrative of Genshin also can’t move on at the same pace as other media as Genshin is structured into defined patches that can only contain so many new quests and characters that are meant to market themselves which leads to SO MANY ships being formed. The beautiful designs also encourage shipping. Genshin also attracts people from all ages which includes young teens who make up the bulk of shippers and the more mature middle aged adults who have little interest in shipping. Now compare this strategy to the abundance of Otome Isekai novels and manhwas where the main character is little more then a self insert who only exists to be romanced by the male leads. Shipping wars here tend to be more clear and simplistic with the ML x MC, 2nd ML x MC and maybe a wild card like a slash ship. The interactions between characters tend to be either flat or overly romantic. The designs are also hit or miss the vast majority of the time. OI also attracts young people but the limited amount of characters also limits the amount of ships possible. Now both fandoms have a significant queer culture and acts like a safe space for people of all sexualities and genders. Sorry for kinda rambling but the TLDR is that I feel like the vague relationship thing benefits Genshin in the long run.

Personally, I’m AroAce, so having everything in genshin be vague means that relationships can be interpreted as both platonic or queer or romantic, and either way, everyone wins. I get to analyze friendship dynamics, and you guys get queer rep. It’s a very weird (and maybe unstable) middle ground where everyone is happy. I didn’t quite know how to phrase this without coming off as slightly offensive in the last video, but your first comment put my thoughts into words perfectly so thanks for that. :D

To me, I read this sort of keeping things vague more as placating those who can't handle possible queerness in their games by giving themselves plausible deniability. Certainly it helps those who want to read these as platonic relationships, but it does feel like if you have to read queerness into the relationship then you just don't want to commit to defining the relationship, as if you didn't write these characters with a specific relationship in mind.

The fact that the Poetry event had more moments for Xingyun. I just finished it and the ending of the event was so funny between the two. Also once again E slayed

I mean, I haven’t finished the event yet but... I'm convinced Xingqiu wrote the leaf poem. It's perfectly his writing style and there was just... no explanation??? Chongyun even said that XINGQIU told him poems sometimes are written just to pour your heart out! I.. I can't take this anymore, maybe I'm going crazy lol (Also, I took too many screenshots too lol I saw their hairs from 2 miles away and I said YESSS)

I think something that homophobes often forget is that there is no single monolithic way a relationship can be expressed. Relationships can have so many different types of dynamics, scenarios, circumstances... a character doesn't have to literally state that they are in love or visibly express it, there are plenty of ways that romantic relationships happen which dont include physical or direct verbal intimacy, and just rely on subtleties to tell the story to the viewer. Like a good example of that premise from this video is Cynonari, I do think they love each other, but not in a passionate or brooding way, just a wholesome loving bond between two guys, and that's a totally valid form of romance

It's funny because you can still have canonical confirmation of a character being queer or trans and you'd still have a bunch of weirdos mald over it. Something something "it's just a drawing" or the saying goes (because I noticed a lot of the time, people like that happen to be lolicons for whatever reason).

i think the biggest problem in the fandom (apart from the homophobes) is that a lot of people tend to label many queer ships as "problematic" due to a piece of evidence that they don't even give proper consideration. the whole "grooming" eimiko allegations and how people were quick to use the "siblings" line out-of-context to justify hating cynari are just the tip of the iceberg. it's alright to dislike a ship. what's not alright is purposefully targeting people who like the ship and criminalizing them. i see this a lot with minors on the internet, even queer minors. if you don't like something, just hit the block button! sometimes i forget that queer people are regarded as a minority. to me, it's so obvious that certain characters are purposefully coded to be queer. but i also understand that there's people who don't see it, people who aren't queer and don't realize how impactful coding can be in our community. thank you for taking the time to make this video and educating people!

It does seem to be a younger thing - the criminalizing of ships they don't like. I hate to see it, because 20 years ago fandom only really had to worry about hateful people outside of fandom crying "what about the children." Now real, harmful accusations are being levied against disliked ships just because they prefer a character with someone else. Makes me wanna smack people. All it takes is for one "Moms for Freedom" Karen to see you saying "Genshin fandom is glorifying grooming!" and watch how fast your fandom websites get taken down - because the site's owner would much, much rather delete everything you and all your mutuals have posted in the past 5 years than piss off some conservative church group. Purity purges happen in online sites again and again, and these current "Puriteens" are inviting another one with everything they've got.

@@Witchfrog25 they do actually, i just... didn't know. the second time it was a shitpost compilation that was vaguely fandom so i can see why it was taken down (though by that same logic, the weird diaries that people keep on ao3 should also be removed) but the first time, it was actually meta (which, again, i didn't know was a thing). while it wasn't refined meta per say it should have still been allowed. now i'm too terrified to post on my main because i'm up to my second strike and i really do not want to get banned. also, yes the exact language they used was "tumblr-like." also one of my other works was deleted because it was crossposted on wattpad which i'm 95% sure is actually allowed but whatever

I just think many Genshin fans are really young and still haven't caught up on internet culture. They care a lot about what's canon and what's not and they need to be right because they are children. Internet has been around for a long time and the people who know ships know that they don't have to make sense. Ships are used to find and enjoy fun and diverse character dynamics and often them not being tied to canon makes them WAY more interesting. In the early days this was pretty clear.

as a hi3 player it's actually so insane to me when people say things like "nooo mhy would never include gay people in their games" like kiamei, bronseele and sakukallen don't exist with actual outright confirmation 😭 just because they can't confirm things anymore due to censorship doesn't mean they'll stop telling queer stories, which is evident time and time again

@@dave1346 i'm not trying to imply they're the same, it's moreso a thing of it not being so far fetched that mihoyo would feature canonical queer relationships in their games because they have a history of having queer relationships (even aside from kiamei and ggz, they're present in hi3 as well, for example the sakukallen interactions in sakura samsara) in their other ips yes, hi3 and gi are seperate games, but the point is that saying queer relationshops are this super far-fetched thing to happen in genshin (which is what i'm pointing out) is not true

@@dave1346 maybe you never said that, but there are people who do. mhy got promoted from party branch to party committee in the ccp in 2021 and are under stricter rules now, even with hi3 they got a lot less explicit with it as the game went on. the reason it's "only remembered for lesbianism" is because that is the current conversation topic and the topic of the video. even in terms of genshin fandom, i've seen hi3 brought up for lore purposes (more often than i've seen it brought up for proving queer relationships in genshin) once again, for me at least, it's less to do with existing queer expies and moreso to do with the fact that they've established that they include queer characters in their ips

Some comments don't seem to get the point of the video. The argument isn't that "these relationships are objectively canon", it's that Genshin Impact is a queer game. Just read the title of the video. So many people are arguing that "this video is wrong because xingyun, cynari, or eimiko isn't canon" but it's not about their relationship status itself. It's about the nature of their interactions, their behaviors, and even their designs. "Queerness," in its barest essence, comes down to going against preconceived norms of love and gender, and I think E makes very clear in this video how each of these characters accomplish this.

The way you absolutely called me out for not paying attention to the voice over during the Xingqui/Chongyun gameplay was crazy. Had to do the rewind of shame.

I'm almost more mad at the fact that many people call the content queerbaiting and therefore insult it or outright dismiss it. Like, people who are homophobic being that way is awful but I expect that from them. But so called lgtb+ people or allies ignoring the nuances and context for the company's writing in all of their games (honkai III, genshin, star rail, star rail is especially gay) due to their situation and being obtuse, insulting, aggressive and sometimes even outright sinophobic makes me want to pull my hair out

I was surprised by star rail. I just finished Serval's character quest and she literally says "Anything that was mine was Cocolia's and anything that was Cocolia's was mine." when describing them living together in college. That's not something you do with just a college roommate. The whole quest is Serval getting over her grief at Cocolia's betrayal and death. And comes off as someone breaking away from a bad ex and learning to live as their own person again. It's very clear that Mihoyo has been fighting to sneak stuff past the chinese censors and it's not fair to toss all they do out because it's "not canon". When Mihoyo is trying to say it's canon in every way but spelling it out.

@@dougligaming oh yes star rails queer coding is genshin on steroids. just off the top of my head for playable characters we have serval, yukong, blade, dan heng and of course bronya and seele. bronya and seele is definitely a lot more subtle than it was in honkai impact 3rd/gun girl z but its absolutely there. in hsr seele goes from absolutely hating everything overworld to having complete faith in bronya and vowing to always protect her (see the recent topaz quest). in the museum event, when we ask her to be museum guide for bronya, seele begrudgingly says "fine i dont want to see bronya cry". also theres the museum interview. it just reads as classic enemies to lovers for me **spoilers below for servals and yukongs quest + blade and dan hengs backstories, a little of jinglius quest!!** a little off topic, just to add another layer of tragedy that is serval and cocolia (correct me if im wrong), serval never learns the truth about the stellaron. meaning that to serval, cocolia just had a sudden 180 change in personality for no reason. also theres the fact that serval held on to cocolias guitar for years after their not-breakup and wanted to perform using cocolias guitar at her grave despite them having separated for like years on a bitter note. imo yukong absolutely had a (maybe) one sided crush on caiyi. like, despite caiyi having a whole husband its still stated that yukong and caiyi were the only ones who could match each other in terms of skill and are basically described has having perfect synergy with each other. theres a whole bit about yukong being jealous of caiyis husband because she essentially felt like he was stealing caiyi away from her. also the fact that caiyi names her child on yukongs suggestion and not her husbands (which is why i said maybe one sided but im not too sure). one youtuber i watch, jeikage, dosent talk about queer stuff in general but when he did that part of the quest he was like "oh yukong gay as hell". renheng, aka blade x dan heng is a controversial ship but in terms of canon queercoding (especially for their past lives, yingxing x dan feng) its an absolute doozy. i found a long, long twitter thread explaining the danmei influences of blade and dan hengs relationship + characters but long story short, renheng is one big tribute to danmei as a genre. some other notable points: - blade and dan heng are the only 2 characters to have complementary jade pendants on their outfits, and one of the vidyahara egg dialogues states "you put a jade pendant in your mouth so that you may recognise your lover in your next life". the rest of the egg dialogues suggests that this refers to dan heng. -their outfits have matching bracers as well, which were made by dan feng. the passerby set has a piece called the roaming dragon bracer, which "only a master artisan from the vidyahara dragon race could have made". the item description is about how pairs of objects (aka the bracer) have telepathic connections with each other. -dan hengs weapon was revealed to have been made by yingxing, and pom pom states that dan heng looks at the weapon with longing. - in dan heng IL's story quest 2, theres a bit in the chinese version where dan heng fantasises about yingxing sweating while working. interesting detail there hoyo (not sure why its cut in the EN ver) **leak content ahead, also implied nsfw warning** - (credits to synonyms26 on twitter for this) the most interesting one to me is a in game text, called the wedding wine lyric book. The poem title itself is a reference to the chinese wedding ceremony where the spouses drink wine together by intertwining their arms, just before consumating their marriage. The poem is full of references to traditional chinese poetry and its basically about dan feng fantasising about their wedding night while stuck in prison. as you would expect its not explicitly stated to be about yingxing and dan feng but there are HEAVY hints that its about them. the second aria is called eternal regrets/sorrow of the dragon king, and the poem it references is about the red dragon eating the moon, and how they hunger for more, despite the capital punishment. parallel to dan fengs sin right there. there is also an explicit reference to yinyue, and yinyue jun is imbibitor lunae in chinese. there's a whole lot more but im trying not to make this comment too long, feel free to ask me about any of the pointers above and ill do my best to elaborate/provide sources. TLDR; star rail is an even more queer game and id love to see E do a deep dive on it

​​​@@curryfishheadenjoyerfunny you mention GGZ without having a knowledge of that, Seele and Bronya on Ggz never actually made clear their relationship and Sin Mal and seele would be more accurate to be a couple other than seele and Bronya being a couple, ofc, Bronya got depressed after Seele death but that doesn't mean both were something The phrase "Together in every universe" applies more for KiaMei than BronSeele bc not even on HI3 (despise both sharing a Canon kiss) they ain't even considered that much as couple as Kiana and Mei that already did the deed before.

Honestly I feel a ship that could also argueably just be a regular best friend sort of scenario is Xinyan and Yunjin. There isnt a lot of evidence about the 2's relationship in general considering we have like no events they they both feature in and interact but I truly think that theres potential for something more but there is definitely atleast friendship between the two. Xinyan seems like the more oblivious of the two as she simply treats yunjin well while yunjin states directly she always makes an effort to watch xinyan's shows whenever she can and even personally invites xinyan to join her at the jade chamber to watch the fire works during lantern rite. She takes great interest in xinyan and her hobbies despite their interests being total opposite of each other. But I truly believe that if there truly is something going on that it either hasnt happened yet or they really are just great friends.

loved the video it was great. a few points on eimiko two that add to the ship and miko's personal lore. 1. Miko was raised by her mother and her clan. The Hakushin clan which represents religion in Inazuma which in many ways means they were the most powerful clan in Inazuma. Her mother was the matriarch of the Hakushin clan and Miko was her only daughter (this is why shes Like That). They were granted this position after Kitsune Saiguu forfeited her position as a god during the archon war and aligned herself (and by proxy her clan) with the shogunate. The Hakushin clan fell after the cataclysm. 2. The descriptions of the plants in the forest on Narukami island describe Miko's loneliness and her missing her. It also describes how numb she became after the war and how difficult it was to just keep going. She becomes aimless and extremely depressed. The only person she was close to who survived the cataclysm was Ei and she not only blamed herself for all that was lost but she also locked herself away. She describes the feeling of waiting for her as something that filled her with "incalculable sorrow." 3. Ei and Miko's relationship is described as childish but in a good way. Ei is described as very silly and competitive by her loved ones and that silliness is always on display with Miko. They have a very lighthearted relationship. Pre-cataclysm Ei was known to love sweets and pretend not to get excited when she was offered some. Miko would make Sakura Mochi for her. 4. this is just something i enjoy. Ei is a literature nerd she quotes 12th century monk's in her character story. Miko recommended her a light novel and she spent all night reading it. I think its sweet that Miko knows exactly what books Ei would like. I wish we saw more of Ei's feelings but tbh i think in times of crisis Ei giving her country to Miko tells us everything we need to know about how much she loves and trusts her. Ei barely trusts herself with Inazuma but she doesnt hesitate to put it under Miko's leadership.

My take on Cyno and Tighnari referring to themselves as siblings during Windblume: I also want to point out that they are in an unfamiliar region and city, with unfamiliar people - even just meeting Albedo a day or two ago. Thus, they might not be comfortable enough with those people to basically out themselves. We don't (and probably never will) know how accepting the regions and people of teyvat are about queer people and relationships.

LET THEM KISS DAMN IT Seriously though, people who think that representation in media doesn’t matter are always the people that are so over represented. Not seeing myself in media made me feel alone for years, and so I’m happy that the world is changing that a little by little. I love Genshin made several WLW pairings and people still try to deny them despite the girls have way more interactions with each other than the guys. Like Fischl was straight up confirmed to have a massive crush on Mona in Golden Apple. Lisa and Jean's interactions are always fruity. Beiguang is Beiguang. Whether your Dehyazad or Candehya, Dehya's interactions with both women goes beyond just friends. Eula and Amber might as well be GFs. I dunno, I got more vibes the women were more into each other than not. Especially if you play Lumine, cause some NPCs are down right horrendous for Lumine compared to Aether.

I need more people to talk about the ship Kazuhei/Heikazu. Their dynamic is really interesting and I like how Heizou thinks about Kazuha. Also the fact that Heizou not only has two voice lines about Kazuha but also that Kazuha is the only one he addresses by his first name is quite conspicuous. Kazuhas voice line "Something to Share: Maple Leaves" reminds me heavily of Heizou as well. "...my heart calls for a companion, echoing the deer's cry..." like, hello? First of all, Heizous constellation is a deer and as much as I know "Shika" means deer, so it can be assumed that Kazuha was talking about Heizou...and second of all, in his hangout event Heizou mentioned that he's not always able to solve a case alone and that he needs help too. And who does help him with cases from time to time? Right, Kazuha. We also know that there's a "natural understanding between the two anemo vision holders" as Mark Whitten said in an interview. I also like to think that during the vision hunt decree, Heizou caught Kazuha but let him go again making it seem like he escaped, based on Heizous voice line "About Kaedehara Kazuha: Invitation" but that's probably a bit far-fetched. Anyway, that's a bit of the stuff I've picked up on but that's not everything tbh. I could talk about them for hours but I don't make videos, so yea.

It's sad, but there are people who, even when you show them that two characters have a relationship far beyond the familiar and friendly, until they hear a confession, with all the words, and the character saying on screen "I'm gay" they will make excuses. and they will say that we are just "exaggerating" "turning characters into gays" and that "not everything has to be political." Or my favorite "Not all friends have to become a couple", because that comment only exists when they are people of the same gender, while when it's a man and a woman, as soon as they are in the same room you know that they will make them a couple just because.

I remember that someone pointed out, in an Inazuman novel, that part of the novel indicated the Yae mouth-fed Ei. To explain, we all know that Genshin has some inspiration from Honkai. In one of the Honkai texts that included Yae Sakura, it was implied that she mouth-fed another female character. The Inazuman novel featured the exact same text and the end; however, before it got to the *juicy* part, it ended.

Fun fact: Cyno’s VA (Alejandro Saab) purposely softened his voice when talking about/talking to Tighnari

This should totally become a reoccuring series!! Especially as more and more characters and lore is released, I'm sure there'll be so much more to talk about as the game goes on. (I completely understand if it's too heavy of a workload to keep doing this series though, I can imagine that there is a ton of research involved and I super appreciate all the context and historical details these videos cover!)

Thank you, THANK YOU for this video. I personally feel attached to cynonari since the day I knew about the ship and the characters involved, and seeing that not only shippers, but streamers that are not big fans of shipping stuff recognized that their relationship is more than friends (not speaking about CyYu, btw), says a lot that it wasn't only a ''shippers delusion'' thing. But yeah, people can ship (or not ship) whatever they want, of course, but it's so sad that queer ships has to bring a lot of proof and sources to be validated, meanwhile straight ships throughout the history of fandoms (and also irl) are automatically accepted only because it's ''the norm'' or it's the ''natural thing''. Why they have to be so against when we queer and/or neurodivergent people finally have a media with a lot of queer content that we can enjoy? I understand that many shippers can be very intolerant and toxic when it comes to differences of opinion, but one thing does not eliminate the other.

Honestly. my favorite evidence is the voice lines, and the secret creative scenes of these ships. LIKE, I don't listen to voicelines that often. But after hearing these voicelines, I'm just shock. But it made me jump out of my seat, because on how they coded it. For example, in the video about the book of Yae Masoko, and raiden. NOONE calls their friend "good girl" for any reason. Its a personal thing in couples, a pet name. So like if this doesn't prove that they are queer coded, and lesbians. Then have you saw anybody, called their own bestie, or friend "good boy or girl, or just anything" in a platonic way? I'm sure there are people who do that, but its very RARE. I never saw anyone did that, maybe i will. But once again, its a personal couple thing. Love to dive in more of these queer coded ships.

I mean, "Pretty Please, Kitsune Guuji?" is exactly all about that. I kinda wish it was talked about more in the video. It literally has "Oops, I shouldn't ask about work when you've just returned. Well, as usual, are you going to have dinner first or take a bath first? Or do you prefer...," which is a stock phrase in Japanese pop culture supposedly used by the wife in a newly-wed couple to invite her new husband to bed so in this case "Masako" is the wife and her husband is the Raiden Shogun. (ご飯にする？お風呂にする？それとも私？/ “Would you like dinner? Would you like a bath? Or would you like me?") and its ending "It's just... Why does it feel so sweet at the corner of my lips?" is basically a reference to Yae Sakura's mouth to mouth feeding of medicine to Kallen in GGZ and I guess Theresa in HI3. Outside of that there's also the world quest with Sudabeh, a young girl who dreams of marrying Rana who gets told Ei and Miko's story and is ultimately encouraged by it.

Seeing Xingyun and Eimiko in this one was a treat. 🥰An NPC deep dive would be interesting. Especially if going over Jeht or the 2 NPCs from Yoimiya's original story quest. Also would you be doing any dives in Tartali/Zhongchi? It's the one of the, if not the, most popular ship, but I feel like you have to squint to see the coding. (Which IMO there is, but it's all in marketing or exists outside story elements)

@le1660 Them being one of the biggest ships probably has to do with being the first pair of tall males without the "brother" thing. However, HYV took this an ran with it in their marketing (official art and merch). And even after more tall males were introduced, these two are still paired when merch or some artwork is released. The biggest arguments besides marketing are: The chopsticks Zhongli 'gifted' to Childe in his trailer. The constant implications of them having many meals and drinks together before the AQ aka the Stone Harbor web event. A fatui agent saying Zhongli is Childe's most trusted associate. Zhongli's voice line about having drinks and Childe's voice line still inquiring how Zhongli is and if he's acclimating to mortal life. There's is more, and I recommend researching or reaching out (idk if there's a messaging system on KZread, but if someone finds me on Twt they're welcome to DM me if they want me to rant some more) however I'm not here to convince anyone reading this. Just pointing out why people see coding in their relationship.

My main issue is that any hints were part of 1.0 and 1.2. They haven't interacted or mentioned the other since the end of the Liyue Archon quest. Even tho they have both shown up separately since. As mentioned in the video the coded couples constantly reference the other in events and quests even if the other never shows up. It feels like they got popular because of being the first option around and have been riding on that excuse for 3 years. Like i don't mind the ship. I just don't see anything hinting at it going anywhere after the Archon quest in 1.2. While Xingyun just got more ammo during the poetry event happening right now. If Mihoyo wanted to push more hints they would have. Especially with Childe getting focus again in Fontaine.

These videos are awesome, can't wait for part 3! In terms of suggestions for part 3, I mentioned this in the comments for the first video, but I'd love to see Baizhu discussed, if only briefly. He's not overtly shipped with anyone, but his design and in particular his voice is very queer-coded. What I love about him is how his story intentionally subverts the queercoded=villain trope. A lot of people thought he was going to turn out to be a villain because of his heavy queer-coded voice (among other things, like his pursuit of immortality and snake motif), but in his story quest he is shown to be pure-hearted and quite possibly the most selfless character in the entire game (he's literally planning to make himself suffer for all eternity in order to heal as many people as possible). That's quite a powerful statement to make--in a world where queer people are often seen as evil just for who we are, to have a queer-coded character first appear like a villain, but to turn out to be as furthest thing from that possible. Also, as others have mentioned I'd love to see you cover Jeht. Also, maybe Dehya/Candace/Dunyarzad. And covering Wanderer as a trans allegory would be a good topic as well.

And hoyoverse as a company has a track record of making queer relationships canon. Of course you, as an individual person, can say "I actually see all of them as friends". Good for you! What were are discussing is how Hoyoverse themselves is hinting at these relationships and we are discussing Hoyoverse's actions to always consistently be queer. When it comes to Lyney flirting with the traveller (including Aether, who is a man), to creating all their femboys (despite them being told that femboys were not allowed by the Chinese government themselves), to going out of their way to implement tons of queer subtext about certain relationships. Genshin is INTENSE when it comes to lore, and everything is intentional. There is no way they "accidentally" write a Yae Miko x Raiden fanfic wherein Yae Miko kisses Raiden. So you can have your opinions, but we are not discussing opinions. We are discussing Hoyoverse as a company and Genshin as a game.

Hey E, I'd rlly like for you to talk abt Wanderer/Scaramouche being trans coded! There's so much w his lore, character development, and just general design throughout all versions that code him as being trans Like his resemblances to female trad wear of the royal family of japan, examples: his short version of a hime cut, and his clothing as kabukimono also resembles traditional pirnces clothind and even his clothings as balladeer had elements of it in the design, I'm trying to keep this as short as possible so I'm going to cut it here and all that

Your last video inspired me to analyze Genshin's queer characters for a school project. If you do a third video, I think you should cover some more of the genderqueer characters. Wanderer and Zhongli are specifically two that I think have a lot of interesting stories in thar area.

I hadn't played the game yet, and I thought he was a girl and I was like, "OMG SHE'S SO HOT" and I still didn't know for sure I was attracted to women at the time so I was so confused but just rolling with it. I literally started playing the game because of him. And then I actually played the game, and in that sexy cutscene where you first see him where they show off his tight pants, he spoke and I realized he was a guy. AND THEN I REALIZED I DIDN'T CARE EITHER WAY 😂😂😂 He's still the fictional character I'm the most attracted to LMAO

I mean, homophobic people will always live in denial and keep wearing the blindfold. No matter how much evidence of queer coding is presented to them, they will always deny it, which is why I'm just done trying to explain anything to them. BUT as a queer person I LOVE these deepdives!! I guess a part of it is because it does show there is representation and the game I love so much does accept me and is voluntarily risking their own success to give representation. And I think a part of proving Hoyo's LGBT+ positivity is that their VA's are openly LGBT+(I'm talking about the English VA's since I'm only familiar with them). Wouldn't they try to avoid that if they were against it like the Chinese government? Since in China, being openly LGBT+ can cause you to lose your job. They can't openly talk about it, but they're obviously okay with it and treat LGBT+ people like anyone else.

Keep posting girl, don't mind others. Everyone has their own perspective. Genshin Impact is a game for all and I love it. :)

Wanderer was more just a proof on concept, originally he was just going to be destroyed but was showing emotion and signs of life so Ei spared his life and released him to go live his life. Why it is she made him like that I don't know. Also what is the relationship called between a gender fluid and female person.

No Wanderer isn't really trans. Yae states tha he was not made to look like Ei, and that he was a prototype for Ei to study how puppets work and then she could make her own body using parts of herself. He was made a boy from the start (as we see he looked the same as he does in flashbacks and no lore states he looked different from what he does today besides clothing) and still identifies as a male almost 500 years later. And Miko also used He/Him for him before he was even abandoned, even though Ei didn't meet him after she abandoned him she also uses He/Him for Wanderer. So yes, it would be more of a breaking gender roles than anything else.

I WAS ALSO SO HAPPY TO SEE CYNARI IN THIS ONE i recently finished the archon quest in sumeru and loved their dynamic they are so cute together imo !! also when cyno and tighnari referred to them + collei as siblings i think it was more ab a translation accuracy, i haven’t participated in the event so i can’t really say, but i am taiwanese and so i speak mandarin, usually us chinese/taiwanese people (but i believe in asian culture generally) call older or younger people in our lives “younger/older brother/sister” (sometimes even if they’re the same age as us, it depends on the society status or how much you respect the other person) even though we don’t see them as siblings at all nor are related to them. again i didn’t participate in the event so i’m not sure it was about that. (sorry for any mistakes or for not bring clear, english isn’t my first language lol)

im also asian but not from china or taiwan, and in our country we refer to people (often strangers close/older/younger than us) as "sister" "brother" but it doesnt mean we see them as blood related sibling. (for example i refer to my older sister's bestfriend as "brother + name" when speaking to them and talking about them but they arent necessarily my biological brother) a culture that most western people dont undertand and i kind of get why this misunderstood it becuz they arent familiar or experiencing it first hand. but i also wish they do their own research like E in this video does and not just shoved their own understanding or culture into an obviously different culture.

In the event, part of the conversation comes up while Cyno is talking to Lisa. Lisa comes to the conclusion he should be calling her "Big Sister" because they were both taught under the same teacher and Lisa graduated first. Lisa is messing with him by trying to call him "little brother". Later Collei labels Cyno and Tighnari as her older brothers. At which point Cyno, remembering his conversation with Lisa, tries to say he would be the "older brother" between him and Tighnari. Tighnari then tries to argue that he should be seen as the older brother. Neither say "I see him as my brother". And even if they did. It's clearly in the classroom setting and trying to joke about which of them "deserve" more respect. In Japanese it would be an argument about who should be calling who Senpai. This comes through even in the english version so I don't understand way some western fans insist it means they are brothers. I hope this helps explain what was said in the event! I just wanted to share that the dialogue does agree with you and it is a translation issue. I think if they had picked the less formal "bro" it would have helped english only viewers understand that the brother comment wasn't serious.

i watched part 1 a few days ago and felt so incredibly touched by the way you put everything on the table with zero sort of masks or hesitance that im sure i'd unconsciously put up if i were to be the one talking about all of this, even if im queer myself too. not only do you explain throroughly researched points so well but you do it so freely that its comforting to hear and to agree with. queerness is such an intricate thing to portray individually that i very much understand genshin's way of mainly queercoding through relationships, but you still shed light to many little details that denote the inherent queer identities of many characters ( ningguang kaveh xingqiu miko..) as standalones, if that makes sense. ur just awesome. thank you for all these and i am SEATED for part 3

maybe for the 3rd one expand to queer coded npcs? Like the one girl in Vimira Village that dreams of marrying the cool female forest ranger that watches the kids all the time. Her dream is literally to be the best house wife ever for this other female character. It's a kids crush on a teenager but it still shows a character that is clearly interested in the same sex. I know there are other npcs with queer coding like this one. This was just the first one that came to mind.

But it's still clear that the guys are kissing) This also includs the books of MXTX with heaven Official's blessings, where one of the covers needed to be censored OUTSIDE of China because the two main leads are making out Hell, the "fixed" image of them just loving looking at each other was still TOO GAY internationally. And... her most popular work, Mo Dao Zu Shi, which has FULL on S*x scenes. (Book and comics only. But still) Me: "Are you sure about that?"

Adding to this Mo Dao Zu Shi's live action had A LOT of subtle hints abt lwj and wwx to show that these two men are, indeed, in love without directly saying it to pass censorship. Which I think was cleverly placed throughout the show! It's fun when you get to notice the hints, kind of like a game of spot the difference :))

​@@sevanie1181Yeah. Thanks to Book readers, (I mentioned this in the part one video) I learned how wonderfully sneaky Chinese studios are to share Gay couples in their show. And that was the actual marriage between Lan Zhan and Wei Ying. Aka the scene where... I think it was when they met Lan zhan's mother's ghost? The ritual they did then was actually a marriage ritual of the Lan clan. And since it's a fictional wedding ritual, the CCP wont know it's a scene about two guys getting married, UNLESS they actually read the book.😂 And for it to not be in the Donghua (which they put actual Chinese wedding traditions, but scattered) where they are still very obviously romantic. While it is in the live actions. Which is more censored. I see this as the Chinese giving the CCP a big "FU" in every single version of Mo Dao Zu Shi. 😂

My favorite piece of evidence is the eimiko "Pretty please, Kitsune Guuji?" When someone adds up all the context and throws this steaming, blazing pile of homemade baked potatoes covered in rainbow food dye its hilarious. I wonder how Yae miko would explain this story if Ei were to be given all the context you gave us E. My favorite parts of this video outside of the evidence is the reactions you have to all the queer-coding. The head-scratching left eye wink is my favorite. "Hey bro, do you want yo be my spirtual yang to my yin? Not in like a gay way, or anything, cause you know. We are totally straight." I am super excited for the NPCs! Namely the clearly gay NPC Jeht. Just Jeht. She needs no introduction cause that girl is into girls as much as Jeht is strong.

Love how they said HOYOVERSE is a Chinese company and don't have gays: while in Honkai Impact 3rd (Another game by HOYOVERSE) we have Bronya and Seele (Bronseele, a canon ship of two female characters) kissing both in game and in the manga, Yae Sakura and Kallen Kaslana (Sakukallen, another WLW canon ship) that were canonically in love before they died in the story, along with Kiamei (Kiana Kaslana and Raiden Mei, yet another sapphic canon ship) who are dating.

It's also contradictory for them to say queer coding is impossible because of Chinese regulations. Wouldn't the fact that China restricts queerness in media make queer coding *more* likely to happen since it's a way for them to convey and appeal to a varied audience without incurring the wrath of the CCP? It's pretty dumb to be honest.

It’s so annoying both ways because for those type of people if a girl and a boy so much as look at each other then they’re in an established relationship but if two boys or two girls (or whoever else) kiss then, “Oh, they’re just confused,” or “They’ll break up and get together with someone from the opposite sex,” or, “Why are they shoving this propaganda down my throat,” and yada yada.

best opening of all time, truly oscar worthy. best editing best writing best acting,,, i think the problem with people not understanding that hoyo queer coded the hell out of their games is that east asians' romantic representation and hollywood's are inherently different. hollywood has conditioned western audience to want things to be loud and obvious and in your face. if they don't kiss on screen they're not a couple. but in east asian stories you're often forced to read between the lines because gestures like that are often reserved to be private. kissing just isn't a thing people do in public. hell, i've never even seen my own parents kiss. wanting to say genshin isn't queer coded simply because there is no obvious "canon" same sex pairing is just blatantly untrue, because the way east asian stories are, you're supposed to read into it. the downside and upside of this is that EVERYONE has their own takes, and since the media doesn't obviously say yes or no to those takes, all takes are valid.

Idk if someone has brought this up already but brother is often a poor translation of the Chinese word “gege” that refers to a male figure you love. This can be interpreted as a siblings love or a romantic love as seen in some Chinese novels (mind you the author of 3 of these popular novels almost went to jail for publishing the novels in other places in the world were queerness is more excepted). So hearing people saying that they’re like brothers seemed like that bad “gege” translation to me. The book with the “gege” term in it is called heaven officials blessing I believe. If anyone knows more about this I would be really interested. Thanks

off topic but since you mentioned heavens official blessing, I love how the eng dubbing team for the donghua handled the translation of gege. instead of going for an english equivalent of gege or anything like that they simply make hua cheng call xie lian by name. Like, very intimately. is it necessarily the perfect solution, im not sure honestly but the way its executed i think it was a pretty good compromise. it definitely helps that everytime the va says it you can just hear hua chengs absolute devotion for xie lian. also in general its pretty common to refer to people older than you as gege/jiejie as a form of respect in chinese. it has nothing to do with blood relation and dosent necessarily mean you see the other person as family (unlike english)

@@curryfishheadenjoyer yesss! I think this is why we need to be careful in English translations of Chinese games/shows. Since we (probably) speak English we have to take into account that we are not seeing the intended language and so some translations might not be perfect.
