Well yes, but no. Raiden Mei and Kiana are legit lesbian couple, same case with Bronya and Seele, but like Kaveh and Al-Haitam? What? No, they're hating each other and wanting to go separate way if Kaveh has the means necessary, while Ningguang and Beidou is just close friend and business partner in professional setting. Why can't we accept some characters are having blandish relationships that're not going personal? Like sure, Furina and Neuvi looks good on each other, but they're more workable as alike platonic friend and work partners. Lyney and MC can be said bisexual relationship, but he's more indicative of trusting us more than romantically liking us, but Jeht (NPC) is legit canon to liking FMC, and then Acheron and Black Swan isn't looking promising to work out yet as far as stories being told. To be honest, even MHY are playing safe not just in the regard of the queer relationship, but even straight relationship are all prone to cause chaos & infighting within community that would wreck their reputation, as we know both Kiana and Bronya can have such treatment because they're golden child of MHY, don't forget about wedded relationship of Kallen and Yae Sakura as legit canon.

@@VAMiyoyu Yes, but borrowed from HI3 since they're Golden Child of MHY, except like Aventurine is gay as original development, but he's that kind of gay that like to fling around and always like to tease and seduce, I guess he's hypersexual as indicated by his flamboyant outlook. That ship with him and Dr. Ratio is unsatiable in my personal opinion, they have no depth to like each other than for casual fun for one and work partner by another between each other, however Dr. Ratio is all-time serious guy, kind of forcing up with both of them having to be together. I wish Acheron finds her very own Kiana in HSR, but for me now Black Swan isn't her Kiana in any capacity, not much common ground being found in their dynamic. Yeah, it's hard to establish a canon ship, worse still if they're gay while being playable side characters, they prefer to cater fanservice relationship with us the MC than establishing separated romantic world between characters beyond our sight as player, to give its world some liveliness. My best bet that would develop as romantic queer will be once again, Bronya and Seele in HSR.

Nah, they’re never gonna do that. Part of the thing is that they need to keep all the playable characters “available” for the Traveler, since this kind of game it’s expected that you can think of yourself as the Traveler.

@@KayKayBayForever see this would make sense in the beginning of the game but it has since become clear that traveler is another character and not a stand in for the player. both aether and lumine have VERY distinct personalities and the entire story relies on them being actual characters. does that stop people from projecting onto them? no. also worth mentioning that hoyo has had canonical queer couples in their games before censors got to them - kiamei and bronseele being the most famous examples. in fact, bronseele actually *kissed* in the hi3 comic (which then had to be removed from the chinese version but it's still in the global one yay). so hoyo isn't scared of making the characters "unavailable" to the player. in both genshin and hsr there is actually only a handful who show any romantic interest in the traveler or trailblazer (the ones mentioned by E in the video while hsr has firefly for example). the rest exist completely on their own, often having deeper relationships with each other than with the MC.

@@juliap5907 You're correct in saying that the traveler is a character of their own, especially after the recent dain quest. However, it's also undeniable that they're also self-inserts; The former and the latter aren't necessarily exclusive. I think the reason why people think they're exclusive its because they take the term "self-insert" too literal. Like its 1:1 copy of them. The Wikipedia definition highly differs from how the community uses the term, but in any case, a self-insert can be any character that is bland enough and generic looking so that any person can self-insert with them. The most common way to do this? Silent Protagonist, and so happens that the Traveler is also one. Sorry for the yap, but if anyone wants a good example and easy to understand, I always lead them to "The Jim Button" from Stanley Parable.

The funny thing is with stardew, Krobus has become a very loved ace sexual icon of sorts. Cause he’s just a nice roommate that you can hug and stuff. No romance just vibes. Also the Roman’s/Greeks would “allegedly” fight harder when their husbands were there and many couples were poly due to many marriages being arranged and stuff. So not uncommon for there to be consensual non-monogamous relationships.

Honestly, one of my issues with baldur‘s gate 3 and the queer representation in it is how racism is still treated as a fact of life but queerness is just a non-issue. Like, every other character comments on me playing a drow but if I enter a bisexual polyamorous relationship with Halsin and Shadowheart they are just like „You love who you love“.

@xalzaixhungers2442 oh, that's because the drow are mostly really evil because of an evil god, and seeing a drow means you likely will be tortured or enslaved or murdered, by a person who has live for centuries. and there is a certain roleplay value of proving them wrong now this doesn't mean all drow are evil, it's just means they have an evil culture while the tieflings have more of a distrusted race, due to their bloodline ties to devil's, even though it dosent effect their morality at all. and dragonborn are more looked at as weird, due to showing up to the world recently, and are big scaly dragon people. though kobolds are not playable in baldur‘s gate 3, they would be fitted in the look down upon, are often see as nuisances/pests and gnomes REALLY racist to them. .

Clearly, Larian decided their D&D world was inclusive. Personally I like that, we don't need to add every bad thing from the real world into made up escapism fantasy worlds. It can be nice to have lgbt people just be normal. And besides, there's nothing in the D&D guidebooks about prejudice around gender, and sexuality afaik. And in fact, the latest(iirc?) version of the guidebooks, 5e is pretty inclusive in it's wording around it.

I mean, I get your point but it's not *real* racism. If it were to be racist among humans that'd be an instant red flag, but pointy-pink-ears being mean to pointy-purple-ears doesn't affect real people since elves don't exist. BUuuut I've heard that they are adjusting it in 5.5e of dnd, at least for Tieflings! Still, in the game the relationship between different ancestries is portrayed as in cannon 5e dnd, which to me honestly makes the queer representation pop up more, the message for me being: "Why would they even bother having issues with queer people, they are not that stupid, not even NPCs with -5 INT".

I no longer play overwatch but i still fondly of its cast for how varied and diverse they are in terms of nationalities, races and now queerness too. I remember when Tracer was the only queer in this game and now there's like... 5 or 6?? It's not much but it is an improvement.

fun fact about programming: checking if [can date and other.gender is not equal to self.gender, then date] requires more work than [if can date then date]. that is to say, we arent hiding 'the gay button', the game has no concept of sexuality unless you create those restrictions onpurpose. ergo, we as coders, aren't consciously choosing to hide the gay. it just so happens that a pansexual system is just simpler and thus more likely to be made. its not that we are adding a gay button, its that we aren't taking away the gay button. the gay button was always there.

idk what to write in my comment but please do make another video like this with indie titles i would love to find more queer games to buy that would allow me to enjoy my right to be capitalised on too as a member of the queer minority

To Gay, or not to Gay, huh... YES! GAY!

Dragon age also deserves credit for just how early they started doing representation. Dragon age origins was released in 2009, and Dragon Age:Inquisition (which is incredibly, blatantly queer) was released in 2014--one year before the supreme court legalized same sex marriage in the US. Also, Dragon age:inquisition featured a prominent trans male NPC who is portrayed in a very respectful way: and again, this was back in 2014! Also, the part about characters getting together if you don't romance them--that happens in Inquisition, too. If you don't romance Sera, she gets together with Dagna. If you don't romance Dorian or Iron bull, and you put them in your party together, Iron bull starts flirting with Dorian until Dorian finally takes him up on the offer and the two get together.

The issue of the gay button isn't about whether it feels good or not, it's just a matter representation and whether or not a piece of media has actually gay characters. If a game exclusively has "opt-in" queerness, that dilutes the representation of queerness because anything queer isn't an a part of the experience the player engages with as part of the intended experience. There's no other form of media that really does this other than games, because they dont really have the means to. More importantly, this isn't really a realistic portrayal of queerness. I get that players may like the gay button because it means that everyone wants to fuck them, and that's a nice fantasy to be able to engage in. However, not all real queer people completely conceal their queerness until asked (or asked to fuck). Some people do because they like the privilege that comes with being straight/cis passing in certain contexts, but many make it a forward facing part of their identity. Like if a trans person is publicly just going through second puberty, onlookers don't exactly opt into that. That's just part of their lives now. People who wish they could opt out of knowing that this person exists and is trans are usually just transphobic

allow me to go on a bit of a rant here but, Persona 4's relationship with queerness is especially interesting to me SPOILERS BTW two characters, Kanji and Naoto, are VERY queercoded yet both their queerness gets kind of erased? Kanji's shadow (his true self) is the stereotypical gay man, hitting on Yosuke and Yuu, and just being very flamboyant. A lot of his palace (the reflection of his mind) is centered around how he might be gay bc he developed a crush on Naoto. (I will say he has a preference for men bc he would get bullied by women a lot for his hobbies (typically feminine ones), and bc of that hes a bit sexist) After the fight, Kanji accepts his shadow as a part of him and that's supposed to be that right? WRONG For some reason, this story about Kanji accepting the fact that he likes men turns it around and focuses more on the hating women part. He will continue to insist that he doesnt like men and this fact is further helped by his guy crush, Naoto, getting exposed for actually being a girl. What Naoto's gender is is a big talking point in the persona fandom, but what no one can deny is how transcoded she is. When we first meet her shadow, they are talking about a sex change surgery. Naotos big emotional moment with her shadow is about how she wants to be a man (and an adult) so badly. She hates being a woman because of how sexist the police department she works at is, but that still doesnt deny the very obvious transcoding going on with her. After she accepts her shadow, Naoto uses she/her pronouns for the rest of the game and continues to be a woman. Both of these characters are the main two characters whose insecurities/focus of their palace get made fun of the most too. Yosuke will constantly say homophobic remarks towards Kanji and Naoto has a running gag of "while she pretended to be a man, she had the biggest chest out of all the girls!!" HAHAHA SO FUNNY GUYS Yosuke also is a whole bag of internalized homophobia within himself (he literally had a cut romance-able social link) but THIS IS ALREADY TOO LONG 💀💀. i tried my best to get my points across, sorry if i didnt do a good job !!

the shadow isn't the true self, its just a repressed part of a character, and for the most part they are all parts of themselves the characters are better off overcoming. while kanji probably isn't a 1 on the kinsey scale, many of the things people point to could very well just be part of the sexism themes the story tackles at that point and i don't think he was ever any kind of romance option. imo that means most of those characteristics are more meaningful as a part of yosuke's story, rather than being an indication of what kanji has going on. they'd give the story and yosuke a chance to expose and confront his internalized homophobia and insecurities before/alongside the option for the main character to get into a relationship with him. god i wish they didn't take out yosuke's romance, so much of his character looks worse without it, and its not like it'd even be the first homosexual relationship in the series! as for naoto, she was always just meant to talk about the sexism in japanese society, but it is nice that other people can find something to relate to in her character.

So real, I once watched every genshin gay video until 5 in the morning starting from 1 or 12

I appreciate the queer representation in Overwatch but at times it feels sooo performative, mostly because of how their fanbase acts IN GAME. It doesn't feel like they're concerned with protecting their queer fanbase within the game at all. And for a mainstream series Persona had a cut gay romance in Persona 4 and has an optional gay romance in Persona 2. Fair warning like any Hoyo title approach Persona with caution especially Persona 4!

You mention how, in Origins, Zevran is quite open about his bisexuality, but the other bisexual companion (Leliana) takes it one step further in that you actually meet her ex-girlfriend and talk to her and about their relationship so you have evidence in front of your face that she smooches girls beyond dialogue mentioning it. In 2 while most of the companions are bisexual (and some argue that they suffer from the Gay Button because of that [Looking at you, Anders, who only talks about his ex-boyfriend WHO YOU LITERALLY JUST MET as his boyfriend if you play as a dude, and also how in his first appearance in Origins as DLC he only ever flirts with women]) the only companion who is 100% straight is also a DLC companion, so you have to pay more to get someone who won't be gay. You pointed out how in the upcoming Veilguard game if you don't romance a companion they might initiate romances with other people and that already happened in Inquisition! If you don't romance either Dorian (gay) or Iron Bull (pan) they could end up in a relationship together and if you don't romance Sera (gay) she will end up with the NPC Dagna (sexuality unclear, but def not straight). Also in Origins if you play as a human noble you can initiate gay sex with an NPC before your first combat encounter.

one of my comfort games is slime rancher, i've loved it since it first came out and i still do to this day! it follows the main character beatrix leubeau and her journey throughout the far far range. she has a love interest back on earth called casey, and their gender is never specified, which for a game from 2016 is pretty dang good! edit: i forgot, but there's also an NPC character named mochi miles and she is HEAVILY implied to (at least, from my perspective) have a crush on beatrix.

You should look up Fear Effect and Fear Effect 2. The first game is awesome for Chinese expats' children who were never taught their cultural and mythological heritage (like me) and the main female character Hana is roped into a shady cyberpunk contract because of her girlfriend needing medicine that only the megacorp owns. The second instalment isn't as well written, but you get to play as Hana and her girlfriend Rain kicking ass alongside the other playable characters from the first game, Royce and Jakob. This is PS1 era.

Some rep that avoids thr gay button that I didn't see coming but was very pleased with was Loid and Albrecht in Warframe. Just watch a video if you wanna look into it though, it would take literal days to get to that point on a new account.

Both surprised and not surprised to not see a mention of the fire emblem series in this. Their relationships do have a lot of issues though so I can see why it wasn’t added, but I do recommend looking into the history of the series. It’s an interesting topic for me at least 😅

Okay love the video one game that i think you should talk about is boyfriend dungeon. You can play as a she/her, they/them, or he/him (literally they ask for the pronouns i thought that was cool and you can change them at any time) and there are a variety of weapons (they are people as well) to woo as you fight through dungeons. There are men, women, and enbies. If you do another video talking about queer games i think it would be cool if you talked about that one. Just a suggestion of course but seeing this video pop up reminded me and was hoping you talked about it but since i dont see it much in general (compared to some of the others you talked about at least) i knew there was a possibility that it wouldn't. Amazing video and cant wait for you yo talk about more queer games

As for ME -- there is one bi character in ME2 and actual gay characters show as late as in final ME3 (I simply ignore the existence of Androfailure). Liara is specific, because, as you mentioned, she is a member of mono-gendered species, which looks like human female (but, as some in-game lines suggest, they are in fact super-powerful psionic beings who look attractive to any species because of... peculiarities of their reproductive rituals). So, while inter-species romance is a staple of ME series, gay romance is actually only in a final instalment. And because aliens can be very alien in the game, but the romanceable ones are, unsurprisingly, binary-gendered, you can only romance an alien of opposite gender, or Asari (who are mono-gendered).

I'd love a indie focused video on this! Do you want recommendations? If yeah, I'd recommend Oathbreaker by LarkyLabs, the first and second one, it's a dark fantasy visual novel with romance, plenty of the charactars are queer and there is even an asexual romance option (which I love, but sadly don't see often)

a game with a bit of queer representation is Fire Emblem Fates and I know it's not a lot, but there is one male character you can romance even as the male MC, which is Nile. It's indeed a "gay button" type of situation, you will not notice it if you do not look up for it, but I dunno, I just remember that when I was younger that was incredible to me to have that option
