A Look At Catasetums

As the title says, this is a look at Catasetums. Because this is done in early December, we are looking at them as they are heading into dormancy. This is also the blooming period for some of them. I forgot to mention during the video but the flowers in many of these are very fragrant.

    I love Catasetums, one of my favourite genera. I only have two, one "complex" and very confused hybrid, that just is growing a new bulb since December and has begun a flower spike, and a Wine Delight that finally goes into dormancy. They are weird beggars. Your plants are beautifully grown, and the Fdk. made my jaw drop. Absolute stunner!

    Courier6 just remember that because sometimes even simple hybrids are "confused" we have to induce dormancy rather than follow what the plant is doing. Best of luck. Experience and observation pays.

    I have a Cstm. Fdk After Dark that doesnt know its winter. It hasn't spiked nor dropped its leaves. Nights are very cool in the 40-50s, sometime high 30s. All my orchids are now in my attic in front of some large south facing windows, so the days are in the 60-70s. This time last year the same bulbs were in full dormancy after leaf drop. Brittany at Holy City Orchids has many good videos on Ctsm culture. When in dormancy, I remove from the pot, discard the sphag moss and cut back the roots. I basically treat it like a tulip bulb until spring growth appears with new roots.

    I would say that it is time to stop watering and encourage dormancy. I will probably be cutting the leaves off mine after flowering is over for the two that I have shown. I don't know why yours didn't bloom but lack of flowering is usually caused by insufficient light.

    Hello wade...i do have a question about catasetum...i have the cyc wine delight, but encounter rotting on the base of the plant thats why i decided to cut it out...the cane now is sitting on a wet sphag moss..is there a possibility that new growth will emerge on the node?or i just throw it away..?hope that you notice my message...thanks and more power...

    Well done with that Fredclarkeara, Wade! 53 blooms!! It's impressive! Thanks for this video, it was interesting and informative. I live in Finland and I only have one catasetum type orchid, a Cycnodes Wine Delight I bought this summer. I have never seen the blooms live and I'm curious to see of I will like the fragrance. It's growing a spike right now. My cross is actually a primary hybrid between a cycnoches and a mormodes, so I believe it makes perfect flowers, with both male and female parts. So the amount of light it receives won't have any influence on the sex of the flowers. Did I get that right? I read somewhere that mormodes don't need lower light to make male flowers, and the same happens to their crosses, and fredclarkearas too have mormodes in their ancestry and that would explain it. Let me know if I'm wrong! :) I have given plenty of light to my Cycnodes Wine Delight because I wanted it to grow well, and I don't think it can produce female flowers, just perfect flowers. :) I thought I would ask you because you know a lot more than I do. I love watching videos of SVO catasetum crosses. They are all so beautiful.

    Don't water it. I have a couple like that also. Some hold onto their leaves well into dormancy. Try to place it someplace cool. You could cut the leaves off if you want to but I haven't had the heart to do that to mine... yet. :) If you don't notice any change in a couple weeks let me know.

    Hi Wade, thank you for all the information in your catesetum videos! I do have a question, I only have 2 catesetums and both have their new growth started, and I believe the one will be ready for repotting very soon. Do I just cut all the old roots off? This is my first time going through this dormancy period with catesetums. Thanks again!

  • @wadesorchids7219

    @wadesorchids7219

    At first I went by the thought that the old roots died when the plants went dormant but i have found that this is not the case - at least some are still alive. At this point I am not cutting off the roots but rather just moving up to the next size pot if necessary. If the sphagnum moss is breaking down then you need to disturb the old roots and might decide to just cut them because as we know, sphagnum is a royal pain to remove from roots. These are pretty new for all of us and there is very little that is "tried and true" but experience will teach us and the hybrids that are coming out are just amazing!!! One note. I have found that it's not good to overpot these even though they love moisture during the most active growth. Best of luck and let me know if I can be of help.

    Hi Wade, nice video, beautiful blooms! I'm new to catasetum. Got my first last October. A beautiful black magic witchcraft from Haussermann, in bud. Sadly I did not heed the part about spider mites soon enough and I managed to over fertilize it and ended up with deformed buds. At this point it has spotty yellowing leaves on the new bulb which is as big as last years. If this was your plant how would you proceed?

  • @wadesorchids7219

    I think it's best to try to keep the plant as healthy as possible. If the new leaves fall off treat it as a dormant plant (meaning no water). These guys can come back from incredible problems. Best of luck with it.

    I know some who trim the dead roots and old potting mix when they go dormant. I usually wait until there is new root growth in the spring. That usually involves leaving some of the old roots but that doesn't create any problems.

    I'm looking for a wonderfully fragrant Cycnoches or Catasetum. Do you have any of the former? I read that warscweczii and chlorochilon both smell like banana Popsicles, but my fragrant orchdis book says one (can't remember which off hand...I think warsceweczii,..)smells like jasmine. Do you know or have a recommendation? My birthday is coming up and I'm trying to decide on an orchid for my birthday.

  • @wadesorchids7219

    @wadesorchids7219

    I think it's important to stop watering. If you can tell that the water is still being used by the plant cut it in half this week, then half again next week. If you don't see signs of dormancy in two-three weeks you may need to cut the leaves off. I know this seems drastic but this is the way some of them are. Some plants need to be induced to go dormant and part of this could be the temperatures. If you have an air conditioned house bring it inside. You want to get it as cool as possible - at least below 60F if possible. Don't put it in the fridge. That's a bit too cold.

    Our job is to give the plant what it needs. If we do that it will bloom when it's ready. After 40 years with orchids you'd think I had known that like the back of my hand but it took many years. Good luck with it!

    Hi Sherry! Yes. No more water! If the pots have moisture in them you might want to unpot them so they will dry before they rot the bulb. I'm betting the roots are not taking water up anymore and therefore the potting media will not dry and can easily rot the bulb.

    Just saw this, Sherry. Like Amanda said, this is about Catasetums which are very different than Dendrobiums. Some Dendrobiums do need a rest in the winter and it's important to know how much of a rest because they do differ, but nothing like the Catasetums.
