    my only other lil tip would be that you should probably try to do past papers as early in the day as possible because they require a lot of brainpower. if you do a past paper at 10pm you probably won't perform as well as you would at 4pm and then you might feel discouraged. i found especially that the later i studied the more prone i was to silly mistakes haha

    how was your first day?? i did use anki for definitions for physics and further maths, although my set up wasn't very advanced. the only distinguishing feature for me was that i could access my flashcards from the school computers online. i've seen videos online of people doing some mad things with it though! also, i aimed to go to sleep at 8:30 to wake up at 4 (with a 20min nap during my school lunchtime if need be). i think that waking up at 4am is such an underrated way of studying because it's much easier to get in the zone as there aren't any distractions. it's just conquering that initial feeling of death when you wake up that's tricky. once you get used to it though your brain will know that e.g. 4-7am is the time for intense focus and i found that i went through work sooo quickly during those hours that it massively outweighed the cost of being tired. i'd say if you want to try waking up early then i would see it through for 10 days or so because you're going to really be miserable for the first half a week, which isn't really a good reflection of how you'll be when your body clock adjusts :p

    @@Y12126 hopefully year 13 will get better for you - it's a scary year, but at the same time you'll develop so much as a person through it and what comes after is even better :) my revision schedule was predetermined because i did activities after school. normally i did independent study 4-8am, then a mix of school and study between 9-4 then i had some kind of activity like sport or music after school which filled up my day nicely. during weekends i did the same (obviously with independent study instead of school) and most weeks i went out on a saturday night then woke up later on a sunday morning to give me a break in routine. i found it best to study in 2hour blocks then take a 10minute break so that my brain could get really in the zone. honestly i think that if you're aiming for top grades, the only way that you can guarantee yourself the best results is to literally go through all of your lesson powerpoints and make sure that you know everything on there (i liked to go through the ppt again, the use a whiteboard to list every concept learnt in the lesson, then go back through and fill in any gaps in my knowledge). even though it's time consuming it's the only way to outplay the 'luck' involved in what topics come up in the final exam. if that's too time consuming, i think it's better to be very confident on 60% of the topics, rather than cover 100% of the topics, but not really know any of them very well. also this sounds silly but i found that 'romanticising' my day made it so much easier to get through all of the boring revision and daily tasks. things like having a nice playlist for my morning walks, making matcha, lighting candles in the evening, wearing nice clothes all helped me to get through it. realistically, studying isn't much fun (i love maths but most of the time the stuff i was doing bored me to death) so adopting the attitude of 'this isn't going to be fun, but i'll do what i can to make it bearable' is probably the best way forward lol

    would you have any tips for subjects that require a lot of memorisation of terms + essays like biology? x

  • @yanr4n

    @yanr4n

    8 ай бұрын

    i hated biology lol but for memorisation i would probably recommend - when you're going through content (e.g. definitions or bullet points from essays), try to write them down pen on paper rather than reading through them/saying them out loud/typing them up - try to spread out content points over time (anki is a really good tool for this as it tells you which definitions to do when). you might do 30 definitions today, then revisit them again in 2 weeks, then 2 months. that way you're committing stuff to long term memory. cramming can be really hard for subjects with a lot of content so you need at least a good portion of content held in your longer term memory, especially the slightly easier stuff - try to chunk up your content and switch up what you're doing frequently. don't revise definitions for 2 hours straight, instead do them for 30mins for 4 nights over a weekly period. this stops you from going into standby mode and makes sure that you're actively trying to study the whole time - definitely prioritse! i know that grade boundaries for bio tend to be lower than subjects like maths, which indicates that you should know less. there might be a point where you have to accept that there's subtopics that you simply can't grasp and that's ok - exams are made to allow for this - for the essays, there's definitely some good to be said about literally just regurgitating them. even better if you can shorten them down into bullet points and make logical connections between the points - that way in an exam hopefully one point is enough to prompt your brain to remember the rest. not sure there are any shortcuts for remembering the bullet points though - you'll probably have to just remember them like you would a set of definitions - my fav technique for memorisation is definitely blurting!! there's so many videos on it as it's become really popular but it something that definitely worked for me :)

For Computer Science, I would really recommend Craig'n'Dave's 'Smart Revise'. It does have a small cost, but personally I think it's worth it! Also, there's the OCR A-Level Computer Science textbook with questions and I had a workbook which I've forgotten the name of, but I'll check on Friday when I go home!! I’m taking Math, Business, IT and critical thinking for A-Levels, I’m considering adding FM but just for AS, would you say it’s a waste of time to do that? I want to do actuarial science in uni btw and it’s heavily math oriented

  • @yanr4n

    @yanr4n

    8 ай бұрын

    I don't know what the workload is like for the subjects other than maths, but it sounds like you're already doing a lot so I wouldn't over-complicate things if you don't need FM for your degree. That being said, you might want to try it for a couple of weeks in case you end up liking it more than one of your other subjects. Even though it would be something to write about in an application to Uni/CV I'm not sure the time it would require would outweigh the benefits of having the qualification. FM is quite abstract, so other than the further statistics module it probably wouldn't correlate hugely to actuarial sciences. I'm not an actuarial scientist though so my advice is based off vibes only 😖

    alongside a-levels i did a couple of things (up till a few months before my exams): part time work, taekwondo, piano, organ, and mandarin lessons. biggest thing for me was to have a regimented schedule - i had one of the above activities every night from around 18.30-20.30. i tried to keep school work from 04.30-17.30 (obviously i ate and got ready and stuff during that time), so it was slightly easier to balance because my activities had a set time i knew that i had to complete my work before dinner. obviously it's not always possible to arrange clubs in this way but the closest you can get to that arrangement is prob best. unless you really enjoy an eca, i don't think that doing more than one (or two) will have any major effect if you're thinking about post-18 education. in terms of academic weaponship, probably better to focus your time on revision if you're left with deciding between the two.

    definitely time block! i would normally block out everything in my day tbh even like eating and showering and stuff but that's because i'm slightly obsessive. i'd say on the days you want to be mega productive time block it all out so that you know that you're making the most of your day (my tip would be to be slightly generous when doing that though because often you'll fall behind just because you have to do things you forgot about. if i was doing a past paper that was 2hrs long i would time block out 2hr15min.). if you're not so bothered about going 100% but still want to get stuff done, a specific to-do list with no time blocking is far better than nothing :D

    My favourite way to manage time was timetabling in my planner then setting alarms to keep me on track. I liked to do all of my subjects every day to keep my brain on them (and to stop myself getting bored of one subject). Most of my time was occupied by Physics and Compsci because I found that they required a lot of revision. My A-Level Compsci papers were 2.5hrs long each, so I did 2.5hrs for the paper plus 45mins for marking :)

  • @yanr4n

    @yanr4n

    8 ай бұрын

    i'm planning on making some subject-specific videos in the next couple of weeks (haven't given it much thought yet lol), but for coursework specifically here's a few for now :) 1. you get marks for adaptation/ fixing errors so if your code goes wrong then make sure to put that in your document!! not trivial syntax stuff like forgetting a colon, but logical errors etc. even better if you can explain exactly what lead to the error to prove your understanding 2. assign some stakeholders (people who represent your target audience) and reference them throughout the program. interview them at the start on similar programs to gauge what program features should be prioritised. use them as feedback throughout your development process and have them as a first line of final testing. this is a really nice theme to use throughout your program and also a great way to show your adaptability 3. explain what your code is aiming to do during development. for each logical point in your code, you should be explaining in your coursework what it's doing (or should be doing if there's an error). you can either comment each line in the actual program or label it on the document 4. don't skip out on the final evaluation of your code. really scrutinise it - look at it's usability, maintainability etc in detail (i'm talking paragraphs on each design feature unfortunately). it's easy to skim over this part as it's the last bit but it's the "easiest" so don't be tempted to be lazy near the finish line 5. don't worry about your actual code. there are only a few things you should seek to include. for example using functions, iteration, different data structures, ordering or searching algorithms and other programming techniques taught in the course are a good checklist of techniques, because clearly you're supposed to know them. otherwise, keep it simple. i just did a simulator to model projectile motion in different environments (rather than a mega complex game) and i came out with an A* in the coursework section individually. might as well save your time if you can :p

    haha we've all been there. I'd say that there's a nice medium to be found between studying hard, but not so hard that you're wasting your time by being too tired. Maybe alternate between doing a past paper and doing a past paper length more chill study slot (i.e. do a past paper then 2 hours of blurting) with some breaks between? If you do too many your brain will tire and then you'll score worse, which might make you feel even nore stress 😖😖

    @yanr4n

    8 ай бұрын

    physics is a really tough subject!! i'll make some subject specific advice videos as soon as i'm done with my nsaa, but for now i would say 1. make sure that you are aware of all of the formulas that aren't on the formula sheet, which formulas you need to be able to derive and what each formula means. you can at least be confident that you've bagged some marks if you can use all of the formulas as then the only skill you need is using your calculator 2. if you're finding a concept hard definitely ask a teacher/look on youtube for an explanation on why that concept is true. when i was revising i frequently couldn't hack the textbook at all, but having it explained to me a different way online made it seem so obvious that i instantly remembered it. a lot of physics can actually be remembered if you just know how to think about it logically (electricity and kinematics are great examples of this) 3. Do all the past paper questions you can find as in Physics, exam boards seem to be happy to reuse past questions and change them only slightly. For each topic there will be 'standard' questions that you see crop up all the time, which again is nice as it adds a bit of familiarity in a subject that seems to cover way too much content

    Hey I do further maths and physics too and my exams are in about a month. I’m really worried about not getting my A*s in those two subjects because of the really difficult one or two questions that tend to surprise people every year. Do you have any advice apart from past paper questions to get my problem solving skills up to scratch so that I can get those top marks?

  • @yanr4n

    @yanr4n

    2 ай бұрын

    The best place I would think to get some trickier questions for those would be entrance exam papers. You could try NSAA, ENGAA, PAT, MAT, STEP etc. Those papers tend to be a test of problem solving skills/ manipulating your knowledge in a way you haven't seen before (particularly the non-multiple choice ones are similar to 5-7 mark questions). Even though right before the exams I thought I knew all the content, in both my FM and Physics exams there were the most horrendous questions and I had absolutely no clue what to do, so I spent some time making sure I hadn't lost any silly marks through the paper then just worked out as many equations as I could on the right topic/waffled about the semi right thing as a desperate attempt for some partial marks lol

    Thank you!! I tended to do the textbook questions while learning each chapter, then on PMT I would use the 'past paper questions by topic' to revise at the end of the chapter. At my school we had tests at the end of each chapter anyway, so there was motivation to do that haha. When I had completed all the topics for one full AS/A-Level paper, then I started doing the past papers. I probably did one of each paper I could do per week until 2/3 months before my A-levels, when I started to crank them out as much as possible :)

    9 ай бұрын

    i honestly took my gcses so long ago i can't remember most of it 😅 i think i have a couple of things - make sure you learn all the equations for the sciences (especially physics) because it's such an easy way to get marks and lots of them don't appear on the formula sheets - for english lit, make mind maps on essay themes for each book/play you do. e.g. i did a christmas carol so i did a mindmap of all the prominent characters (scrooge, tiny tim, the ghosts...) and all the prominent themes (charity, disability...) with quotes for each one. also a good way to see which quotes are the most versatile - for english lang, the only way you can get better is practice. there's hundreds of unofficial exam questions online - if you're getting behind, focus on getting good grades in maths, english, science before your options. honestly nobody cares if you fail/do significantly worse in one of your options unless you're planning on continuing to a-level - may be a good idea to invest in/make some flashcards for each subject to remind yourself during more relaxed revision periods as you're covering a lot of content over a lot of subjects - don't worry about the close exams! they seem like a lot over a short period but the adrenaline will get you through most of the tips in the vid apply to any exams too. best of luck 🤍🤍

    5 months is still quite a while you're gonna be fine!! I know people who started their revision a couple of weeks before and came out with good grades. I started doing past papers the moment I had covered all the content for that paper, so once you're in that position I don't see any reason to wait? If there are quite a few topics you're not there yet with I would always go for general cover (if you try to master them one by one you may not finish in time and then your least strong topic may come up). You could go through the spec for those topics and highlight the points you don't feel strong on, then watch a youtube video lesson on it, take some notes and try some of the topic questions in your textbook. After that I would go and try some exam style questions on the topic and piece them together until you're up to a full paper :)

    Any tips for coding??

  • @yanr4n

    @yanr4n

    8 ай бұрын

    When I was coding the number one thing I had to overcome was the fact that the learning curve is very steep (i.e. it takes a lot of time to get a little bit better at it). For me I found coding really frustrating to begin with because I was so used to being able to get homework and projects done quickly in other subjects, then I had to spend hours debugging code when I felt like I should be getting it right much faster. Once I accepted that I was going to need to commit a lot of time to trial and error in order to progress, I found coding much more enjoyable as I was no longer focused on trying to get it done as quickly as possible. Also, if you have time I think that breaking down your solution into chunks and then learning the code chunk by chunk via KZread is a great way to progress because there are SO many great resources online for anything you need to know. Stack overflow works great for time pressured work though too haha

    I'm making a video on some specific Maths/Further Maths tips coming soon! I would say the best thing to do for Maths is practice practice practice just like you said. There actually isn't that much content for Maths compared to other subjects, and if you're already doing well I assume you have the content under control. The things that are tricky about the A* level questions are that they require you to apply your Maths knowledge in ways that aren't immediately obvious and the best way to get better about spotting these patterns is to run through as many questions as you can! I didn't do Biology A-Level, but some of my friends did very well in it and I think their revision techniques were a mixture of doing lots of past paper questions and using flashcards to keep on top of their content knowledge throughout the year. 6 months is definitely enough btw! You can absolutely do it :)
