A Japanese child play "Darumasan-ga-koronda"
We volunteers are conducting activities to introduce Japanese game in English to children who are studying English in Ratanakiri, northeastern Cambodia(at Ezra Vogel Special School and Rainbow Kawasaki School). As many inhabitants there rely on cash income from agriculture, Learning English is an important skill for getting a favorable job (they also learn computers in class). I want to create opportunities to have fun interacting with English.
The first movie is "Daruma-san-ga-koronda". There seems to be similar game in every country in the world !
カンボジア北東部・ラタナキリで英語の勉強をしている、Ezra Vogel Special School と Rainbow Kawasaki School の子どもたちに、英語で日本の遊びを紹介する活動を、有志で行っています。住民の多くが農業による現金収入に頼っているなか、英語の習得は、好待遇の職を得るための重要なスキルです（彼らは授業でコンピュータも学んでいます）。楽しく英語と触れ合う機会を作っていきたいです。
第一弾は「だるまさんが転んだ」。世界各国にも、似た遊びがあるようです。

I used to play this in Girl Scouts! It was one of my favourite games, though my scout troop just called it Daruma Doll Fall Down.

This makes me think of Takeshi-jyou/Takeshi's Castle, and Jyagaimo-san ga Koronda/The Potato Fell Down.
This is the best game rather than games of other country and I love Japan. ❤

when you tell the oni how many steps to take how is the number of steps determined and if those steps should be big or small?

Another one close it to we is called what time is mr wolf. The wolf would 1 to 12 o'clock and how many step a person can take. But if say lunch time everyone must run and not get caught. But must make it back start are you become the next wolf

Are there limits on how many steps the player asks the oni to take? I’ve read of a version where they must make no more than 3 steps, too.

There is no upper or lower limit. As an advantage given to the person who successfully touch Oni, he can asks for any number of steps without being touched himself, against Oni.

Players side wins. Then, they choose a new oni from them by lots so that play the game again!
