I'm playing extra slow (on my first playthrough) so that ima beat the game right around when dlc comes put 😂

Brilliant connections and observations. I'm instantly sold. I think it actually makes a lot of the discontinuity make sense. If the rune of death is the forbidden shadow of the erdtree and it was plucked from the golden order and thereby the elden ring and thereby the lands between, the lands of shadow being veiled away from Marika's land's between, quarantined from the shadow of death!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It MAKES SO MUCH SENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ommggggg

Great stuff Goldmask! I'm actually working on a video right now that also references the Qliphoth and it's connections to the tree in the Land of Shadow. There's definitely some big inspiration there. Also Gangsta's Paradise cracked me up

Thank you so much! And that's awesome that you're also exploring the Qlippoth! Since Kabbalah is already in the base game (I did a whole video on the connection there with the Crystalians!), I'm really excited to see where FromSoft will take us (both literally and figuratively). I mean, the Land of Shadow already sounds like it could be a parallel to the Sitra Achra...If you haven't already, I'd highly recommend checking out the channel Esoterica, who has done a ton of wonderful videos on the occult but from a wry, academic perspective. Oh and congrats on your video taking off!!

🤓 Erm, actually, the Erdtree and the Golden Order are not synonymous. The Erdtree would likely still exist were the Golden Order replaced, which is the case in several of the endings. It would be more accurate to say the Erdtree is synonymous with the Elden Ring. The Golden Order refers to, essentially, a system of beliefs and concepts pertaining to the laws that govern reality (or the adherents of those beliefs) set in place by Queen Marika when she removed the Rune of Death from the Elden Ring.

Hey I'm pretty sure you can see the tree in shadow of the erdtree from outside the shaded castle. If you go out to the ledge where you fight the golem and look out to the left of the windmill village, you can see the tree. I wanted to look at the big rock with a whirlpool that's on the map but I saw the tree instead lol. I think the fact the castle is shaded is connected to the whole shade vibe from the dlc.

I think what we will come to find out is that Marika has two dualities: Female/Marika + Male/Radagon *and* Light/Marika + Dark/Gloam Eyed Queen. Anima/animus and Ego/id. The shadow self is that what we can’t accept of ourselves. Usually repressed, denied, and in Marika’s case - removed and sealed away, hidden under a veil. But - it can never be fully escaped. Melina got Marika’s Gold eye, Marika’s GEQ shadow self’s Gloam eye and her father’s fire. It’s why she can use Erdtree Spells, can also burn it, and after the ‘forbidden shadow’ is freed - her Gloam eye is finally unsealed. Her hair is also Rose-gold: a mix of red and gloam with a touch of gold. I think Marika burned Melina at birth after seeing her Gloam eye and Red hair propensity for fire (Blackflame and Fire, enemies both), hence why she doesn’t understand what Mothers do. The Land of Shadows and the Death Tree are the parts of Marika that she cannot accept, and disrupts the cycle of life itself - containing it to her Erd Tree. All of her children who are ‘naught’ and not suited for Gold are pruned away and abandoned where they are cast into the Abyss below the Land of Shadow (more cut content) where they will be fully excluded from the cycle of life/death itself simply because they do not suit her purposes. This is Marika’s sin - and the discarded children are reminders she tried to forget. The monstrous creature we saw I think will turn out to be the culmination of Marika’s shadow self, all parts of it. We will fight this ‘Shadow Marika’ just as we fought Radagon I think.

You could have easily just said "the term your looking for is tetrarchy, which means one of four joint rulers" that way if they didn't know what that meant, now they do. A teaching moment. I definitely think it makes a lot of sense if the Shadow of the Erdtree turns out to represent the Shadow side of Marika's self, particularly if it's filled with elements that have been removed from her Golden Order. (We already have the superego/animus with Radagon and I think her Omen twins would represent the id (especially Mohg)). And I really hope we get more lore about the Gloam-Eyed Queen! That's a really interesting idea for Melina though I'm working on a video that involves her prior burning and goes against a lot of the conventional wisdom.

Maybe farum azula was sent to the sky for more than one reason. The death tree began to take root, thats why we see it settling in and bringing corpses back to life in the crumbling temple. AND MAYBE, the worm faces are originally from the shadowlands and are possibly envoys or mediums between both lands of the dead and living.

I reckon the Shadow tree is what is being hidden by the Golden tree, following the imagery of veils obscuring in the DLC. I think the Shadow tree is representing a physical form of the Erdtree, (one from the age of Plenty, before it swiftly came to a close?) being strangled by a power other than Marika's (Destined Death or Deathblight... but I suspect something unmentioned altogether) where the golden tree is a phantom or illusion, or "object of faith" that hides the decaying tree with its golden facade. What is being hidden must be Death, in some form. Either from the Gloam Eyed Queen, or some other form? We have seen a lot of Crucible imagery from the dlc, and the Godskins are likened to the Crucible.

I think this is a really interesting theory but I personally think this tree is most likely the erdtree in it's true primordial form, the crucible era great tree if you will. Whether it's connected to destined death or not I don't know yet, but I think it is very likely it could be given the imagery of Marika reaching into the uh- god skin looking fleshy birthing canal in the trailer. I think this is just the great tree (erdtree) as it existed before Marika brought about her golden order but who knows.

Thank you! The video came out before the trailer, but I do wonder if the Erdtree and the death tree split off from the earlier Crucible-era Greattree when the Rune of Death was plucked from the Golden Order. Hopefully we'll find out in a few weeks!

Imagine if in the DLC Godwyn and Destined Death didn't have any importance, it would be lame wouldn't it?

The tree of death and tree of life are both parts of the same natural cycle. So when Marika in her hubris and grief messed with it, in the short term it created glory and everlasting life. But in the long term as souls were no longer being recycled, it would clog up the natural cycle and just create more and more problems and ruination. This is ofc purely speculative but it would be a cool twist imo if the Erdtree and the Shadow tree is the same tree. In the upper world the tree sticking out of the ground is the tree of life. In the underworld where gravity is reversed, the tree of death sticking out is the same tree in the opposite end. So the Erdtree is both the tree of life and the tree of death. Interconnected with the same stem going through the ground from the upper to the lower world.

Oh yeah, that bug was definitely patched! Though my personal headcanon is that in 1.00, NPC ghosts have the power of levitation 😅

Interesting ideas on the Tree of Death. Consider that Maliketh is named for Malkuth; "Some occultists have also likened Malkuth to a cosmic filter, as it lies above the world of the qlippoth, or the Tree of Death. (From Wikipedia)"
