    19:25 This same thing happens to me. My dad passed away two days ago; he had a stroke, lung cancer among other serious things and basically died slowly during almost three weeks. During that time it was agonizing to see him like this, even tho we weren`t the closest in the last years (he wasn`t such a great person but one can`t help but love their parents regardless even so). And meanwhile one of my biggest distractions has been basically revisting my love for Silent Hill by consuming a lot content; video essays, listening to the soundtracks, etc. SH2 in particular has always been my favourite with the third game. But it truly hits close now in a way it has never done before. It`s really sad how a terminal illness changes so many things, and how you can`t stand seeing someone suffering so much from it to the point death becomes a better option. The game truly did a great job showing the range of emotions and negativity this kind of scenarios bring in, while is also great for dealing with the healing and moving on concept. SH has been for years a franchise that has brought me an odd comfort, and during these harsh weeks it has been a literal shelter for my mind, while also helping me deal with negative emotions. Just wanted to share that, in a way, I relate and understand. It`s nice to see it`s not just me and there are other adults as well that find similar feelings of emotional connection to something such as SH games.

    That "Cleaning Silent Hill?" comment about an hour 24 minutes in makes me want a Power Wash Simulator Silent Hill crossover, not just because it would be satisfying, but also because it would be the first indie game to get both Silent Hill and Spongebob SquarePants DLC and something about that idea really amuses me.

    When James says “I don’t know what you’re planning, but there’s always another way.”, the tone Angela uses when she replies, “Really?” is so telling. It’s the tone of someone who’s heard those words enough times before that now they’re more exhausting than comforting. Which, to be fair, James is kind of just giving her the bare minimum to walk away feeling like a good person. Just empty platitudes that anyone can say because they’re not equipped to actually help a depressed/suicidal person, and deep down they might honestly be relieved that they can’t be expected to. It ties in very well with Angela’s complete dressing down of James on the burning staircase, and James’ own complicated feelings around being unable to do anything to save Mary or help her cope with her terminal illness. That’s Angela’s lesson for James. You’re not the hero, and you can’t save everyone. You can pretend if it makes you feel better, but it probably won’t in the long term.

    Thank you for sharing your experiences about the terminal illness aspect of this. SH2 means so much to me for similar reasons - my mom had a terminal liver-lung condition for basically my whole life. In Water wrecked me. I'm really wanting to write something about it and how it deals with terminal illness and I've been wandering how many others the game touched.

    Didn't expect to hear talk of Blue Velvet, or David Lynch while watching this. Personally I feel Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me is even darker in some respects than Blue Velvet. I also never drew that conclusion about the pyramid head scene with James in the closet being a possible homage / reference to Blue Velvet!

    It makes sense to me they used Aztec mythology, given it's been discussed Clive Barker's Hellraiser was inspiration for the other world segments. A lot of the lore in Hellraiser from movies, books, & comics is based in Aztec lore. The Hell Priest (Pinhead) male version on the comics is even Xipe Totec, the flayed god. It's easy to see how each inspiration of the dev team lead them into rabbit holes, I love seeing it ❤

    There's a shot leading up to the 46 minute mark, where James and Maria are talking. The both of them are crushed down into the bottom right corner, and most of the rest of the frame is just fog and the lake. Almost 3/4 of it. Given the fog as something that occludes the truth -- as our representation of confusion and denial -- it's a great indicator of James' disassociation and ignorance at that point. In addition to just kinda looking cool.

    James Sunderland is one of the favorites in this story disturbing fact Mary's body is in the car trunk and somehow for whatever reason James thinks Mary is alive waiting for him the person Angela was abused by her own father really bad person next little girl named Lora steps on his hand hinting about Mary then keeps running off in that crappy apartment is some guy we know well Eddie Dumbrowski killed a dog such an asshole he wounded the owner watch out for him and finally there is Maria her voice she could be the twin sister of the wife James knew in life an now for monsters bobble heads female nurses you don't ever want a check up from acid spitters useless ceiling grate walkers whatever the hell those things are in that hospital and of course Red Pyramid Head monster . Silent Hill use to go by a different name once the original title got lost in the veils of time also was a peaceful and friendly welcoming place then when cults settled in that is when it changed badly so now this haunted place is like a dream nightmare you can't ever wake up from . " we become like them we'll be alive but like a nightmare you drink the bloid you not wake up from nightmare . " 🤠 I would pet those cats they are cute my sister has two cats herself . In this theory of mine Maria is a twin that Mary never talked about another one is old spirits have been testing James to see if he is worthy of getting what he wants the most could be a dog has planned revenge on Eddie .

    I think you're missing the point, both Mary and James are victims.... As someone who has dealt with loss just like James it baffles me how you can hate him. There is no way of coping with what he went through. James did the merciful thing since it's better to witness someone rotting away. Anyway I love your content very informative!

  • @thegamingmuse

    @thegamingmuse

    But that's the point! It's mercy TO YOU. Because you no longer have to suffer watching them. But for the dying, their last moments are no longer peaceful goodbyes and holding hands, but suffocation at the hands of a loved one. Would you want your final moments to be your beloved killing you? That's terrifying. I can't imagine wanting to kill my dad and have that be our final goodbye. THAT'S why I hate the dude. It sucks, but the most human to develop is the strength to stay with the ill and watch them go, and not succumb to the desire to escape.

  • @orioneden7529

    It's not only me watching them suffer. I try to put myself in their shoes and to be honest I cannot imagine the agonizing pain a terminally ill person is suffering from. In my case, my mother not only suffered from the symptoms of brain cancer but also from the chemotherapy and radiation treatment. I saw her gradually become someone else and do not wish this upon anyone. If someone reaches a point in which not even morphine or any pain relieving drug can help them then I think it's better to show mercy to them. Mary was given three years to live, I cannot imagine how painful it must've been for her having to endure the physical and also psychological pain the disease was causing her. She thought she was a burden to James and to be honest I think there could've been a more humane way of euthanasia James could've used. However, James was broken as a person, I'm assuming his train of thought wasn't optimal and he just wanted the pain for both of them to end, Mary was never going to recover. Speaking from experience the worst scenario of having a loved one becoming terminally ill is not knowing if they're going to pass, but when. My condolences go to you by the way because of what happened to your father. Each person has a different way of looking at things and I respect your point of view

    the thing about angela and Eddie not appearing at the hospital, I think it's because the hospital represents the will to be healed. to get fixed, to be helped and to go on. Angela and Eddie aren't looking for that. Eddie believes he's right and that the answer for his problems is violence. He simply don't believe he's the one who needs fixing. Angela doesn't want to get healed nor want to go on with her life. Laura doesn't need "a hospital", but she's looking for someone that was ill. James on the other hand, is on a journey to fix his life. at first he wants to meet his dead wife so he could be happy again. he (believes he) is in silent hill to fix the hole in his life, to heal his wound. he doesn't know he actually needed a different kind of help and the true reason he was there for, but differently from the others, he is actively trying to get things right.
