A Home-made Octopus/Spider base For Ham Radio

Like the MFJ Octopus and the Chameleon Spider, this base is used to support up to 4 pairs of band matched Hamstick/Firestick/BuddiStick-like elements in a dipole arrangement. This video shows an interior view of the almost completed mounting base. Not mentioned in the video is that the holes for the grounded side elements are 3/8", the holes for the center lead elements are 1/2" to acommodate the nylon washers with the insulating lips.

Just ran across this video and the following one regarding building an octopus. I've built a number of dipole mounts for my hamsticks (I have pairs of all Shark Mini's except the 80M are full size and a 60M pair are MFJ). I use my hamstick dipoles for almost all my portable adventures and have been very pleased with the results. I've looked around trying to find a reasonably priced octopus/spider mount or even one of the Chameleon Che Quads but no luck. Your videos are just what I was looking for. I ordered the parts to build a quad mount since I would probably only use two bands on most portable outings. Thanks for the great videos! Jack K5FIT

I watched the follow-up video first. Absolutely brilliant. I'm doing the exact same thing, using the Milsup poles. I have a 40m hamstick dipole and was looking for a multiband solution. Not sure what I am going to run but looking at the Shark Sets on GigaParts and Amazon. I went with 7/16 for the larger holes. no slippage with the shoulder washers, they fit snug. Many thanks for the wiring design, I will follow it and not jury rig it.

This is great! I'd love to see a follow up video with more detail on the finer points. Including how you insulated the antennas from the box. Keep up the good work! BTW... I enjoy your surplus vids as well.

This is an octagonal box with cover made by Hammond. I got it from Digikey. This was also mentioned in the video.

Works great, but had to offset 40 meters to get good SWR since the mast is only 18 feet. Had some RF issues in the van, but a 240 43 mix on the coax and some snap ons on control cables fixed that. Used it on field day and got almost 100 contacts. Also had good dx on 10 and 20 meters out to Europe and Spain.

Thanks, I haven't been getting to any gun shows due to covid, and the way the laws and AFT regs are changing I've decided to go a little Grey and reduce my firearm footprint on social media. I am planning a Tulsa trip soon however, and maybe I'll find something I can talk about there. Fingers crossed!
