Ham Radio Antenna - Junk Box Ham Stick Mount for Portable/POTA

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I made a homebrew Ham Radio antenna mount for my ham sticks that I could use in the field or with POTA. It was a bit more work than it should have been but I think the concept is good.

Time happens! Seems that most (particularly younger) hams forget that for years this homebrewing of antennas was an integral part of the hobby. Don't see that as much as years ago. Well done!

For POTA I mount hamsticks on a mag mount located on the center of my car roof. For portable, I mount them on a 6 foot camera tripod with 4 radials. Both work great and much easier than deploying my linked dipole. 73 Marc, W4MPS

I built one of these a few years ago. I did not add and remove the ground radials. I put on for 80n 60m and 40m radials and 20m. I also made a bar for the 4 hamsticks. The are always on it with a 3/8 24 tpi bolt. I used it when I went to West Virginia atop East River mountain. I had very good results with just 100 watts. Good Video... de W4DRA

WB4BKO For tuning the 80 meter Hamstick, it is often necessary to trim off a few inches of the stinger. This prevents the stinger from affecting the resonance in the lower section coil. Very well thought out video and you have some really great ideas. I will be incorporating them in my next antenna project. 73

Nice work! What I like to do is get the antenna and radio setup in the back yard before it gets dark. Then I build a campfire to stay warm when I listen to the radio. Oh and don’t forget the marshmallows. 👍❤️📻

Thanks for sharing. During the Black Friday sales I was looking at the Chameleon Quad dipole setup for using hamsticks because they were 10% off. I thought of you and how you make your antennas and decided to try my hand at making or buying a box to attach the matching hamsticks to and just make it a single band for now, go for quad later. $140 is a bit too much I feel for a box with a SO239 connector and a couple of 3/8"-24 adapters.

Nice video. Thank you. I use ham sticks on my mobile rig and have also used them portable for Field Day. Question on your radials… Do you keep them elevated, off the ground, all the way from the antenna to the end of the radial? Or… Do the radials droop, and run along the ground, after they get a few feet away from the antenna? I would think that tuning would probably be very different between the two options above and I am curious which method you used. I have watch your (excellent 😊) video twice and can’t quite tell. Thank you Bill - W7JZE

Just for fun, why don't you attach another piece of flat metal across the mount using a 3/8 x 24 bolt with 3 holes, one in the middle and 2 more on each edge, using 3/8 by 24 threaded nuts on the whips, then put your 2 ham sticks for 2 bands and try that, with of course some radials for the bands you are trying? I think you will find the 2 bands or 2 ham sticks become like a fan antenna with both working with one coax? Some minor tuning may need doing, but this way you have BOTH bands? If you have 3 ham sticks for 3 bands then do that knowing a mount to do this for 3 whips does exist, but it slightly bends on the edges so the whips will separate away from each other? Then your antenna becomes a tri-bander? www.gigaparts.com/vp-1.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAoab_BRCxARIsANMx4S5z6cgH-aioWo9pjibun5n7Ds2yBvHIQY7lQtHgOPcICQbRN8hAaNsaAjQBEALw_wcB
