Say you’ve got £10,000 weighing down your wallet and you’re looking to trade it for a watch. If you’re lucky, you could grab Rolex’s latest, greatest ceramic Daytona, but what about this instead: a mechanical perpetual calendar chronograph and change.

Years ago when I was a younger man, I was in a bookstore in Portland, OR reading the latest edition of a wristwatch magazine. The IWC DaVinci was on the cover. There was an older man standing next to me, reading the same magazine. I commented on how spectacular the IWC DaVinci was...he chuckled, said 'I agree' and lifted his shirt sleeve to show me the very same IWC DaVinci he was wearing. We shared a really cool watch moment over a really cool watch. It was a good day :)

As a watch nerd this is one of the most important watches in the industry, helping to revive mechanical watches after quartz dominance. Also one of the first watches with a ceramic case(not this model). Definitely owning a piece of horological history

@@afarhan21 no, if you open it up u will see a valjoux 7750, so ur not really missing out. non of the perpetual calendar module will be seen, as the case with all perpetuals, you will only see the base movement unless u completely disassemble the watch.
Wow! Absolutely gorgeous and a timepiece I wish I could buy. But on top of the high price, so many complications means that if something goes wrong, then it will be as complicated to fix too. Great video.
This is an absolute beaut of a watch! The last perpetual calendar I heard of for under 10k EUR was the Meisterstuck Heritage Perpetual Calendar, which I like; but I'm loving this heaps more! It is gorgeous! One day... one...day!
The best part of ur videos is the way u share the knowledge with us🙂
Anyone moaning about the lack of a caseback, google the calibre movement used for this reference... (cal. 790) it is NOT a looker.
I could listen to talking hand guy for hours, reminds me of the weather forecast on the radio. Very soothing. On another note, could you do a episode on the instant change minute counter? I’m fascinated by it and its rarity. Also (I know I’m pushing it now) but could you get your hands on a gyrotourbillon movement? Pretty please;)
The biggest problem with high complications is service and how to maintain it .. may be you will pay less than a dytona but the service will kill you but as a mechanical engineering it's sensational for the price

Someone mentioned this IWC only has a Valjoux 7750 with a perpetual calendar module, so it shouldn't be that expensive to service. However, sourcing parts for the perpetual calendar module will potentially be very difficult once this watch is no longer in production.
This watch in this video is NOT a Grand Complication. The IWC Grand Complication is reference # 377017 and that watch has a minute repeater. The watch in this video is a Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph

what camera are you shooting?
I really love the combination of the stepped case and interesting lugs.
Looks rather a lot like my non perpetual Epos with an ETA, (VJ 7752) movement, that's about where the similarity ends! Gorgeous watch, exactly the style I like! I was at an antique fair yesterday and saw a beautiful Jaeger le Coutre Gold Perpetual with moonphase. I didn't dare ask the price!
Love the dial and case of this watch. Hate the lug configuration. :(
such a passion u got !!
A little late to the party on this particular subject - but I see that Frederique Constant has deep discounts (~$3800 with tax) for their perpetual calendar, depending on retailer. Something to consider for me, as I never thought I would actually be considering that particular complication for that price!
Just checked IWC but I could not find any IWC Perpetual Calendar Watches at the price you suggested. Is this a second hand watch?
Yep, saw one of these at a local preowned watch shop in my city (Seoul) today. Barely 10,000 bucks.
Your storytelling and level of delivery is almost as refined as the watches you present.. more more more
Another wonderful video!
Can u review the SEIKO SNA411 flight alarm chronograph.....the “Flight Master”
I'd be interested in seeing more Sinn watches. They are certainly substance over style, but still have style. And some of their high end divers and pilots watches seem relatively affordable and fantastically built.
Beautiful!
The IWC Da Vinci is a gorgeous grande complication watch. The perpetual calendar is the most useful complication in a mechanical watch. I will rather have the IWC Da Vinci then the Rolex Daytona chronograph.

Anybody here have an opinion on solvil et titus? I have an automatic mechanical watch by them with 3 subdials: month, moon phase, and I think a world timer on the third one. And it has a date window. Any idea of what its worth/ if its worth keeping
Beautiful watch😍
Amazing value, but the cost cutting is evident on the finish of that second hand and the hands of the subdials. No exhibition caseback on such a complicated watch is another telltale sign of probably cost cutting in the movement finishing.
What about the rattrapante or the tourbillon variant?
I like it. it just masterpiece
You should do a video about the Nomos Zürich Weltzeit Worldtimer
This is the one KZread channel that I subscribe to - it combines the wit of Top Gear and the seriousness of the BBC Radio 4 Shipping Forecast. Were the presenter ever to be revealed, a certain ex-presenter of Top Gear would be sent packing from his new role and everybody's mind would turn to watches. The tone is clear, the wit is often found only on the second listening, but ultimately there has never been as much as a disfluency, unless deliberately, in all the episodes I have watched. The research is so in depth, that a second viewing is about as revealing as the first!
In addition to the 2100 manual year change, there is a 2200 year marking. After the 2200 century the century disc, or rather partial disc, will have to be completely replaced.

I can't believe I'm salivating at the sight of an ancient watch. I'm more of a modern tech guy, but now I understand why these watches are so coveted everywhere. The engineering, the planning, the history, the complications! Smart watches are nothing compared to this. I'm just waiting for watch with a small screen in one corner of the face that displays app notifications from my phone. Extra points if they allow me to play and pause music from the watch buttons itself. I just want an excuse to sue my watch more, rather than fumble with my phone.
