    An often over looked method to keeping track of HP is just to use a dice that represents the character.

    Whoa that was phenomenal!! If I'd known how simple the combat was in these RPGs I would have tried it a lot sooner. Having said that I'm looking into a set of Basic Fantasy books for myself or I'm asking for them for the holidays this year. Cheap and fairly easy to get into they actually encourage you not to buy the books but for convenience sake I'm looking into them. Truth be told I thought about getting into D&D two years ago and kind of put it away because I couldn't quite grasp the combat mechanics. I was intimidated and overwhelmed by the rules heavy 5e system and began checking out simpler alternatives across-the-board. I've created minis, dungeon tiles, and a few other gameplay implements but have never used them before. I also somehow managed to pick up about seven sets of dice that have never seen a tabletop. I'm ready to quit being a poser and start playing like a pro.

    The books are so affordable and well written. I highly recommend them to new players and old players alike, they're wonderful. I'll also say that the idea of being a pro is very intimidating haha. I certainly don't think of myself as a pro, just a goblin who hates elves. I hope that once you find yourself some people to play with, you too will learn the joy of hating elves.

    I’m totally new to RPG so forgive the question. At 4:03 I notice you have hp (I presume hit points aka hit dice) 4? In the book goblins are HD 1 right? I take it this is your personal choice for goblins?

  • @ErictheGoblin

    @ErictheGoblin

    11 ай бұрын

    So Hit Dice are 8 sided dice. If a monster has 1 Hit Dice, that means that it could have anywhere between 1 and 8 hit points. The dungeon master roll the appropriate number of 8 sided dice equal to the Hit Dice (HD) of the creature. So in this instance of the video, these goblins have 4 Hit Points, which is about average for a 1 Hit Dice creature.

    @@ErictheGoblin ok so it would be cool if you could do a vid summarising the whole monster stats section on page 62 of 4th Ed and explain differences between hit dice (and what they are), Armour class and what it’s used for, attacks etc. I feel the book has me constantly flipping back and forth when all i’d like to know is what each stat means in each combat scenario.

    I know this is an old vid of yours, but thank you for posting it. My family randomly decided to make a DND game night every Saturday (with 4 kids, we have an entire party ready to go 😂). The trouble is, I was elected DM… and I have only played a few times about 20 years ago, and everyone else has never has. I have bought ALLLLL the books, and a campaign (Curse of Strahd). I then realized that was a ton of information, so I decided to start with the Basic Fantasy RPG. I printed out the entire guide and Beginner’s Essentials (don’t be like me, it’s way cheaper to buy the book than to buy new printer ink!), and it is simpler, in terms of moving parts… but I still don’t know the most important part: dice. I have the gist of how to use the tables, I could damn sure craft an adventure, but… I cannot figure out how/when to use the dice! For both myself, and the players. I cannot find any tutorial giving examples of when to roll and what dice to roll… until this one. At least I know how to roll for an attack encounter now, thanks to you! But… what about everything else!? Do you have anywhere online toward which you could point a newbie who has no groups around? I have been studying this game for days and days, and do not feel remotely ready- and the family is getting impatient to start 😢

    You know what? I sympathize so much with you. I would like to make a video tutorial describing all the times that I'd roll dice, that way you can start to feel your way about. I'll work on that soon :)

    @@ErictheGoblin that would be absolutely amazing. There is definitely a need for it, and I’m shocked no one has done that! Even the “beginner” videos throw around terms that I, basically a true beginner, do not know, and they give zero live-action examples (and I find that kinda ironic, considering that they are explaining a tabletop RPG… but I digress). This video was honestly the first one that made me truly understand the attack encounter mechanics, I appreciate it (and your humor) SO much! If you do make another vid explaining the dice/rolls, get ready for an onslaught of new subs 😅 I am fairly certain by the other comments on the other “beginner” videos, that I am not alone in my vexation 😬

    This is how simple old-school TSR D&D was to DM/play. Its a shame WOTC completely changed D&D ( 3e, 4e, 5e, are D&D in name only)and turned it into an overly complex, rules heavy, number crunching nightmare.

    These early styled games have an emphasis on avoiding combat as it can be really dangerous to low level characters. That should be your last resort. So if you can figure out how to bypass dangerous areas or use your equipment and talents in ways that help you avoid monsters, you'll find yourself succeeding in your adventures more often!

    I normally don't have a problem with swearing. I do it a lot myself. I just feel that when doing a video to help teach others how to do something, it should probably be toned down as much as possible. Not trying to tell you what to do on your channel though. Just offering some advice from a viewer's perspective. :) Also, poor Lance. He's just trying his best. lol
