A Gigantic Jigsaw Puzzle: The Epicurean Inscription of Diogenes of Oinoanda
The Ancient City of Oinoanda, close to Fethiye, hosts presumably the largest philosophical inscription of the ancient world. The inscription, which has an estimated length of 65 to 80 meters, had been constructed by Diogenes of Oinoanda so as to convey Epicurean philosophy to the next generations and visitors of the city. The research which was restarted in 1968 after the discovery in the 19th century is being continued by an international team that makes use of newest technologies. Moving from the history of research full of surprises and difficulties, the film elaborates on the Epicurean approaches to concepts such as pleasure, happiness, friendship, dreams, and gods. Contributions from the local people and the members of surface survey team take place along with the views of experts including the senior researcher Martin Ferguson Smith.

Devasa Yapboz: Oinoandalı Diogenes’in Epikurosçu Yazıtı

Great documentary on a great philosopher... Simple life, controlled desires and cultivated friendships; a timeless recipe for a good life.

What an unusual film! The lack of a coherent narrative or of an interviewer to ask intelligent questions on the one hand is a little frustrating for the curious, but on the other it contributes to a dream-like sense of touching dimly on an ancient cultural past which remains mostly hidden. I would love to hear more from Martin Smith, a very interesting man who hints at an Epicurean lifestyle himself.. and also from Diogenes - strange not to hear more of his words since that was the whole point of all the expeditions and research. Also baffling that these priceless artefacts are abandoned to the weather and the goats instead of being reassembled into a wall and covered over!!

A fascinating film, beautifully shot, colored, scored, and edited. Well done. Too bad the audio for Martin Smith's interviews are so over modulated. If you ever need a location sound mixer for any future projects, I'm available!

Wiyanawanda / Winuwanda / Oinoanda Luvian orgin city actually... Also, the Greek name comes from the Latin people. Anatolia is a civilized region with its origins from the Scythian, Luwian, Hatti, Phrygian, Lidyan and Lycian peoples. The Hellenes are mostly an invading and plundering tribe.
