A gadget maker’s worst nightmare...

Ғылым және технология

Creating a physical product is difficult, even without the added risk of someone stealing your idea. In this first episode of In the Making, Ashley Carman chats with creators about how they dealt with people ripping off their ideas and manufacturing knock-offs. We unpack the challenges they face and how they overcome them.

    This vid made me look into buying a Lumio. It costs $200. At that price you are just asking for knockoffs. If the original is sold a at reasonable price, most people will pay a bit more for authenticity. But when the "good enough" knockoff costs 1/5 of the orig. price, and it's on Amazon...you already know the outcome.

    I think the price is part of the response to the knock offs. He can't compete with someone who spent nothing on development, and litigation against every infringement would wipe him out. With that in mind, moving into the premium market, a small space that he could defend with his resources and make a decent return on low volumes, seems like a good compromise to me. He could have priced these at cost and still lost the price war.

    I was part of a fast growing luxury eyewear company and we had the same issues when looking at China. We sent over a few team members to work with the factories on specifics of our manufacturing process that was not done in our vertical. Oddly enough as soon as we started a "small" batch for a few of our SKUs a couple months later we saw cheaper knockoff popping up all over the internet built with a half-a$$ version of our process. I always tell people who are thinking about going to China, or any outsourcing for that fact, to expect that your IP is gone the second you share outside of US protection. At times it's worth it, other times it's not.

    Lumio is clearly much brighter, uses more precise sensors to activate, uses powerful magnets to increase functionality, has a 12 hour battery life (even with the much brighter light), and uses real wood/quality materials. There's definitely a mark up to cost $200, but there's also no way it only cost $15 to make and get to market.

  • @addledhead

    @addledhead

    5 жыл бұрын

    Not to mention the $200 price tag of Lumio is probably because the knockoffs forced him to focus on the upper class wealthy art design community, so in all likelyhood Lumio would be cheaper if people couldn't just rip off the design and undercut the market with lower quality fakes.

    @@addledhead Lumio first batch was 85 early bid in kickstarter , 125 launch price, 165 for a while. I bet the original and the knockoff are both made in china. I'm a creative person, and would like to think that a product I create would be protected if I brought it to market. On the other hand, I think that some ideas are so simple and are so derivative of other ideas, that they should not be protected. The button thing is a headphone pause/play button without headphones, and very similar devices are used as shutter remotes on cameras. The book lamp is basically a book with an LED glued to it. Anybody could make either of them in their own home in 10 minutes after watching just this video. In cases like these, the real problem is that a patent was granted. Having said that, there are some really novel and complex designs and products that are ripped off, and I would like to hear more about how those fight the copycats.

    I think, another ways to combat knockoff are 1. Have the product ready to release when you announce them. I have bought kickstarter items 3 years ago which I still haven't received, of course I'm gonna buy something else. 2. Be priced to compete with the knockoff. If your product sells for $50 and there's another product out there that does the same thing that sells for $20, even if it's not as good quality or have some features missing, people would tend to buy that other product instead.

    Awesome episode of In The Making-- one of my favorite Verge videos yet. I've got 2 Lumios and I absolutely LOVE them. However, Lumio's company support leaves something to be desired. I had an issue with my first that was still in warranty, but the company didn't respond to my warrranty query until the product's warranty had expired. They then instructed me to send my old Lumio to their China office for a 50% off code on a new Lumio. The shipping to China would have cost me just as much as a new Lumio! Still, I bought a second Lumio when the time came because it's such a unique and charming product. I even bought a knock-off (and then returned) from Amazon to compare it to the original Lumio and it doesn't even compare.

    It always comes down to the consumers, if they're being cheap, they'll go for the knockoffs, but if they're really interested in the product, they'll always return to the product associated with the brand, Lumio for example.
