A fountain of creativity for Americans in Rome

Sitting atop a hill overlooking Italy's capital, the American Academy plays host to a range of artists, composers, writers and scholars who gather in this distinctly Italian setting aimed at stimulating creativity and collaboration. Correspondent Seth Doane explores the history of the Academy and finds out how Rome is inspiring the mostly American fellows to foster new work and ideas.

It's inspiring to know that there are such places for artists to explore and create by being inspired by Rome. It's also wonderful that CBS Sunday Morning is able to bring us these kinds of stories, reminding us that not all journalism has to mark politics, the latest crimes and culture war battles.

This segment made me cry! To think - a space to create myriad kinds of beauty, of words and music, art and film, visions; without worry of how to feed the body or rest your head! Ethereal and energizing, both. And surrounded by like souls... I am not of that caliber, but the tiny creative spark in me flares with hope and happiness for the fellows who are.

Wonderful story. The Eternal City is like no other. Do not go in August. Do your HW. Buy tickets online to avoid hours in line. Go to historic sites early in the day or later in the day. If time allows visit other sites in Lazio and get lost. No, really. Interacting with locals will be the best part of your trip.

I can’t imagine the level of pretentiousness of that table, everyone trying to outdo each other in a time when most people only listen to another person long enough to talk about themselves, the salon meets the selfie. Are you allowed to wear any other color than black ? Are two or more scarves required at all times ? In an age when people rightly see and acknowledge privilege, one of the last areas may be this kind self-congratulatory silliness. I’d enjoy a conversation with my plumber more than with these dilettantes.
