Badd Medicine here and its reaction time
Five years have passed since Hiccup and Toothless united the dragons and Vikings of Berk. Now, they spend their time charting the island's unmapped territories. During one of their adventures, the pair discover a secret cave that houses hundreds of wild dragons -- and a mysterious dragon rider who turns out to be Hiccup's long-lost mother, Valka (Thikumporn Rittapinun). Hiccup and Toothless then find themselves at the center of a battle to protect Berk from a power-hungry warrior named Drago. The film was written and directed by Dean DeBlois, and stars the returning voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, and Kristen Wiig, along with Cate Blanchett, Djimon Hounsou, and Kit Harington joining the cast.

My favorite thing about these movies is that they do the thing that animation rarely seems to do, at least not as well. There's growth and aging the likes of which you rarely see animated. It's clear that hiccup is older in the movie and he's damn near a full grown adult in the third. It gives that feeling you got with the Potter films, growing up with the characters year to year.

It isn't just that he is older, remember, his mom said it had been 20 years and Hiccup was a baby, so that would put him 14 to 15 in the first movie and around 20 in this one.

I always get emotional when Stoick is courting Velka. He never got to say goodbye those 20 years ago, believing her gone and basically having moved on. But now that he's reunited he holds that note in the song, leaving it open for her to decide if she wants to reciprocate. And when she continues to hesitate after his second attempt he starts to turn away, accepting her refusal and interpreting it as that time of them being together was over. And I believe he would have fully accepted that and moved on with his life, because this time he at least gets to say goodbye.

Fun fact: In the dad’s death scene, the reason Hiccup told his dad no! while he was trying rushing in and to save Hiccup is because Hiccup has trained for moments when Toothless goes wild. Hiccup was planning to dodge Toothless. So Hiccup felt like it was truly his fault when Stoic died. 😢

I was the Oak during the funeral scene, too. 😂Also to give context to Stoick's behavior from the first movie now that you've seen the second one, the only person Stoick had ever seen command dragons prior to Hiccup is Drago, who murdered all of the other chieftains when they refused to hand over power to him. Imagine seeing such horrible cruelty carried out in front of your eyes and then the next person you see with that unique and incredible power is your own son. Not only your son but your son who has spent his whole life seeking acceptance and is now gaining attention and authority among his peers. Are y'all familiar with the proverb, "The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth"? Hiccup could have very easily become Drago as a result of circumstance and environment. I think a lot of Stoick's anger came from fearing that his son having this ability would lead him down a dark path and turn him into a conqueror who destroys only for the pleasure of being king of the ashes.

Two things come to mind: This movie shows that Stoic and Hiccup are the same man, but in different ways. They are both just and honorable men. Hiccup had honorable albeit naive intentions of being the diplomat, believing he could win anyone over with reason. Stoic was also an honorable man, who preferred peace but understood that some people can't be won over, they must be defeated to protect "his own". Most animated movies add in the animals for comic relief, even giving them human characteristics and sometimes those of other species than their own. What's unique about Toothless is that, while adding in plenty of comedic moments and personality traits, there are some dramatic and even tragic sides to him in this film especially.

What I love most about HTTYD is the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless (which is not a surprise). But what makes me love this is the fact that they didn't do that typical "owner and his cute, silly pet" relationship, you know? You notice little things between them in the scenes, like Toothless helping Hiccup climb somewhere. They even tease each other! It really feels like a best friends relationship!

Hiccup's eulogy for Stoick hit me so hard in theaters when I watched this. I had never in my life really contemplated how to put into words the way I feel about my Dad. Especially if I had to say goodbye while doing it. I was 22 years old at the time and just bawling like a baby because Hiccup was just saying everything I felt perfectly about my father. How can I ever live up to someone as great as my father?!

I just wanna hug Oak. Yall made Hiccups speech even more emotional with the removing of the music and lowering it. My God. I can't cry at work, stop it. Well Drago was trying to take out Hiccup. To me that hits different when you think about it. Being killed by your best friend. Stoick decided to sacrifice himself for Hiccup. This trilogy is one of my all time favorites. Toothless is my all time favorite animated creature. The music (especially the main theme) gets me emotional every time I hear it. And what I love most is that it feels like the series matures with its audience. You see over 3 movies the maturing of all the characters and the visuals just blow me away every time I watch. I have to remind myself that it is a CG animated movie and not already live action with some of the shots they get.

This goes out to The Oak from a father of 2 and being very close in age to you (while being nowhere near as burly if I might add). Never apologize for when these movies get at the emotions. I've found ever since having kids when there is plot and narrative focus on parent (especially father as a guy myself) and child dynamic anymore I'm a pretty easy mark. Get a lot of dad-sad dust in the eyes. But feeling that stronger connection is always a good thing--even, or especially in these animated movies. It goes to show how well they mix in that emotional truth. It's not an insignificant thing for viewers to see examples of masculinity being able to express those emotions as well. Hang in there!

53:28 the reason valka is not explored in the 1st movie is that in early stages she was actually present but then the directing team made the choice to cut her out so that they can focus on this rocky son and father relationship. And since there is literally no book paralel in the 2nd movie they had to chance to invent her so elements that could've been put in the 1st movie were not even created yet.

While Drago is a power-hungry conqueror who wants to become unstoppable and take over the world, it’s important to understand that that’s not his entire motivation. His desire to dominate dragons is motivated by revenge for dragons slaughtering his family, burning his village and tearing off his arm when he was a boy. As a result, he was left with nothing in his childhood and lived in fear, but then he vowed to rise above that fear and make all dragons live in fear of him, just as he once lived in fear of them. So while Drago certainly took it too far, his motivation for wanting to overcome and dominate dragons is at least an *_understandable_* one.

I personally really enjoyed the Netflix series that was set between the first and second films. It gave a lot of depth to the changes and developments that all the characters went through in those 5 years, but what's great about this film is that within the first 10 minutes it flawlessly gets the audience up to speed on how relationships have changed and how much Hiccup and toothless have bonded.

I love the way they give Toothless so much personality. I was worried when seeing 2-3 that they would kind of just make him a "normal dragon". But the story is about a young man and his dragon, not a young man with a dragon, so giving him his own character and traits is nice. A crazy movie that was cranked from 5 to 10. I LOVE IT!

Think about it, you're seeing the only woman, that the only man you both fear and respect (and would even follow to Hell) ever loved. Alive, after thinking she was dead for 20 years. That's not something you just say. That's something you have to actually see for yourself. Or as he eloquently puts it: "...You MIGHT want to take this one."

The How to Train Your Dragon trilogy was a long journey, I watched the first one in theater and became big fan right away. The next one will need more tissues so be ready. Yes, Toothless is adorable. If you want an animated movie with a gut punch, then try the Anime "Grave of the Fireflies", in Japanese dub. It was so much fun Also in the show(it’s a prequel of the 2nd movie it’s after the first before the second) Its where Hiccup actually gets the idea and tests out his wing suit, his fire sword, and a bunch of other stuffs. It was really good. At the end it was revealed that there was an egg of the giant alpha dragon in this movie and that’s the egg that the bad guy of this movie raised

it's a fantastic franchise. They really really creted something special with these films that is very hard to recreate. I'd say easily one of the best franchises ever created. I literally grew up with the first one, I was 9/10 when it came out and went to the cinema with my parents, I then rewatched it on DVD over and over again over the years every couple months because it's just such a fantastic movie. Everytime there was nothing on tv I'd throw in How to Train your Dragon because you just don't get sick of this movie and then later the second one as well (which tbh at first completely went over my head for some reason) after I realised they're actually making a franchise out of this. Imagine what an amazing experience it was for me then to watch the third one at the movies in 2019 10 years later, now as an adult and seeing this story come to an end. It was pretty much like I was saying goodbye to my childhood as well at the same time, you know what I mean? man ... let me tell you, me and my friend we both cried our eyes out. I've never gotten so emotional at the movies before😂 the little 6 year old girl sitting next to me celebrating her birthday at the movies actually tried to cheer me up and was like „aww don't cry" 🥹 such a sweet kid😂❤ meanhwile me at 19 years of age cried uncontrollably into my coca cola 😌👌🏻.. I really couldn't pull myself together and looked like a panda bear after. They recently announced that there's going to be a live action adaption and I honestly really just don't know If it's going to work .. they could easily mess this up and again I'm asking myself, why reboot something that is already perfect as it is?😅.. but your guys' reaction was absolutely wholesome. You are easily one of my favorite reactors out there. Your emotions are always so true and it's so much fun everytime. And I really love your discussion and insights afterwards as well.

Just finished watching woooo!!! I am so glad you guys loved this film too! I loved the heavier tones, this movie definitely fits for an older audience feel. Hiccup going from I believe 15 to 20 or similar age, leaving his childlike view of his world to a more adult view. It fits how the first movie had a more upbeat warmth with a lot of it, where as this is more based in reality like feel with how you can't always reason with people. That there are truly bad people and those who just wish to hurt others. Hiccup was always the nonviolent type, but he thought he could bring peace. I cried during the death and funeral scene when I first saw it. I am so so so glad you left in the part with Oak breaking and your conversation about him crying afterward. Cause when I saw Oak tear up I broke too and cried with him. I lost my mother in 2016 and I still feel the pain and remember it all so vividly. It was somber and sad, but was so powerful in this movie. I can't wait for your reaction to HTTYD 3!!
