That's very kind of you, Te Mana Performing Arts. I've been off the boil for almost two months because of the Covid crisis affecting parts of Nadi and Suva. As a result, every village in Fiji is off limits. Hopefully, the Ministry of Health will get the situation under control soon and I can resume what I absolutely love doing.

Thank you, sir. As I wrote to Alipate below, I could and wanted to say more. Navosavakadua's possessions had just returned last Saturday from Ba where the Methodist Church had been praying over them for a month because Navosavakadua was associated with paganism.

Thank you so much for this video and especially the respect you have showed our people for our customs and our history. My grandmother was from Naivuvuni village in the Ra province, not all that far from where you were at. Makes me miss my homeland so much, but also brings back so many good memories!

Just seeing this now . My great grandfather ( Navosa’s brother ) and his wife and one son were sent to Joma, Kadavu , where the couple died and are buried. Their son returned and continued to live in Drauniivi until his death. His younger brother, my grandfather, was rescued by his uncle, Navosa’s older brother, and taken to another village, where he was raised, so he never went to Kadavu with the rest of the family . Thank you for highlighting this.

Bula GRB Grace Freight. That’s a very interesting observation. The Pale Blue Dot is actually a famous photo taken from space of planet earth. Yes, I agree 100%. True history is indeed in places like that small museum in Drauniivi village. I’ve also found out more about the story of the village in contemporary accounts and looking at the bigger picture of what was happening in Fiji at the time. 😃

Thank you for that, Mika. I know a thing or two not so much about Nayaulevu village as the Tikina Tokaimalo. It's a fascinating place. The Malaita tribe at Maniava settlement, Tokaimalo, is originally from the Solomon Islands. They were kindly given land there to resettle. In 1997, the Tikina wanted to re-introduction the iTaukei court system (Mataveilewai iTaukei) last used between 1954 to 1967. This would have been a good experiment. And, more than anything else, I want to hear the story about Nakauvadra from Nayaulevu.

What British has done can not be forgiven and forgotten.

Probably Tongans have no business in the Fijian History lol but I was reading up a book and it said during Thakombau's wars he asked George Tupou the 1st for his help and the Tongans did arrive. They attacked Lauan side but didn't say if they helped Thakombau inland to where this battle was at? Any Historians here that can give me some answers about the Tongan little warriors that helped Thakombau lol

Yes Ratu Cakobau and his Bauan forces were defeated at Kaba in the province of Rewa somewhere in the 1800s, that was before he accepted Christianity. After he accepted Christianity, he requested King George Tupou of Tonga for help in defeating the heathen warriors of Kaba. King George Tupou sent a group of Tongan warriors (100+ men) to help his newly ally Bau and Cakobau in defeating the resistance forces of Kaba which was successful. Many Kaba warriors died with few losses on Cakobaus side thanks to the Tongans.

Tongan little warriors? Fijian grandmother told me Tongans were Giants and ruled Fiji. I always wondered why Fijians are bigger and faster than people from Papua and the Solomons.

Maybe we should of had a statues of Navosavakadua and the tribes people of the interior (Colo) who put up some of the most bravest resistance against British settler colonialism. What we got instead of statues of the chiefs who sold us out.....That's why it's so important to KNOW YOUR HISTORY!

Ratu Navosavakadua is buried in Rotuma and it is my earnest desire to have his remains repatriated to and reburied in one of the villages of the Vatukaloko, possibly Drauniivi, not with this current government but a subsequent one. A gesture like that would go a long way to healing a historic injustice done to the Vatukaloko.

@@ThePaleBlueDot It's telling that in Fiji's official narratives & remembrance, there is no room for those who shaped & resisted colonialism. Apolosi Nawai (the founder of Viti Kabani) was also exiled on Rotuma. For the colonialisers and their enablers, the removal of these "rebels" was necesssary for the arrangement between Crown & Chiefly hierarchy to survive. There was a similar uprising from the Lovoni highlanders in Ovalau, as punishment "KING" Cakobau sold the entire tribe of Lovoni into servitude, and @ £3 per head, he made £1,100. That's over 350 people! There is a brilliant book called "Disturbing History: Aspects of Resistance in Early Colonial Fiji. 1874 - 1914." by Robert Nicole. This history of resistance has been documented - it just hasn't been taught. It's Diwali, so happy Diwali to you - keep shining the light. 🪔

@@solomonk3299 yes, I know that book. It is very informative. Of course you’re right. People like Apolosi Nawai and Ratu Navosavakadua have disappeared from history. Fijian history, if the average person didn’t know any better, seems to be an interaction solely between the British colonial government and chiefs. Ratu Mara once talked about Fiji being given with “lolomas” to Queen Victoria. It neglects to mention that there was a lot of blood shed before and after 1874 in suppressing the Colo tribes.

So true bro. I just read about the history of the people of Colo and their fight against Cakobau, the white settlers, and the Colonists. Very brave people and as a decadent of the Lovoni tribe in Ovalau, I will never forget their brave fight against Cakobau and his colonial ally.

We know about missionaries going to indigenous peoples land with guns and bibles. Africa, india, south america etc. They give you bible and take your land. what do you say about Fijians who believe in christianity now? I can never understand black or brown people who hate everything about slavery but not christianity

Hi Nilesh. I wasn't able to reply to your earlier comment but thank you for praising my enthusiasm. The main point is that the colonial power, the British, in protecting the rights of European settlers and Cakobau, were able to get away with the mistreatment of the people of Drauniivi by banishing them and Navosavakadua just because they were asserting their right to their ancestral land. I will return to the story again soon.

There is a lot more to tell that I didn't say at the time such as how the story of Navosavakadua was deliberately misrepresented by the British colonial authorities and how history (mainly through Pacific Islands Monthly) got the story completely wrong.

The Myths of those people...and not all Fijian People. No one in Fiji came into existence from the mountains....they all came to Fiji via sea. Based on Mitochondria it has been proven... that those on Viti Levu came in after those that were in the Lau group arrived. The Asian Migration came 2000 years after the Eastern migration... The northwestern migration came via the Melanesian belt arrived 3500 years after the several East migration arrived. When speaking of Such Myths from Ra and Ba you are speaking of the melanesian migration ...they are somewhat the last to arrive....3500 after the first arrival. The lapita is from the Asian Migration and not the melanesian migration. Several tribes in Guadalcanal spoke of some of their people that were castaway from their village for cannibalism... If one is familiar with Guadalcanal language and Ra Dialect..they have similar words. We may have here a group of people redefining themselves as people of the mountains when in fact they were castaways from Guadalcanal. Now that is for your investigation and fact finding mission. No offense is stated here it is based on science. Mitochondria research has stated that...all else are cooked up for a certain era and which had served its purpose. With all due respect to the scientific findings via mitochondrial function, one should not forget to acknowledge and accept the authenticity and credible vast amount of historical data from the pre-science periods. Because pre-science historical data "rubber stamped" as facts (and taught at USP by indigenous Oceania lecturers themselves) that there were three waves of migration into the Pacific specifically for Fiji; first were the Melanesians, followed by the explorers and then the last was from mainland China. And these we pass on in good faith to our younger generations who would most probably during their lifetime come up with newer findings with the use of more advanced methodologies. Thus it is crucial that we teach and show them the way forward how to understand the whole cosmos of how they came to be amidst the numerous various theories. This is something in itself majority of our iTaukei people (especially those who have been brought up in or around the urban areas), sadly have begun to lose cognizance of today.

@@sinuesireli7012 Yes, I agree. There's so much history, it's incredible. For example, I think I may be on the scent of a few lost Nanga Enclosures in Wainimala and Saqani. These were pre-Christian initiation ritual sites that have a fascinating history. The few that survive are covered in weeds and hidden by jungle and little known. They were abandoned in the 19th century.

@@ThePaleBlueDot That explanation of Mana is from an English dictionary it has a much deeper meaning than that even the above description separates Melanesian Polynesian and Maori hello Maori aren't part of the the 2 groups. and you keep saying Cakobau's forces they were The Force of the Wesleyan mission Cakobau had no power he was waging war on behalf of the Methodist church that's the real story.. I do know people from Drauniivi Nasoqo and other surrounding villages.that is the Taukei politeness that they won't tell an outsider the full story or the Nai tukutuku I Loma Ni vale.

What was not apparent in the vlog was the fact that during the "sevusevu" which lasted for nearly two hours I was told the full story which more or less agrees with the historical account (not the colonial one). I've visited the village many times since the vlog and I keep being thanked by villagers especially the turaga-ni-koro.
