A Doctor's Guide to UK - Hands on surgical training (Episode 6)

Me and Aditya are back with our experiences regarding the surgical hands-on training and what one can do to make the most of their training. We speak about how it differs for deanery trainees from those on middle grade positions. As always, feedback and inputs are most welcome and if any queries - email us at

These video series are a gold mine of tip and tricks for a Mch candidate. Thank you ! Will keep in mind to ask for the appraisal/Goal/PDP meeting. I do have one question, when we ask for this meeting, who do we set this with? The consultant or the team?

Yes, it's one of the things that I've found to be very important and benefits in more ways than we believe.

It needs to be asked for specifically and requested from/with your supervising consultant. It would benefit to take this meeting at SHO level as well. Keep a document of your discussions from the meeting and use it when you finish your posting. It will be an official record of the training you have received and what you have learned, because there is no objective control from outside.

Hi Sujay, it depends on the experience you have, but on average before tax you can earn anywhere above 50000 pounds a year. Expenses can vary from person to person, so hard to comment. However if you join the WWL edge hill course, about 700 pounds a month would be the fee for 2 years. These are approximate figures, please note and vary from person to person and job to job.

Sir, I will be joining the course this year. I have a big doubt in my mind regarding the course. I want to pursue my career as an arthroscopic surgeon. How is the arthroscopy exposure there? Would I learn arthroscopy and arthroplasty there? or will it be just trauma exposure?

Hi Avinash. Orthopaedics forms less than 15 % of the entire MRCS syllabus. Most of it is what you learn in MBBS and internship, for part A, (gen surgery, ortho, anatomy, a bit of ENT). part B is osce that needs a lot of practice and right resource for the stations.
