A Diet for Patients with Crohn’s and Colitis

New research is suggesting that the foods we eat can change the environment of the gut and that some dietary patterns will aid in healing the gastrointestinal inflammation that patients with Crohn’s and Colitis experience. Making these changes can be difficult, but this video shows two patients who feel the changes are worth it and that they are doable.

I had Microscopic Colitis and found it was caused by the antidepressant, Zoloft. When I went of that medication the Colitis was healed. My sister has Crohn’s and I know what a difficult journey it can be. 🙏🏼

I was diagnosed with colitis three days ago. This video was very helpful…especially Linda’s food preparation portion. I’m going to start a diary of foods I eat and my bathroom habits today. I let this go on far too long, thinking it was stress related and a week’s vacation was going to cure my issues. Thank you all very much for posting this information!

good luck and an Excel spreadsheet may help you keep track. I am allergic to corn and yeast and food diaries are harder than I expected. Keep trying. Food tracker may help - there might even be one for colitis patients.

@@Jackie-us6sl Nothing special,. Spring Valley.. 50mg zinc, 100mg mag citrate, D3 5000iu.. Tbh I'm not super consistent with the supplements.. Of the three, I feel the D3 is most important.. If your flaring up and losing fluids the zinc and especially the mag is important.. Also if you're losing fluids try switching to (Low sodium Salt). It's half sodium and half Potassium Citrate.. It's a VG electrolyte replacement.. Use it to salt your food and it should be of some benefit.. I occasionally do eat some carbs maybe some oven roasted potatoes, or a little bit of white rice and sometimes the occasional bun over a big cheeseburger.. avoid fibrous vegetables like the plague in fact just avoid all vegetables like the plague, (fruits too) .. be as strict as you can but don't beat yourself up if you can't go 100% even if you go 80% or 90%, it's still better than pretty much every other diet.. if you're flaring up I would try to go as close to 100% straight animal food as possible..

Sorry, Ashley. I know you wish you could have a normal life. My issues hit around 11 and it's been a journey for sure. God bless your digestion, sweetheart and hang on to the good parts of your life. Literally some days it may be a pet or a pretty tree or a small flower. But savor everything you can be grateful for because when you are sick a lot I think you develop a superpower for honing in on the joy you can find in the good moments. HUG. Millions suffer. I think "normal" is over reported. That fact has helped me cope many times - that it's not just me. That I'm not some freak that's the only one sick. I'm just one of the many who is stricken with something for which I have no cure, YET. Sick is our normal. I'm so happy you had a few normal years. I pray it will go back to that for you. Sorry for the pain, luv. Hang in there. I am watching my loved one suffer with it now and it is very hard. I have had several good year and oddly when I get a reaction my whole body panics and I have to really calm down to handle it. What we go through isn't easy - I have allergies but know you are strong and appreciate how hard you work to keep your good humor. You're a champ.

Diet is also the programming of food, they say how they manage their foods, not what these foods are and i think it's because not all patients eat/tolerate the same foods, even the good days, that's why the food diary is important. But when things are not going well, then yes the foods that must be avoided are the same.

Our microbiome is out of whack,,, Due to Stress, Antibiotic use can wipe out the whole diversity of our microbiome where bad bacteria can thrive. Alot can play a roll. But get a complete microbiome test done and see where your gut stands, So you can base a diet on certain foods that dont feed your bad bacteria so they can thrive.

This is complete and utter tripe. Its nothing to do with diets and food you eat. I have had IBD for 45 years. I have been through all the non sense of food allergies, fibre diets, low fat, low carbs, high fat, high carbs etc etc. Plus all the other reasons "Its an over dominant mother you know", or the favourite standby "Its stress you know" Its random and an autoimmune disease; you can go ten years or have three flare ups in 6 months. If you have it there is no cure, you have it for life - except complete removal of intestine and colon. When it flares up the only thing that works is Steroids and Mesalazine to maintain. It is a problem with an oversensitive immune system that is on the verge of instability - a trigger comes along and off it goes. It is like an underdamped 2nd order differential equation.

Agree. What annoys me is videos like this thinking it can be cured by diet alone. Its all nonsense, you need to stop the immune system attacking itself.

Oh, how wrong you are. The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is not like the others. It eliminates all carbohydrates except for monosaccharides in order to starve out pathogenic bacteria that overpopulate the gut. The diet starves out the bad bacteria and feeds the good. It also relies on the use of homemade yogurt to provide your gut with healthy gram negative bacteria (Thermophilus and Bulgaricus). The overuse of sugars, starches, preservatives, fillers, and gums in the typical western diet is the reason for the recent increase in inflammatory bowel disease. If diet were not a factor, we would not be seeing increases in diagnoses. There are some genetic predispositions in some ethnicities, but even those people see success with the SCD. I suggest anyone who wants to know more to ignore nosnibor's comment and purchase the book Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall and visit Dr. Suskind's NIMBAL website (from Seattle Children's Hospital) as well as a site called PecanBread. There are stages you'll want to follow to guarantee success, but you won't know if it works for you until you try it.
