A Day In Transnistria

No state in the world recognizes this country. Its passport and currency are not valid anywhere. For Pridnestrovie, better known as Transnistria, it is the all day life since 23 years. Own parliament, military, money and an anthem created a new identity.
Placed right in between Ukraine and Moldova, Transnistria is a frequent guest of regional current affairs. However the media titles are not very welcoming: „black hole“, „a-want-to-be-state“, „the last Soviet Republic“, etc. Monuments dedicated to Lenin and communist symbols still make the headlines, but what is hidden behind the visible facade? How do Transnistrians live and what are their worries? „A Day in Transnistria“ lifts the veil for the lives of ordinary citizens of an unrecognized republic. Their hopes, fears and daily routine are shown in this debut piece, produced by Alisa Bauchina, Simon Erhardt and Martin Franke.

Terry Harris the mmmmm thing was about the last paragraph you wrote. In my experience not every Eastern European person was deluded some were homesick for whatever reason and I even met a Polish lady that was homesick for a few months because she left everything behind including her then boyfriend then they broke up after she returned from a holiday home since they weren’t getting on well prior to her coming here the UK then a few months later she met a Indian- British boy, got married, had children and they have now been together for 14 years had it not been for these problems they probably would not have crossed paths at least not in this way. I have a close friend from Lithuania that has been back and forth but he’s now settled here because he came to the realisation that in Lithuania he’s not able to live the life he wants. I could go on and on for hours. You weren’t fully wrong, I do know people that have returned but many are still here.

Terry Harris My father works in construction a person is person regardless of what they do for a living. I know the feeling of seeing your industry stalling or when there are little to no jobs in what you qualified for. I used to see a lot of people let’s say 10 or 20 going into a 3 bedroom flat or whatever for a couple of years because rent and bills here are horrendous specially in London. Now it’s almost impossible because most landlords use agencies to find their tenants and they often want professionals, people with good scoring rates or people who are ready to pay six months worth of rent.

If only Russia could strike a damn deal with Romania/Moldavia , i think this nation should be recognized if the people wish to do so via a referendum. There is no point otherwise , it makes Moldavia and Transnistria unsafe and poor. Damn politicians they will never understand that the wish and the benefit of the people comes first. Hi from Romania!

  • @LewChain

Geto Dacul Transnistria doesn't even know what they want. Why would they vote in the Moldavian election that just happened? And they also want their own thing? It doesn't sound ideal. Regarding Moldova, Romania helped a lot financially, and therefore I personaly care for Moldavians. I hate when things aren't either black nor white. If Transnistria doesn't like unity, I hope Moldova will consider it. After all, Moldova speaks Romanian mostly. Transistria doesn't seem to; so I guess they should come forward and establish their state and we should also recognize it once and for all. Although it is not going to happen soon, it's a mess there.

What you fail to understand is that it is fully in Russia's interest to keep both Moldova and Transnistria poor. By striking a deal, the rest of Moldova would move towards the West. Same situation in Ukraine. Russia wants Donetsk and Luhansk to remain part of Ukraine in order to create permanent dysfunction.

Seeing this video really reminds me of North Dakota in the United States. North Dakota may not have been a communist dictatorship like Transnistria, but it certainly has some commonalities with Transnistria from its older, crumbling infrastructure to its rural, aging population being left behind by the world economy and living in the shadow of the 20th century. Until the oil industry sprung up in 2012-2013, many people (especially young people) in North Dakota would flock to Minnesota or the West Coast looking for jobs or to escape the brutally harsh winters comparable to that of Russia because there was just no incentive for them to stay there. I hope the people of Transnistria can hopefully achieve prosperity through economic cooperation with its neighbors and hopefully re-opening its mines which was no doubt the economic lifeline of the country, similar to that of North Dakota's oil industry today and wheat industry of the 1920's.

Uhmm about Estonia, we still have some Russian sounding street names. "Red street", "St. Peterburg road", "Russia street" etc. Also plenty of memorial statues/stones around Estonia that commemorate Russia. Those street names were also renamed by Soviets from former names so why shouldn't we rename them back? How come Soviets were the ones to rename them rightly? It is true though that there aren't any Lenin/Stalin statues in the smack down middle of town center as it should be. Why glorify someone who invades.

Tonite "literally nobody cares about you" I .'literally' was replying to what the guy in this video said and was calling it out as semi-BS. You also replied so...kind of a double standard you are going for there. We also aren't crying about anything, our country is trying to catch up to Western/old Europe living standards - we have a goal. By some measurements Greece and Portugal are already on the same par. Ironically some countries clinging to their past glory days are the ones crying. Russia has more resources contributed to call out "Reemerging facists" in Europe than Estonia has anything going against Russia. They might be our some sort of Boogieman along the small number of migrants we get but 99% of our lives are towards building our state up. You have oil and the most natural resources any country has, you still are slightly below Estonias living standard and its 2016. Think about that for a second.

Tonite Well lets look at actual sites with some statistics and not just blind "you this and that". 2015 main partners were EU members (75% export, 83% import). Main export partners were Sweden 19%, Finland 16%, Latvia 10%. For imports Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania. Russian share of our export market is 7% (almost the same as Lithuania with 6%) and import market 6% (same as Netherlands). Info from stat.ee . As for population...are you serious? Population size does not really matter when it comes to PPP per capita or other such statistics. Thats the idea of such stats, it makes it about individuals so you can compare. I don't care if my neighbors have 140m or 440m people. As long as I can earn a decent wage I am fine. Besides our small size doesn't really matter on a bigger scale either. Russia is a federation of many semi-official states or areas. You are sentralised to Moscow region in terms of power. If you go by that we are in a vanilla federation with the EU and we adopt some guidelines and laws given by EU. So if you want to "scale up" then you would go with EU or the other Baltics that would make us comparable to Finland. I find it quite unique and epic that a people that numbered around 500,000-3,000,000 in history managed to create some kind of state/nationality after all the years being under some other power. Our passport, therefor identity, is more trusted than that of a Russian citizen.

You are supposed to thank Russia and not hating. If they were that bad they would had kept your country in 1990 and there would be no one who could do anything about it, but they let you go. What does the population and country size have to do with wealth? - you have no idea what it means to control such gigantic country that has more boarders then any othe country in this world with such venomous neighbors like estonia. its so easy to provide internet and infrastructure to everyone in such a small "country" I really wish you had boarders with Chechna or Turkey i would laugh my ass off

The country is unfortunately poor. The jobs are difficult. But it looks so peaceful there. There aren't many Transnistrian's partaking in the Moldovan Protests.. If only Russia would allow its Union into the Union State of Russia and Belarus, then everything would be ok, but I know that the International Community would become outraged and further isolate Russia if it recognizes the Transnistrian Republic. Even in March 2015 when Russian Officials flew to Transnistria to donate them 5 Electric Buses and other Humanitarian Aid, they were stopped and prevented from taking off into Moldovan Airspace for a few hours.. Hopefully, soon, maybe there will be peace in Eastern Ukraine, and when there will be peace in the DPR and LPR, then I'm sure the process of integrating TMR can slowly begin!

+drusik, even as I support Moldova, Ukraine & Georgia joining the EU, I still support Transnistria, Southern & Eastern Ukraine, Abkhazia & the other breakaway territory in Georgia to join Russia if they so wish. Let's face it, the majority of the people in Transnistria, Southern & Eastern Ukraine & Abkhazia don't want to join the rest of Moldova, Ukraine & Georgia in joining the West, they want to join Russia & the Eurasian Economic Union, so I'm absolutely in support of them being recognized as independent states & them breaking away from their host countries to join Russia if to so wish, while the rest of their host countries join the EU & the West. It's a win for everyone in that scenario; Russia still gets to keep influence & allies in Eastern Europe while the rest of them get to join the West. Neither side is going to have it all & both sides want it all. But, sorry West & Russia, you can't have all of that land in my book. Share the land, call it a day & attempt to try to get along with each other, even if you're both stuck in 1975.

Cody Crouse I understand where you're coming from. If Kosovo wanted independence that NATO had to bomb it out of Serbia, why can't Transnistria, South Ossetia, Akbhazia, Nagorno-Karakbo have the same priviledges? Only because Politician's don't care about the actual people, actual democracy. It's mostly because the People's support isn't in their favor. The US never condemned Chechnyan Terrorist attacks and Separatism, even though they took elementary school and theaters as hostages and fought alongside Al-Qeada. I bet if Crimea would be part of Russia and voted to join NATO, they'd be putting crazy pressure on Russia if the situation would be Vice-Versa. Scotland wants to have an independence referendum, that for some reason is legal (more or less), but small nations that fought for theirs aren't recognized, even though the US should understand Independence Fighting the most.. American Revolutionary War had 5,000 Spaniards and 15,000 Frenchmen die for our Independence!

Domestic violence against women is also very common, and it is even considered to be normal. Many people work abroad (mostly in Russia) to earn more money to be able to support their children who are left to the care of their grandparents. Russian propaganda is everywhere, that's what makes Transnistrian citizens love their country despite the misery they live in.
