Moldova, Transnistria and its relationship with Russia | VPRO Documentary

How is the relationship of Moldova and Transnistria with Russia? What happened in Moldova after a change of regime and the cooperation agreement with the EU? Are Moldova and Transnistria depending on Russia and if so, why? A documentary about Moldova, Transnistria and its relationship with Russia.
In this eight-part travel series, the Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius travels through Russia and visits the neighbor countries Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. What image do the Russians have of their neighbors and vice versa? What are the relations between powerful Russia and the other former Soviet republics? And how do the countries around Russia treat their Russian inhabitants? A series about propaganda and identity.
Moldova seems to stand still. There are still Soviet buildings everywhere. And since the change of regime, the streets have not been serviced. Until 2009, the Communists still had the say. Recently, a pro-European coalition is at the power, signing a cooperation agreement with the EU. Russia was not pleased about it so that no Moldavian wine could be exported anymore. Wine is one of the most important export products in Moldova. Everywhere you go, you can see vineyards.
The two largest wine cellars of the world are in Moldova. In Cricova you can find a tunnel system of 120 kilometers. During the Second World War, Jews were hidden in the wine barrels. Today you can find wine collections that belong to personalities such as Putin, Angela Merkel or John Kerry.
Moldova is the poorest country in Europe. No wonder that many young job seekers are leaving the countryside. The remaining Moldovans have to be satisfied with the money from abroad, even though the pressure from Russia is as big as their dependency. The oil and gas come for example mainly from Russia. Jelle visits the territory of Transnistria, which freed itself from Moldavia after a bloody war in the 1990s and now wants to join Russia.

Best documentary of your Russian series. Kept the western bias to a minimum (aside from one sequence), coming in contact with a diverse range of people, asking open ended questions, very good.

The journalist is either unaware/uninformed of some things or just lying with a straight face in order to dramatize and make his storytelling attract more viewership.

Transnistria is not Romanian and we don't care about it actually . Moldovans do though ( Bassarabians as we call them , because moldovans are romanians who live in the region Moldova wich is in RO ) . Rep Moldova is considered the second Romanian country . Romania is ofc the name of the country but it's like the German situation , it was more of an ideea for Wallahia and Moldova to unite with Transylvania and the rest of the romanian speaking regions , like Bassarabia ( now modern Republic Moldova , Bucovina - now part Southern Ukraine and Cadrilater - North-East Bulgaria )

Romania was never just one country , and some could try and argue that before Romania was a country it was named Wallahia but it was more of an ideea based on a common language in the region , romanian . Anyway about Transnistria or Pridnistrova as the locals call it .. it was part of Romania during WW2 along with Odessa region and heavily influenced by Russia , why would we want a failed state that lives in soviet times when we try to destroy everything about communism ourselves . It's simply not compatible... communism and the soviets destroyed our country , made the people poor and uncultured for 50 years . When "democracy" came back / aka oligarchy came in 89' we had a generation of idiots and corrupt people not just the politicians but the corrupt mentality was in the society . Most romanians don't know their own history as it is and as for Moldova and Transnistria they were not even allowed to have one after 45' and so created a fantasy history based on propaganda not historical truth .

I am a romanian from Romania and let me tell you this. Transnistria was NEVER a romanian land, it was always inhabited by non romanians. Moldova WAS part of Romania for a relatively SHORT TIME intheir history, but moldavans are NOT ROMANIANS just because they were part of Romania a few years. Their MENTALITY and their WAY OF THINKING is VERY DIFFERENT than romanian/european mentality. They expect more from the state, most of them admire Russia and the russian way and do not want to be identified as romanians even though they LINE UP FOR ROMANIAN PASSPORTS.😁 In my opinionMOLDOVA will NEVER succed and develop because of the moldovan population MENTALITY AND WORK ETHICS. I hope that I am wrong...

I am also romanian and I'm telling you you're historically illiterate and have no clue what you're talking about. Up until 1792 (when it became annexed by the Russian Empire) the territory between the Bug and Dnister was romanian (russian census 1792: ''49 out of 67 villages are completely romanian'' on top of those you had romanians in other villages, plus romanian shepherds). Of course after hundreds of years of massive colonization with slavs and russification policies, things changed, but historically the whole region is Romanian. You may have given up on the hundreds of thousands of romanians living in today's eastern republic of Moldova (Today's Transnistria) but I sure as hell haven't. So please, if you won't help, at least stop making pro-russian propaganda.
