i love that you opened up about losing a passion, even when it's temporary, it's very alarming when something so close to you that gives you meaning is suddenly far away from your mind. i'm so glad you share these things! that's how we progress as a collective - being honest about struggles. but also how you showed your breakthrough and coming back to your passion even stronger than before! i find it very relatable

This Dissertations Diaries series is 𝘴𝘰 helpful to me and my working through my history MA! I'm in the process of making plans to visit the UK to go to the archives this summer for my thesis, and I'm in that bizarre liminal space between excitement and dread (the latter is likely because I'm still trying to turn my 'research area' into a 'research question'). Seeing these diaries and how your ups and downs are very clearly a universal experience for history grads really helps me feel like I'm not out of my depth any more than anyone else, so thank you for these!

Her name was Sofia Duleep Singh. Her father Duleep Singh the boy maharajah of The Punjab was dispossessed of his kingdom after being defeated by the British in the Anglo-Sikh wars. A very interesting story of Duleep Singh and his suffragette daughter Sofia. Sofia was also a contemporary of the leaders of the Indian independence movement and an overall a very interesting woman. Anita Anand from the BBC has done some excellent research into her life.

Hi Kaelyn! Thank you for sharing your dissertation journey. This is the first video of yours that I watched, but it totally inspired some content ideas. I'm studying at Oxford for the Michaelmas Term, but I haven't posted much about my studies as I've been mostly focused on my food and travel content. I mostly share my updates on my blog/email list. But doing some type of diary sounds like a great idea!

Congrats and good luck to Cait! I just had midterms for my Masters and I can't believe how fast the time is flying by! So happy to see the smile back on your face, Kaelyn - glad you found your passion again. I'm sure it's common to lose hope in a program that intense. And I can't wait for the DOW video! I saw a few clips that I am sure are in the show but I only saw it once so I don't remember. (The books were better. Ha!)

oooh.. did you buy anything at the stationery shop? It looks lovely! I love that you're looking at popular literature to help round out our dissertation. That is so cool!! Thanks for Cait's YT channel - she will be my third Oxford person to follow. I love living vicariously through all of you! If I can't get my own History PhD, then I'll follow those who are! I hope your time at Oxford is going (or has been) well. What a lovely time of year to be there!

First, love your content such a fan I got this idea from my dissertation chair that was super helpful and it was to write five paragraph essays about whatever topic. It makes it a little bit easier to get all of your ideas out, without having to feel like you’re writing, full on mini papers which could be a little bit overwhelming. It also allows you to have some more opportunity to bridge to five paragraph essays for your dissertation as opposed to one larger paper. Good luck on your journey!

Currently, I am working in an environment that is not conducive to studying however I am making arrangements to conduct interviews at my al matar where my love for music education began and is the focus of my dissertation, talk about a full-circle moment.😊 Tfs

Hi! I have watched the video about how to get in Oxford University! Thanks for sharing such valuable information! As I am also in the US college, I am wondering if unofficial transcript is acceptable in the admission process. They say the transcript produced in student self service online systems are acceptable, but I want to ensure that. Thanks !

New subscriber. I love your journey, but I am a bit confused. I've watched this video and then the most recent one where you are at UCLA on a PhD journey (Episode 20). Did you transfer from Yale to UCLA? The Oxford journey is just connected to the PhD program, right? I teach college English, so I still want to get my PhD later. These videos in your series are very helpful. Have a great day.

@@KaelynGraceApple if not academia/tenure, what else is there? Could you do a video possibly on jobs for historians? I know I'd like to publish academic works (which university presses require PhD, but publishing in general does not). I'm thinking of going into the museum research field and most positions only require a master's. However I don't feel like I am an actual "historian" if I don't have the doctorate and a peer reviewed published work...
