Hey Grace, I'm due to start a history degree program at university - apart from these videos do you have any advice for potential history undergrads.
That passage around 26th minute broke me... in laugh!
Glad you enjoyed it lol
I would live to see all the tool you have to use for your history Phd journey. Ive seen laptops but also ipads, and i think you use a pen to write on the pad. Can you have a video going over all the tools/equipment you use and why/whatfor you use them??
Check out my PhD student workflow video but now I mostly only use my computer (rarely use my iPad at this stage of the program)
Excellent video and editing, as usual! I absolutely loved the song that you chose, at around 12 minutes! Kate seems like a sweetheart, and I absolutely love your friendship/partnership… It’s very touching!
🥺 thank you friend!
It's all the puzzle pieces you create in writing different paragraphs and notes that will help to pull it together, but revision is the hardest part. That's why I like writing the annotated bibliography and/or literature review (as I noted for a comment on another video) because you have a great deal of your work done. Piecing together begins the real, arduous task! Nice video.
♥️ thank you friend
I didn't fully read all of my sources for my master's thesis, but in teaching American Literature at the community college level, I realized some gaps in my thinking. We were just trying to get the thing done in graduate school, but now in preparing for my NEH project and later for the PhD, I find it more than necessary to read all the way through at least the primary sources. Reading the whole work(s) slows you down, but you get a fuller sense as well. Great video. I'm still binge watching and enjoying myself as well.
♥️♥️♥️
I swear you are my she-ro. You get more done than anybody I know. With the traveling, etc., and you still do quality work. I'm taking notes!
It is always easier for me to write the literature review section first.
Me too!
I'm also writing my dissertation right now and I have the exact feeling of needing to read everything before writing a chapter. I think the more we learn and know about a certain topic, the more careful we get because we have been practicing this for a long time. That's, in my opinion, an improved skill... or we're just procrastinating lol
I as wondering ; how the admission process works for someone coming from West Europe where we don’t have gpa per say ?
I am late to the game, but congrats on the scholarship, girly. Well deserved! Starting my comps soonnnnn
Thank you so much!! And good luck with comps friend!!
Will there be a way we can read your dissertation one day? I’d really like to. Thank you for sharing your experience and insights.
Yes! Everyone’s dissertation is uploaded to proquest upon completion
@@KaelynGraceApple thank you! That’s great to know. I won’t ever get the chance to do what you’re doing but I wish I could and I will love to read your work. Congratulations on your continued progress :)
that's great, but when do you put aside time for the relationships or family or....? I'm going to do a Ph.d but I'm really fresked out
Check out all my other KZread videos 🥰 I have time for friends, quality time with my partner, and running two businesses. It is absolutely possible but requires some serious time management
@@KaelynGraceApple thanks😍 I'll check it❤️
Did your parents foot the bill for your 8 years of school or do you have 1/2 a million in loans to travel and pursue something that will not give you a return on investment? But, now you probably get a clean slate with Biden's unconstitutional student debt relief (basically buying votes). Lucky you. Just heard that you used to ride horses professionally. Haha--just answered my question. Spoiled girl. P.S. you overuse the word "and".
Thank you for sharing your journey, Kaelyn! I look forward to hearing what is next for Accepted 🙏
Yay Cait! 🎉
🥰🥰🥰
Where did you get those notebooks? 😍 I am looking to do a change up in my current systems as I come to my first year review. Been feeling the burn this month after a lot of big deadlines. Still got a couple to go but June is looking to be a lot calmer. Would usually soothe the burn with a trip to Paperchase.😢
My planners and notebooks are all golden coil!
Truly grateful for this video!
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
So happy you are getting some R&R! I’m also looking forward to a break from my MA work in the next couple weeks.
I hope you get a restful break soon friend ♥️
I'm feeling myself burn out on lab work since I have been doing basically the same experiments since November. I look forward to taking a bit of a break from it in about a month when I have all the replicates I need done.
Hoping you get some rest soon my friend ♥️♥️♥️
Really loving the vibe of this video! It is helping me with my writing :) The music very peaceful! Hope you are doing well! I'll be here a lot 💓
Love your videos Kaelyn, and always have. I was a little uncomfortable with your reward system, though. As an autistic person, commonly reward systems like this are used and I am used to this. But - using food as a reward can be dangerous and if others adopt this method and have a history of eating disorders it could go south pretty fast. In addition, using a break as a reward may also be dangerous as we should always be able to take breaks whenever we need them. I am glad this works for you, but I guess where I got uncomfortable was endorsing this for others to use on your platform, as it could lead to unhealthy habits. Anyways, not trying to hate at all, I absolutely love your content, just some tips from someone who has had reward systems used on them before in this context.
Thank you for the feedback ♥️ I hadn’t considered it that way. This is what works for me but am not saying it would work for others
Omg wait you're Asian? Your family is so cute 🫶🏽🫶🏽. I'm surprised you study African American studies instead of Asian American studies, what made you go this direction?
Haha yes! My grandmother is Chinese and immigrated from Taiwan as a kid :) I strongly considered it actually! I was either going to study early American or motherhood and the cultural revolution in China but ultimately chose af am because of the political climate in the US and feeling like it was important for me to learn and teach the history of slavery in the Atlantic world and to engage with black feminist thought ♥️ I’m happy with my choice but I will always have an interest in Chinese social history as well :)
Hello All. I am working on a final paper for my leadership theory and foundations course. I am at the beginning of my doctoral journey.
Best luck!
Good luck with the next chapter! 😊
Thank you friend ♥️
2:13👏🏻
Moo just makes my heart flutter. 🥹
Mine too 🥺♥️
Hi! i’m going to graduate with my BA in English this week. I got full marks on my senior paper. i’ve been watching you for about 2 years
🥺 congratulations friend!!! And thank you so much for watching my videos
At 3:00. At least your committee does one chapter at a time submission. Many supervisors are strict with that format. Others are more lax and want several chapters or more. My friend submitted the whole PhD dissertation, over 400 pages. His committee were not happy with the content. He essentially had to do a major re-write on 80% of the dissertation. That took him almost a year. The other issue with PhDs in the social sciences and humanities is length. Some universities place limits on the number of pages, anywhere from 300 to 500 pages. Other universities have no limit. I have a friend who submitted a final draft of 750 pages for a dissertation on Russian history. All of this creates problems for the candidate who is waiting for feedback from the committee. Another problem is finding an external examiner to read such a tome.
Yes and yes! I am very grateful for a supportive committee who are willing to read chapters at a time and offer feedback ♥️ I know many are not so fortunate
I successfully defended my masters thesis!! Thank you so much for the video's they've always been so relatable and truly helped me during challenging times.
Oh my goodness!!! CONGRATULATIONS FRIEND!!!!!!!
I am glad that you decided to work in the grey: both self-maintenance and dissertation work. I am grinding finishing chapter 3 and starting chapter 4 for a mixed methods approach (my committee is torturing me jk). But I do little bits every day, including working out and talking with friends. I also have a full-time job that eats up a good chunk of my day. So the little bits are still moving me towards my goal. Hopefully, this restructuring recalibrates you in sustainable progress in all spheres of your life.
Thank you ♥️ I am hopeful this new approach will make this process much more sustainable and enjoyable. Will report back about how it goes 🤗
10:14 movement of body literally makes or breaks my day. It is so important.❤
Same for me ♥️ trying to find a way to make it an enjoyable habit. It was easier to do when I rode horses but now if I can’t make it to the gym I at least try to get in a long walk
@@KaelynGraceApple i have an office treadmill, and bench with 15lbs dumbbells next to my desk, so I can not ignore it and get it done. It has worked lol
That’s great! I used to have a desk treadmill but it didn’t quite work for me. Couldn’t get any work done while walking 😅
@@KaelynGraceApple oh no. You can’t walk and work. But you can walk for 15 mins just by taking one step from your desk 🤣🤣
Haha fair. I prefer to just head outside for a walk :) breaks up the day
How do you deal with burnout? Do you think your way of dealing with it helps? If yes, how far because I have been in a burnout since last few months because of my thesis. I don't seem to find a way out of it sometimes.
So far returning to my fundamental needs and reevaluating how I am budgeting my time has always worked to help get back on track after a burnout stint
I was inspired by your channel to start a 10 Day Productivity Challenge on my own channel and insta, and I was kind of slacking off with since day before yesterday with posting content regularly and also followong through with my habits (I'm neurodivergent so it's hard for me 😅). But this vlog definitely motivated me to get right back to it, so thanks!
I absolutely love to see this ♥️ I am cheering you on!
so excited to see whats next in the accepted journey!! 🤍
Me too! Cait and I have a few tricks tucked up our sleeves to reveal in August 😉
Totally!! And so glad to have Cait on the team too! Her journey to enter back into uni as a mature candidate has been so inspiring for me!
Recovering from burnout is hard, you will have to find healthy ways to improve your mental and physical health to make you happy to reset your mind and body.
Absolutely ♥️
if we're having to 'recover from burnout' every few months, there's so much more about the lifestyle that's unsustainable and can't be fixed with a feel-good week 😭 developing habits that can be prioritised within and see you through even the busiest, chaotic time is so much more important so you avoid 'recovery'. if those grounding habits are thrown out the window every time, then those habits aren't serving their purpose and need to be adapted.
Precisely what the video is about
♥️♥️♥️ Love that you model healthy habits around the diss
It’s a constant process of fighting the survival mode reflex in my brain 😅
Yay a Kaelyn video! I wanted to ask if you’d heard of or read Garth Nix’s Abhorsen trilogy since you’ve been reading a lot of fantasy, it’s really beautifully written and has some strong women main characters which I always love ❤
oh looking this up immediately
Because the "crisis episodes" tend to get more views ... that doesn't mean you should have (or vlog) more crisis or that there is anything lacking from your non-crisis episodes. People watch for one main reason: they're looking for inspiration and ideas in their own life. Moments of crisis is when we the viewer learn the most. I guess ... and it's not like you were looking for advice but ... the episodes that aren't getting as many views, consider as a whole: what ideas or motivation does this vlog inspire in others? Also ... your overall channel is amazing and the views will come. What will also happen is that the sporadic viewers find the crisis episodes, eventually they will get curious and go back through your channel and desire to see ... how these crisis began.
Thank you ♥️ logically I know this but it’s nice to have it acknowledged. Bless you, friend for your kind words. I hope my videos continue to connect with others
Recovering from burnout? I don’t know her 🌝
A constant cycle 😅
first comment! love your videos so much
Aw thank you so much for commenting!!
Currently on the end of my Master program and this was so encouraging, I hadn’t thought about listening to soundtracks which I do enjoy but hadn’t coupled them with my studying and while writing papers so I will be trying it. I always use lofi or Christmas instrumental which I love but this might be a good change of pace for me.
I think talking about your editing process and how you position the cameras on your walks (entrances and exits) might be useful. It would be you getting into the filmmaking process about how you make your decisions based on the vlog goal of the day, the locations, and what should be kept in and out for that particular task. I would be interested in that.
Oh I didn’t know people would be interested in this!
@@KaelynGraceApple Yep, it is the first thing that came to mind when you are walking off the street into an area. I thought, "Oh, did she already place that camera there?" You do your videos in terms of filmmaking so well that I have to remember that you are the only one doing the editing and the overall process. Therefore, what is that process? That means you would be getting into the "teaching" aspect of what you are doing. That would require a lot of thought process and work. I've been binge watching them all day. Impressive work.
Hang in there!! I've loved your videos during my PhD program. Just graduated a few weeks ago! 🎉 You got this too!!
Your puppy is life baby. I've watched three of your videos, and I am in love with your fur baby! Are you graduate teaching too?
New subscriber. I love your journey, but I am a bit confused. I've watched this video and then the most recent one where you are at UCLA on a PhD journey (Episode 20). Did you transfer from Yale to UCLA? The Oxford journey is just connected to the PhD program, right? I teach college English, so I still want to get my PhD later. These videos in your series are very helpful. Have a great day.
I went from community college to UCLA as a transfer student, did my masters at Oxford, am pursuing my PhD at Yale and will begin a research fellowship to complete my dissertation at Cambridge starting in September:)
@@KaelynGraceApple Beautiful. I got it. I was a bit confused. I teach at the community college level, so it is nice to see you transition well from that context. Your journey is inspirational. I'm blessed to be a subscriber. Take care.
Kaelyn thanks for your honesty and real feelings and sharing this with us. It’s so refreshing seeing this in today’s world. Thank you again and hugs for your beautiful little doggy xx
I'm writing my first ever article nd it's going so slow and frustrating 😔, but I'm sure I'll get it done ✅
Cheering you on!
The manuscript is gorgeous in this videography! I cannot wait to see the manuscript in other videos 🎉🎯🕊
