I grew up reading the Babysitters Club books. One character, Stacy, was a teen with diabetes, and in every book there was something to educate the reader about her condition. When she was diagnosed, Stacy also described her insatiable thirst and frequent urination. In later books she often had to explain to other kids and adults why she needed special diet accomodations -- I think once she had gone to camp and they tried to feed her apples or cake... She ended up dumping it in the trash after unsuccessfully arguing with the cafeteria staff. I loved those books and wish there were more kids stories portraying children living with disease or disability and being their own advocates!

Pro tip: If you don't want to brush your teeth, regularly chew sugarfree gum, especially ones that contain xylitol - this sugar substitute is actually an anti-bacterial compound that can reduce the amount of S. mutans (bacteria that causes tooth plaque) and P. gingivalis (gum disease) in your mouth. Of course, toothpaste also contains this chemical, so that's still probably better - but there are (oddly enough) alternatives.

Due to child neglect, i never established a habit of good hygiene in my formative years. Coupled with severe depression, stress, and other stuff that went undiagnosed, i struggled to even get out of bed in the morning in my early teens. Even now in recovery, i still struggle with my hygiene. When I first got braces in early February of last year, i started brushing my teeth twice a day every day. But after a week and a half of it, my water got cut off due to winter storm Yuri. Now, im trying to establish the habit, and having a waterpik that i got as a gift makes it a lot more fun. Im pretty sure if my water didn't already have fluoride in it, i probably would have lost all of my teeth by now. All of this is to say mental illness is rough and has severe effects on physical health, especially if you never established a habit of hygiene in your early development

@@poetryflynn3712Starches and acidic things are the worst culprits. That includes natural things such as fruit and grains. So, even if you eat a healthy diet, you still need to take care of your teeth. Apparently flossing is more important than brushing if you absolutely have to pick just one, but ideally you should be doing both to cover all the tooth surfaces. Tongue scraping is underrated as well, as that’s a large surface that food residue can stick to and plaque bacteria can still feed off. It’s really only mouth wash that’s a bit unnecessary, though if you couldn’t floss, brush, or scrape, I guess it’s better than nothing.

He has gone back to work and is not able to have any life outside of work- just painkillers and trying to sleep. The crash was completely not his fault and he has money coming, but he still goes to work until he literally can't stand. He thinks the employer 'depends on' him. Well maybe, but he's heading for a crash. I've been there. You don't get bonus points or go to heaven or get an honour medal for killing yourself so your employer can make money. He is going in today to tell them he just can't do it any more, just needed someone to tell him that it's okay :(

Infected teeth are no joke, and I say this from experience. Most painful thing I've ever been through. At the time, going to the dentist was my worst fear thanks to my childhood dentist who was impatient, painful and not gentle. My infected tooth scared me back into going to a different dentist who is actually caring and gentle. This was back in 2008 and to this day she's still my dentist. Moral of the story: take care of your teeth, kids. Seriously.

When people talk about depression, they rarely talk about the hygiene struggle. When you're especially depressed, it can be extremely difficult to find the motivation or energy to shower, or in this case, to brush your teeth. I wish it were easier to talk about, but so many people just don't get it and just brush it off as gross or being lazy. For those of us struggling with mental illness, it isn't always as easy as "just taking a shower" or "just brushing your teeth".

@@WittyMitch you are right. It all have to do with self. Here the thing you missed out on. Depression. Depression is the one of the causes that human being go through and they can end up offing themselves. Depression is up there with drug addiction. It is destructive. I am a Healthcare professional so I can testify what Depression does to men. Story time: I was called (ambulance) to a house of a man who was suffering a stroke again. When arrive to his house, his right side was essentially shutting down. Facial droop, slurred speech kicking in and he recognizes the sign and called. In the ambulance on the way to the hospital, he broke down and started crying. After 63 years of marriage, his wife left him and put a restraining order on him when he tried to reach out to talk to her and find out why is she leaving. Depression causes his stroke to happen again since he already had history suffering from it. Now this is an extreme case but it is the case non the less. Both men (my story and the doctor) have Depression hit them hard. When you take a vow at the alter through thick and thin, for better or worse, through good times and bad, both wives walk out on their husband. They get married despite the divorce rate being over 50% first time and 73% for remarriage and of these divorce, 80% are initiated by women. Remember when they get marriage they were happy and they get married and thought to themselves, is this the day where she will leave and rip everything from me. It is a compounding thing, 1. Lost his job: he feels like he is not a man, his ability to provide for his family is strip from him. 2. Lost his wife: as stated before through thick and thin, for better or for worst, in sickness and in health means nothing, and her departure from the marriage made him feel like he lost a piece of himself since he gave his all. Depression got stronger when his wife left. Probably took half or all of his resources in the process. 3. His mother departure from earth. This is the last straw that broke the camel's back. Show a little sympathy for the man. He probably didn't have anyone to vent and get help from so he cave in on himself as his world crashes around him. He sought comfort in food because he was looking for a way to alleviate his pain. Last note to you and sorry this is so long but I need to debunk your statement because your very statement is the reason why so man men don't want to open up since it comes off as lack of empathy and sympathy. Men have the highest percentage in ending themselvesand the cause for that is depression. Let speak to one another and help each other with our eternal struggle.

Some days I do really well, others I don't follow a diet at all and eat way too many sweets. When I saw this video on my "home" on KZread (I'm a subscribed watcher of Dr. Bernard and am notified whenever his video's are posted). I watched it again and it had a profound effect on me. Suddenly I understood with a new clarity how important it is to keep my blood glucose levels under tighter control and to eat a healthier diet. I weigh 160 (having lost 9 pounds so far in a month) but now I'm more concerned with my glucose levels. Thank you, Dr. Bernard, for doing these videos. I know how CJ feels. Back in 2020 I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes. This floored me because I’ve been an avid swimmer all my life. Except for avoiding all the obvious things I knew were bad for you, I never took my diet seriously. Well, I probably got away with it for 10 or 12 years longer than I would’ve had I not been a swimmer. Eventually, it WILL catch up to you. My blood glucose level was 531 mg/dL when I PRESENTED to the emergency room. Looking back, I cannot believe I never took the symptoms seriously. I never failed to brush my teeth, but I know all about the excessive thirst and frequent urination. Today I’m on continuous glucose monitoring, back in the pool and on a low-carb diet. I’m down to a half-dose of the two original medicines I was prescribed. Life is back to normal. I’m making a good recovery.
