A conversation with Jonas Renkse (Katatonia)

Музыка

Many topics were delved into in this conversation with Jonas Renkse of Katatonia. These included their upcoming tour in Australia scheduled for February 2024, the profound experience of resuming touring after a COVID-induced break, the meticulous care taken to preserve Renkse's unique vocal style during extensive tours, and the reception of Katatonia's 2023 album, "Sky Void of Stars." Furthermore, our discussion delved into the early days of Katatonia, potential rivalries with Gothenburg bands, memorable anecdotes from that era, the band's distinct emphasis on mood over speed and precision, the allocation of songs between Katatonia and Bloodbath, the challenges of juggling roles in two bands, Dan Swanö's impact on the Swedish extreme metal scene, and Renkse's visionary outlook for the future of heavy metal and extreme music.

Having a lot of listening experience behind me, and with all due respect to many great bands, I have not heard anything more amazing than when darkness, depression and melancholy intertwine so epically and captivatingly, forming something called "Katatonia". And "Dance Of December Souls" is simply the best creation in this genre. My opinion does not claim to be the ultimate truth, but damn it, who else did something like this...

I haven’t dug into that album yet. I’ve been stuck on their later catalogue (great cold distance and after). I’ve only been paying attention to Katatonia for the past 1.5 to 2 years or so. Great, amazing band. Kind of fun when you discover a well established band with a catalogue full of gems way after the fact 😁

I can confidently say this was one of the best interviews I've heard w Kat (Jonas). Delving into things not mentioned in the several dozens I've heard w Kat. I'm around both their ages yet I didn't really get into metal until my 30s. So I find it quite intersting hearing about the 90s scene.

Great interview. Was hoping to hear some news on Anders’ absence from the current tour, but great to hear nonetheless.

What a great smooth flowing interview, though Paradise Lost had a major impact on Katatonia, i remember reading that Greg Mackintosh's jaw dropped when he heard Brave Murder Day, goes to show that band's that influenced a style of metal can get blown away by the band's that they influenced, Katatonia early material just took the baton in their own direction. Great interview Andrew.

Is jonas still with bloodbath? I’ve seen many Live Photos with them lately, but it seems they have a stand in for him on bass?

Mispronounced his name, which is strangely common. It’s Renkse, not Renske. Also, a question about Anders’ absence from touring would have been good. So hard to find information about that, it’s almost like a secret. Katatonia is not just a Jonas solo tour (although it feels like it now and felt like it at the show).

It can’t be Renski when it’s spelt Renkse. Common error, even in print decades ago when they’d misspell it Renske.
