In this conversation and guitar lesson, we discuss Melanie’s development as a musician, her unique style of playing guitar, dynamics and phrasing, her influences, teaching and learning, visualizing the fretboard and getting out of the box, adulthood, self-employment, and balancing social media, business, and creativity. During the lesson segment, she teaches us note by note both the melody and chords of her 25 second original song demo entitled “Fan Art” - she walks us through all of the nuances of her unique phrasing that really bring the melody and chords to life. Throughout the interview and lesson I’ve added our fretLIVE fretboard animations, TAB, and related video and audio clips to help you get the most out of the learning experience.

Nice video! Thank you for having me Gary! I really like the editing and layout. Just a few notes: About the Eric Gales chord, I meant B7#5#9, not Bb7#5#9. Also, the part about how I was just "having fun with my life", I was specifically alluding to the lack of structure/schedule, self-discipline, good time management skills, and personal finance awareness in my life. This was strongly due to my depression/hopelessness. My depression/hopelessness was strongly due to my negative thinking, unstructured diet, and tendency to procrastinate. Vice versa. So I guess I wasn't really having fun at all like I said I was in the video haha The isolation of the corona virus pandemic gave me time to self reflect and create a more positive, structured lifestyle so that I can grow! If I were someone my age who's going through the same thing(s), I would highly recommend researching everything I just mentioned and also talking to a counselor about these things. I am currently reading 'The Power of Now' by Eckhart Tolle and 'Modern Chord Progressions' by Ted Greene. I hope this comment and video has made a positive impact on someone!

Wow! Thank you for sharing! I’m a huge Eckhart Tolle fan and have read Power of Now and listened to the audiobook a few times. The pandemic has definitely given us all an opportunity to grow if we are willing to use it that way and look at it that way. I’m happy to hear that it has had this positive impact for you. Now I want to do a second interview to discuss the topics you just mentioned!!! Thanks again for your generosity of spirit, Melanie. 🎸🙏✌️😁

I’m also a lefty playing righty; to me it’s always felt more comfortable to use my dominant left hand to fret, as I’ve always found that fretting requires more dexterity than picking. Gaetano

Awesome, I’m caught somewhere between a bunch of different influences as well, from learning punk rock at first to ska and reggae like sublime stuff, then got into edm and started making dub step and house lol, then eventually moved away to NorCal and got into folk and blues and bluegrass , then years later trap was on the radio and now I’m like trying to blend guitar playing into beats , then I got into django and Wes and miles , and then dilla, but these days I’ve been playing along with like lil baby tracks and trying to pick up on his rythyms and Melodie’s and motifs . I figures there’s probably not a whole bunch of people doing that either so hopefully it’ll kinda give my guitar playing a style of my own, that doesn’t fit into any of the previous modes I’ve been through. And I think this cycle will continue. Cool to see someone so young and polished technically to have this like wise perspective of these ideas . ❤

that part about not thinking about some box while playing is so true, my mind is constantly changing context depending on chord tone. If anything I'd say I'm thinking in pentatonic almost always and major and minor scales come next. I'd think in notes for a specific mode if I want to highlight that sound but is rare the moments I do it. If anything what I focus now is rhythm and timings and try match with what my ears tell trusting my intuition, the notes choice/boxes are not even a concern because it doesn't take much to free flow on the fretboard, it repeats itself a lot. when all things are put on the table it is the ornaments, phrasing and little nuances that matter. BB King didn't need much theory knowledge to play like he did, he heard it all and replicated the phrasing note for note.

I am not sure who her influences are, but this riff Has a very Zappa-esque feel to it. Add some crazy Bozio playing, drum machine sounding offbeat and slap some of that reverb/echo/chorus on the git and it Cld be something off of Jazz From Hell. Maybe? Anyways, she’s amazing.
