Melanie Faye Guitar Tribute to Jimi Hendrix and Mariah Carey at Summit LA18

Melanie Faye covering Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" and Mariah Carey's "My All" at Summit LA18's Closing Plenary Show.
Melanie Faye
Praised for her “divine guitar skills” by Fader, the Tennessee native melds melodic jazz, rhythmic funk, and soulful R&B into an intoxicating and hypnotic blend that belies her young age. While Hendrix comparisons may be an inevitable rite of passage for any brilliant black guitarist, especially one with a stunning look and throwback style like Faye, her music actually shares more in common with Stevie Wonder, commanding your attention through a tender, understated sophistication rather than any virtuosic display of fireworks. She counts Michael Jackson among her biggest inspirations, and it’s not hard to hear hints of Eric Johnson as her fingers glide across the fretboard, but there’s no denying that Faye is a uniquely modern artist: raised a Jehovah’s Witness by chemist parents, she counts R&B star SZA among her earliest fans, and her first exposure to her instrument came through the Guitar Hero video games. It may be an unconventional origin story, but there’s nothing conventional about Faye, and that’s just the way she likes it.

Hey - I have a stupid question. By tone do you mean the actual sound her guitar is making (like the model of guitar), or is it a technique thing, or is it effects pedals? I come from the drumming world so this kinda doesnt make sense to me. Thanks :)

@@TC-lk2ev for me, I am speaking of the soft "rounded" tone of her picking. Ala Mark Knopfler or any one that plays with out a pick. And for that matter her left hand also has a softness and sensitivity somewhat exceptional. She says in her head she imagines singing and vocal lines. That's a big part of her sound too. IMHO

@Matthew she's using her fingers...gets a more 'weighty' sound. emily remler said she just wanted to be remembered as 'someone with a real big thumb'...the mass of our fingers compared to a pick seems to mean something....also the way she doesn't seem to be rolling off too much off the top with her guitar's tone control...that natural bright sound shines through...plus just a hint of distortion, which isn't there for the lower volumes but happens when she plucks a string harder...i love players like that. tonight show guitarist kevin eubank's solo album 'sundance' really makes use of that phenomena. good reverb, too. and sorry, buddy. RACE HAS ZERO TO DO WITH IT.

But Mariah songs such as 'My All', 'Always Be My Baby', 'Fantasy', 'Honey', 'Heartbreaker', 'Emotions' are so obviously not crap, whatever kind of music you're into. And it doesn't even matter if you like her music or hate it, the point here is talent. Mariah has written the vast majority of her catalogue, making her undeniably talented, period. And you can look up about her vocal range, it's a known fact she has a 5-octave range which is more than any other recording artist in popular music history. She literally holds 2 Guinness World records, this one and the highest note of the human vocal range.

Justin L excuse me sir, that metaphor related to the excelence and uniqueness of such a sensitive artist doesnt seem to have offended the artist environment, according to the messages posted in this entry. Those people have easily captured the meaning and essence of my phrase, meaning that, on the other hand , doesn’t seem to be very complex to understand. Mostly if it is read with open mind and no prejudices. Have a nice day.

Agree. I love the marriage of those jazz chords with classic stuff, very Eric Gales, and the way she slides around and uses those double stops is awesome and reminiscent of Wes. I just have to point out though, you know this is not her channel, right? This is not going directly to her. When people address people like this whose performances are uploaded to other channels just drives me crazy.
