I remember exploring the Cloverfield marketing ARG before seeing the movie in theatre. It all implied that the monster was unleashed by a Japanese company messing around at the bottom of the ocean.

Honestly, the fact that Lane and Paradox got some gentle rewrites to fit into a similar box made for the first Cloverfield sorta kills any shared lore between them. At best, you can say they’re all parallel stories in different universes, sorta like how Twilight Zone or Outer Limits episodes are usually self-contained, but set within an overarching “universe.” Thusly, the Cloverfield movies are self-contained, only connected by references and nods. Also, talking about the whole “fandom might not be accurate” bit drudged up a core memory; I was sucked into the ARG as a young adult, with Cloverfield coming out a couple months before my 20th birthday, and I absolutely remember the whole “Ethan Haas Was Right” gamejacking. Good times lmao

This is incredibly well done! I believe that the interconnected Easter eggs are mostly an afterthought to three completely separate films that were written as stand alone stories never meant to be a part of a larger universe. Abrams company optioned the scripts, filmed the movies and then afterwards added some very loose connections. These were never written as a larger shared universe.

Even if you got JJ Abrams to sit down with you, he couldn't explain everything to you because there _is_ no explanation. His problem with "Mystery Box" stories is that he creates the mystery, but never bothers to create the solution. He doesn't even care about the solution because the "mystery" is supposed to be enough to get people to watch his movies or shows. None of it is prepared, not thought goes into the reasons _why,_ he just throws everything at the wall to see what sticks.

This, pretty much. Also Marvel has made saying "it's a multiverse" and letting fans draw their own conclusions an easy and accepted way to handwave away inconsistencies, so any future movies are probably going to lean even harder on that rather than trying to actually tie everything together in any logical way.

Almost less of a 'franchise' and more like an industry stamp that JJ Abrams puts on all of the science fiction movies he produces through Bad Robot. Everything but the first movie was a spec scrip, though. Meaning it was written independently of that franchise and just given some light re-writes to squeeze it in. Kind of like the middle run of Hellraiser movies like Inferno and Deader. Those were just generic scripts that got branded.

In older style video cameras you sometimes had ro set the date. If you didn't set it or set it wrong the dates may be wronf but it would keep time. So the handheld camera being a month apart is more important than the date. We are so used to our electronics keeping time we forget that years ago it was a VERY big deal to remind peoole to change all their clocks for day light savings time. So maybe they never set the date on the camera

Being dropped off in a plot that feels it’s been taking place and will continue to do so even when the credits roll. The mystery of what took place prior to a plot all the while leaving you wanting to see what would happen in the next chapter.

It seems convoluted because these scripts were written separately and the studio made them be cloverfield movies. All the "sequels" weren't supposed to be. That's been covered by tons of film critics and admitted by the crews of the movies. 10 Cloverfield lane was meant to be a separate movie, and aside from the name has literally nothing to do with cloverfield

I considered that, but it didn’t quite fit. The whistleblower is someone working undercover for Tagruato. Randy is a public facing member of TIDO Wave, with his name on the website. If Randy was the whistleblower, it would be pretty easy for Tagruato to find him out. The idea isn’t impossible, but it felt silly to say Randy was the whistleblower just because he’s the only named character anywhere near that part of the story.

I think Cloverfield Paradox opened up multiple portals One is where the baby alien shot out of and then landed in the ocean on earth in Cloverfield I think at the end of Paradox that’s either the baby alien all grown up and the Cloverfield ship being gone caused a planet of the apes situation where they come back and the alien is fully grown after destroying earth because time passed differently so now it’s bigger Or that’s the aliens mom that came out through that same portal the baby came from and went to earth herself, so they’re seeing mom who is much bigger than the baby Or maybe Paradox opened the portal for the monster and it starts going around hitting Slusho rigs, then the thing that lands in the ocean is aliens there to kill the monster waiting until it hits the right near the city, and either it takes them longer to regroup and we don’t see them attack the monster because the cameraman dies or they intentionally wait so they don’t also have to fight the military, then Lane shows the aftermath of them killing the monster and enslaving humanity Cloverfield Lane is either another universe or it’s just in a different area than Cloverfield 1? So either the aliens pop out of a different portal on the other side of earth from where the alien landed and start invading from the other side and that’s why the aliens are a bigger threat than the monster, or Cloverfield Lane takes place after paradox and Cloverfield 1, we tried beating the monster(s) and failed, so aliens came in and killed them and then enslaved the rest of humanity, maybe the monster(s) left America after destroying New York and got nuked in another country, it’s still fresh news and far away which is why the aliens get to this area first And then I think Overlord if it stayed in the universe would’ve had a post credits scene where a portal opens up and a horde of zombies go through, implying they also go to the earth of Cloverfield 1, and I think it would be cool if they come in after the aliens and take out the aliens, then you have a new Cloverfield zombie movie where groups of humans are fighting zombie Nazis and aliens and maybe a zombie Cloverfield monster pops up at the end of Edit: Also, the reason the baby alien shot into the ocean there is because an “oil rig” hit something, it’s actually an undercover Slusho mine, they get whatever ingredient they need from somewhere deep in the ocean, maybe this is why the alien landed there, whatever they’re mining for Slusho is also a food source for the alien, I don’t think it’s sea weed or whatever, it’s something they need to mine

I wonder if that movie that came out (with Mary Elizabeth Winstead too might I add, maybe she was attached before it became standalone) where a girl could like mentally control a monster ravaging a city (I haven’t seen the movie I think it ended up being metaphorical so I could be so wrong) Maybe that monster was originally Clover and then it became its own thing I say this because of the comic you brought up I had never seen it before What if the girl from Lane came back in a sequel and helped take down the monster while the survivor from Paradox (and any survivors from Overlord if it was apart of the canon) and others come together to defeat the aliens, and the zombies too or save that for another movie lol

Like you can do that with any three movies in the same genre and say "same franchise, different universes". Probably would've worked better if in first movie the seabed nectar was extracted from the monster itself who was still asleep undersea but they woke it up or the satellite falling wakes it up

I don't know if I'm being odd but Tagruato doesn't sound all that Japanese to me but I'm prob mistaken. Kinda like the Yutani in Weyland-Yutani they sound hyper fictitious I mean I connect named from those in Japanese media such as music, games, anime/manga, politics, modern and feudal warfare I just have never seen in my 40 years a Tagruato or Yutani.

I loved Kishin quite a bit. Awesome video was happy i watched this.. like number 888 i loved the popping head in a criminal fashion plus WHO CAN RESIST A TALKING JAPANESE MOOSE! also the clover lice I think mimic real lice as when I think they bite you your blood rushes to the surface I think by some I guess you could call a venom or like a chemical agent they use to feed this is what I've heard at least. I always wondered how baby clover didn't get dropped when you are dropping heavy ass bombs or 155mm shells I've seen overseas what 155mm shell blasts do to a human body I don't think it might one shot one kill clover but a round to the forehead or hell the eye? It would redirect itself back to the sea god forbid they use white phosphorus or flechettes ripping like steel darts.

0:58 dosnt cloverfield fail on no8? I could probably make a case for 9 been a fail too, 6 is open to interpretation aka you say paced out I say drags out. Ied also say that about 80% of the audience have now idea about half of the mysteries/lore of the setting as they don’t have time to search the internet for hidden videos and to ring phone numbers to solve args.

A.R.G. means Augmented Reality Game not Alternate but this is a great video just wanted to pass along the info

It absolutely does not. ARGs and Augmented Reality are two completely different things and are not at all related. This has been one of the most commonly repeated misconceptions since ARGs first became a notable and documented medium. They have absolutely nothing to do with one another beyond containing the word "reality" and beginning with the letter "a". That's literally all.

@BryanTheDM ok buddy, calm down. 👍 the game is playing out like it is happening within our reality, but there are things that only happen within the game, not our reality, therefore augmenting our reality. For a visual version of an ARG, there are things like Pokémon Go. Both types of games use our real world as the setting in our reality but then add things to it, changing or augmenting it.

Monster ? Satellite ? Dammm, I always thought that it was the survivors from the Station or something; as the Cloverfield_Paradox's last scene resembles pretty much what we saw falling into the ocean in Cloverfield_2008; The "Mother" looking for her "baby" also would add up to that (in the last seconds of the last scene). But yeah... Guess I was wrong. Thanks for the video !

Cloverfield was pretty great, but JJ Abrams should never be forgiven for Lost. He should have gone to prison for the way he defrauded audiences with that series.

JJ Abrams was barely involved with Lost after season 1 had ended, and the last episode he officially worked on was as the co-writer of the season 3 premiere.

All right bro let me stop you right here. All movies in the Cloverfield franchised are repurposed scripts. That's why none of them seem to truly fit correctly. But they were other movies that were not Green lit but were given The go-ahead only if they could make them a part of a new Cloverfield franchise. They were all simply just giving the Cloverfield name. But all movies in reality have nothing to do with each other other than a few extra lines thrown into tie them all together.
