It took me about 4 years before i became "good" at goal setting .I think that is another information missing in most goal setting teachings. The truth that just like any other skill, it will take a few years before a person masters the art of goal setting. So stop feeling overwhelmed if you are just starting to practice goal setting, just like any art , it will take time to master.

Discipline and will power are limited. They will run out. You need to tap into what's really driving your decisions, your values. When you do that, you won't need self-discipline and will power to achieve what you want. You'll also enjoy the process of your achievements rather than trying to will yourself to the finish line. Would you rather push through resistance and withhold gratification from yourself just to feel the temporary and fleeting pride of accomplishing a goal or would you rather tap into your natural motivation and enjoy the process of achieving goals so much so that the actual achievement is just as important and joyful as the process? Consider an entire life lived by each of these choices. Which one would you choose?

However, if you're greater desire or vision is based on status, pride, or impressing people you may will or discipline yourself to do things you don't want to do but the payoff in the end will be empty. Will power and discipline or a crutch. Connect with your true values and you won't need that crutch anymore. i think the first “R” in S.M.A.R.T.E.R. should be realistic instead of relatable. most people can’t realistically lose 20 pounds in just a week, so instead if you make your goal more achievable and set it to at first lose 5 pounds in a week, then you’ll have the motivation to keep it up and eventually lose those 20 pounds piece by piece.

@@mariancounsellor I think that 'wrong' goals can be things that are beneficial, yes, but not true to a person's cause. There are cases where people don't know what's right for them, because they don't really know themselves. From experience, I chased the wrong goals because I couldn't accept myself, and what I truly needed. In that scenario, goals didn't align with identity, and much later I learned that was very much true to me.

Goals are meant to be forgotten. I'm not saying that you shouldn't set goals. But you have to keep in mind that goals are only there to give you guidance. You use goals to create your own system of actionable things to do (progress) and forget about the goals. This will help turn you from being goal-orientated to process-orientated.

I partially disagree. Sure, systems are 100% important, but goals are also important for motivation. If you're doing hard work on something and don't know why, you're bound to give up. It's much easier to work on achieving something if you know why you're doing so. But of course, this only really applies for certain goals. Not tiny goals like "clean up my room", but bigger ones such as "be a more hygienic person" or "maintain a house I'm proud of and comfortable in". If your goal is a small one (basically a to-do task), then just turn it into a system.

That goes against what most of the top goal-setting experts say. Your goal should be so big that most people tell you it’s impossible otherwise you’ll most likely give up or not have enough of a ‘Why’ to achieve it. Small goals don’t carry the same level of momentum or power for many people.

Good points... "Praise be to God! Man ever aspires to greater heights and loftier goals. He ever seeks to attain a world surpassing that which he inhabits, and to ascend to a degree above that which he occupies. This love of transcendence is one of the hallmarks of man." ~ Baha'i Faith

Taking control of your life is the *KEY* to happiness and success. We all start somewhere, whether that be at the bottom or with a little help. Ultimately your potential is determined by your habits, which will *DEFINE* Who you are and what mark you leave on earth.

Write your goal, having a look at your written goals everyday forces you to act and helps you to prioritize your actions for the day by asking yourself questions such as “In this moment, is doing what I’m doing bringing me closer to my goals?” I read this from book 😘
