OMG, I've been looking for this forever. I got this tape when I saw Phil Collins live back in the 90's, and I watched it countless times, but then I lost it. I'm SO glad that I found it on KZread. :)

I got to see Phil on this tour in NJ on 6/25/94. The stage was set up like the roof of an urban hotel. On the right side of the stage was a vertical neon sign that spelled out H-O-T-E-L. Across the upper rear of the stage was an elevated subway train that went back and forth and there were roof vents emitting some smoke scattered all over the stage. It was incredibly realistic. Phil ended the show by entering a shack on the roof and reaching out from behind a semi-closed door to pull on a chain that shut off all of the lights on the stage. The 24 song show with two songs for the encore was impressive. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.

I read somewhere a long time ago about Phil putting notes under the band's (Genesis) hotel room doors at night, listing things that weren't tight enough in the last performance. To see him go round with a set of notes for band members e.g Arnold missing a harmony part, was magic. Class.

Phil really knows how to put a band together:). Very organized & does depend on everyone to do it right! He just doesn’t go out there & do a show but has to have everyone working with him:). Believe hs expects the crew to take care of stage, lighting & sound but than he coordinates the music & band to play the wat he needs for back up. A lot of work goes into this as I watch this:). He knows his music & sounds he expects:). Great job Phill back than & now:). I just bought his book in audio:)

I have this on DVD and yes I saw the show from this tour in Sacramento CA in Aug '94 (by myself)… I had seen Phil live 6 times prior in Brand X, Genesis and solo tours. The standout feature of this tour was the opening of the show with a dual drum solo (very fitting for a Phil Collins concert)… and the 'alley' stage set with the 'trashcan drumset' was creative. I'd never seen (the late) Ricky Lawson (from The YellowJackets) play drums before, but I had seen Nathan East on bass with Fourplay a couple of times (I was surprised to not be seeing Chester & Lee as the rhythm section). The drum-trigger wearable suit was genius, and Phil and Ricky played out that opening of the show in such a cool creative way… definitely enjoyed the show… and someone please take me back to at least the beginning of the 90s (mid-80s would be preferable)… lol ;-)

Great video. Thanks for posting it! I saw a similar documentary back in 1989 about Paul McCartney's band preparing for the Flowers In The Dirt tour. Similar thing: lots of excited faces with that "I can't believe I'm part of this" look, dumb jokes, lots of kidding around. But what's clear is it's got to be the most exciting, rewarding experience of any musician's life, this tour that was almost 30 years ago already.

Kelly Howard My lady friend was a DJ at a small campus radio station outside Baltimore. She wanted to get Phil to record station promos. We got to the show 3-4 hours early. It was bitter cold with lots of snow on the ground. To put it diplomatically my friend was “strategically dressed” (tight v-cut sweater) for maximum effect. We saw Phil’s tour manager and she walked up to him and she asked if Phil could record some promos. He immediately said yes and told us to come to the front of the stage about 15-20 minutes before the concert was slated to start. We did that and she got the attention of a roadie, who quick as a bunny had us up on stage and walking back to Phil’s dressing room. Wish I could say I stayed cool but truth is I never said a word in his dressing room, though my friend was cool as a cucumber, complimenting him on his stage outfit and asking if he planned on making any more albums with Brand X. He recorded the promos, I awkwardly extended my hand as we went to leave. He shook it (a bit half-heartedly to be honest) and we were led back out across the stage and hopped down to the seats. Definitely a memory I’ll never forget!

The short answer is over-exposure. In the preceding 10 years, Phil had had either a single in the chart (as a solo act or in a duet with various artists), or touring (as a solo artist or with Genesis) or in the news almost continuously. But there were other reasons. First, in the early 90s, everyone wanted to get rid of what the 80s stood for. That was when techno and grunge music took off. Even I, as a die-hard Genesis fan, wanted to wander away. It was the end of an era in many ways.

Since this tour we've lost Ricky Lawson in 2013 and Andrew Woolfolk in 2022. I'm also sure Phil dedicated the first stop of the tour to Don Myrick, who was wrongfully murdered the year before.

While Phil was working on his "Both Sides" album, he recorded the song "For A Friend", written as a tribute to Don Myrick. It was released as a b-side on his "We Wait and We Wonder" single.

That's correct. In 1994 he toured Europe and North America and in 1995 he toured South Africa, Australia, Japan, South East Asia and South America. His gig in Jakarta took place on 25 March, 1995.

stevedrums Yeah,Phil mentions he wanted a change in the video. It just felt like Chester alone was the change.I mean Daryl was still there,Brad Cole,Harry Kim...I always figured Chester just needed some time off.

Johnnie Torch Chester Thompson (Drummer) and Lee Sklar (Bassist), 3 of the four members of the horn section and 1 less backing singer and a brand new backing singer... replaced the previous band members so a rather big change.
