When Phil was recording and rehearsing for the Motown covers album 'Going Back' in 2010, Chester had some issues with getting some of the drumming down. Phil wanted the songs to be done exactly like the originals, and was being very demanding of Chester about it. Phil was already suffering from nerve damage and had spinal surgery. I think Phil wanted Chester to handle the drumming on the album and subsequent small tour (only 6 shows), but it just wasn't working out. They had a falling out over it.

For drum nerds: Chester with the immortal drumKat (left of kit), a device which today, 30+ years later, is still the most powerful midi drum controller ever manufactured. I'm still using mine (the 3.5 version) and still haven't utilized even a fraction of its potential!!! He's also got a malletKat, which Neil Peart and countless other drummers used - and are still using!

Thanks for mentioning that. I wasn’t sure what that was. I also was not aware Phil still had the Simmons kit mixed with his standard (for Home by the Sea?)

When I saw Robert Plant live after coming out with his first LP after the Zep break up, he had Phil as his drummer. The kit on that stage to this day was untouched for massiveness. Actually outrageously so, because there were so many drums and cymbals that couldn't even be reached. All you saw was the top of his bald head the whole show.

Great video. Three sides live was one of my favorites and in '86 I saw my first drum clinic w/ Chester Thompson. While waiting outside in cold, Michigan weather we heard somebody playing drums. Being mischievous teens we found an open side door and snuck up to the mezinine balcony and got to witness Chester warming up. Sounds silly as I type this, but as a young kid eager to learn everything drums, it was the coolest thing!🤙
