A Christmas Carol - Radio Drama

This is an old adaptation of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". I believe it was done for an old radio show and was later released as a record. I do not know when it was made, who created it, or whether or not it was indeed a radio drama, or if it simply was released as a record. My father had this in his possession for a number of years, and eventually burned it to CD. I have never seen the record it was taken from. I grew up listening to that CD every Christmas. I've uploaded here onto KZread in hopes that other people can enjoy it, as well as hopefully identifying the origins of this version of "A Christmas Carol" (who produced it, who was the voice talent, when was it released, etc.) If anyone has helpful info, please leave it in the comment section below. Thanks. Be sure to Like and Subscribe! Merry Christmas!

It is Paul Scofield as the narrator, Ralph Richardson as Scrooge. A Christmas Carol fan over here 🎄 thanks so much for sharing this 🎅

THANK YOU!!! My family listened to this version every Christmas Eve but we lost the album (an old scratchy awesome album) years ago ... I've looked for it for so long because no other version comes close. The ambiance is so wonderfully unsettling... I've sent this link to my mother and siblings. They won't believe we will get to hear it again. I am terribly grateful & overwhelmed with nostalgia... teary eyed in fact. You are my personal Fezziwig!!! Won-der-ful!!! 🎄

This is a fascinating adaptation. I've never heard it before and don't recognize the voices, but I can hear stereo separation, so it's not as old as Basil Rathbone's 1940s radio performance as Scrooge. This adaptation is more detailed, with fun music/sound effects. I hope someone can identify the recording for you--I'm curious about it too. Thanks for posting it!

Its a 1960 version originally recorded for the Caedmon record label starring Ralph Richardson and Paul Scofield. It's still around in both LP and cassette form and you can pick it up on KZread elsewhere. A good version but a little fast-paced for my liking. The story really needs 90 minutes to play out fully.

Ohh they’ve taken the fabulous music and effects off of this ... you tube has the other full version . The best version , no one can touch Schofield or Richardson The other characters are also beautifully played Scrooge’s nephew’s laugh ! Listened to this every Christmas Eve with my family in the 60s and 70s

This version might very well have been from one of two sources. The first being a 1941 record album, or, less likely, from a Dec. 24, 1949 radio broadcast, based on the record album. Both were done by film star Ronald Colman.

The only problem with the hour-long radio versions is the omission of some things. Not complaining but bring observant…
