When I was a little boy my mother every Christmas used to read A Christmas Carol to my brother, sister and me. She always explained that Scrooge was a mean, hard hearted and selfish man who wouldn't give a penny to anybody. But he eventually became a nice kind man and was generous and kind to everybody.

Scrooge was definitely a rude dude. Sad truth is, so are many who live in fear from neglect and loss. As was Scrooge’s case. Pity them in love, as Scrooge’s nephew pitied Ebenezer.

I once had to wait for a delayed coach from Victoria station. I found a copy of Christmas carol for 50 pence in a charity shop. Snow drifted gently I went to st Paul's cathedral cemetery and began to read. I finished it at the exact time I needed to leave for the coach. I'm a depressed mean character who doesn't like company or family. But there is a touch of light in my soul following that Christmas eve

“Oh,just another reading of A Christmas Carol”, I thought, ready to pass it by. Then, I saw it was being read by Sir Ralph Richardson! I remembered seeing him in Long Day’s Journey Into Night on screen. So, I stopped to listen. And I’m glad that I did!

This amazing reading actually gave me The Olde Christmas spirit. So pleasurable!
Sir Ralph Richardson is a legend. I had no idea he ever did a version of this. Made my day.
This is the man that narrates in the WaterShip Down original too! What a national treasure
I adore this Dickens story! My fave of his and I watch all versions of the movie - though I will say I really like the one with Alastair Sim best.
I love these stories thank you so much for bringing great stories back
Love Sir Richardson’s melodic voice and perfect diction. A superb actor, as well.
Bloody marvelous !! Charles Dickens is my favourite author and this story is one of his best ....I've watched every version of the film adaption and and loved most of the them. I've listened to a few radio recordings, but this one is without a doubt ....the very best, this story can only be read ( in my humble opinion ) by British actors and Sir Ralph Richardson has such a wonderful voice and just brings this story alive ....thank you so much for this !!!

Chrissy Soden have you heard Old Time Radio Show version of A Christmas Carol with Lionel Barrymore? Legendary! It’s among the most loved versions. He did it on a yearly tradition at least 5 times. Each year he got even better! The filename is 1939-12-24_CBS_Campbell_Playhouse_-_A_Christmas_Carol_Lionel_Barrymore and if you like OTR you can find a great OTR Christmas Playlist on the Internet Archive.

A very warm and accurate rendition. Thank you for the fine performance.

Melanie Brandt I love that! So cozy. I also love “A Christmas Story” read by Dick Cavett.
What a treat to come upon this, after a couple weeks listening to KZread presentations about Charles Dickens, purchasing Simon Callow's book, Dickens' Christmas, then interviews with the wonderful Peter Ustinov telling stories about many he knew, including Ralph Richardson risking life and limb on "a powerful motorbike" , holding up filming because his post-crash reconstructive dental work whistled....and after seeing the 1939 version, this appeared, and so here I am, in happy and appreciative company. My best to all here. God bless us, every one. God bless the wonderful Dickens and all who, year after year, bring this to life anew. Thanks so much for posting.
Had to find this on youtube because I cant find my local radio station on my phone and they always play it and I always listen!
Grew up on sir ralph as the finest ever Scrooge and Paul Schofield as a truly magnificent narrator .
How rare and wonderful this is. Thank you.
A Christmas Carol featuring Sir Ralph Richardson. What could be better to listen to on Christmas Day! Thank you for posting this gem; I never knew this existed- wonderful surprise!!!
One of the best readings !❄️🇨🇦
I LOVED him the 1949 film The Heiress! So goooood! What a voice
I can remember this when rebroadcast by the BBC in the 80s?. I have it on tape and then on a CD transcription. It is a classic and so atmospheric and I try to play it every Christmas. Thank you for uploading.

@@anxietymasteryt5791 What are you, some kind of sicko? You say you're twelve years old. Aren't you a little young to be talking such filth? So you're in a sex education class. So what? What does that have to do with this story? What does it have to with anything?
Thank you so much for your time and patience, I’m a bit late , but I could listen to this all day all year long , wonderful you are a star 🌟
This was sir Ralph Richardson's second go at playing Scrooge. He recorded it for Caedmon Records along with Sir Paul Scofield and Fredrick Treves. Also a wonderful recording!

Best radio version.
He would have made a brilliant Scooge with a voice like his haunting and gravel voice. BRILLIANT.
Charming, simply charming!

The message from this will never die as long as people value money above people
⛄God Bless Us Everyone ☃️ 2018 Memphis,tn on Thanksgiving Eve. Ah, the cooking smells !!
I know Ralph Richardson played Dr. Watson on the radio opposite John Gilgud as Sherlock Holmes... but I always remember him as "The Crypt Keeper" in the 1972 Amicus film, "TALES FROM THE CRYPT". "Who's NEXT? Perhaps-- YOU??"

Sir Ralph Richardson was a fine actor and narrator. Great version of this Classic by the greatest story teller! One criticism...A carol at the end would have been more fitting than the music here. Thank you. A Happy and Peaceful Christmas 2020, "God Bless Us....Everyone!" 🎅
Sir Ralph!
Looks like Patrick Stewart! !
Thanks, Roman, for these marvelous Ralph Richardson recordings. Do you have another 39 you haven't posted yet??

Anything Christmas I'm in on iit,it, just I. Love Christmas
They left out the part from Scrooge's "future" where it's revealed that Tiny Tim had died because his father couldn't afford medical treatment for him on the meager salary Scrooge paid him. It's after Scrooge renounces his former ways that he raises Bob Crachcit's income and promises to help him and his family. This is why at the end of the book, it is said that "to Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, he (Scrooge) was a second father" (for some reason, the "who did not die" line is left out of this adaptation of the novel).
This country stil has sirs, lords, kings and queens and lets not forget the dukes. They count on charity as long as it's not from the GOV'T.

Outrageous what they did to Jacob Marley.A man works hard and minds his own business and that is what he gets.Shameful,Marley should have been a bum and then those turd holes on the other side would have liked him.
At 1:43 to 1:47 I know it is childish but did Scrooge let one slip? Lol

This story is partly an encouragement towards warm generosity but also it is an anti-semitic attack on an elderly man suffering from great poverty. Scrooge preferred not to celebrate a festival from a religion which was not his. He got bullied into doing so. It's good that he allowed his employee to celebrate Christmas but not good that he was forced to celebrate it himself.
This story suddenly skips at 1:11. Didn't anyone else notice that? Thumbs down
