    The Roman Gladiator Goddess is my first pick in Smite, Bellona, Roman Goddess of War. I also love playing Tiamat. Cthulhu is from the Lovecraftian Mythos. Smite saw a massive popularity surge when he released.

  • @aidanswiekatun367
    @aidanswiekatun3672 жыл бұрын

    The Egyptian goddess you saw at the beginning is Neith, the goddess of war and weaving, and also wears the crown of lower Egypt. In some myths she is the creator of the world and mother of Ra, the sun God. The Roman gladiatrix-esque goddess is Bellona, the Roman goddess of war. She's kinda like Athena, but not the "equivalent," that's Minerva (don't worry, Athena is in the game). The lady with the katana and floating mirror is Amaterasu, the Japanese goddess of the sun, and the guy she was fighting was Tsukuyomi, the god of the moon, and also her brother and husband. The big tentacle guy is Cthulu, a cosmic God of some sorts created by H.P Lovecraft, there's a whole mythos about the monsters he wrote about. And yes, the game plays very similarly to League of Legends, just from a different camera perspective. There are about 120 Gods in the game right now, most of the really popular ones are in there. Some of my favorites are Chang'e (Chinese goddess of the moon), Neith, Mulan (yes the movie and legend), and Morgan le Fay (the antagonist of the legend of King Arthur, though she wasn't shown in the trailor). If you want to see more gameplay and lore on specific gods, the official Smite KZread channel has Smite God reveals which go more in detail.

    Its crazy I actually started playing this back in the closed beta in 2012! 10 years ago. I don't play it as much today, but it's has a very very very special place in my heart. It's a Moba similar to League. My entire pantheons knowledge comes from this game. I went out of my way to learn all the god lore for the characters I liked and those close to them. That goddess you thought was Isis(renamed to Eset, because you know terrorism) is Neith. That video with Bellona (sword/hammer woman) used to have a really cool soundtrack on it, but their license for it ran out. I actually prefer it a lot more with the old music over it. that same trailer they weren't possessed. In the game there's a big objective called "The Fire Giant" the team that kills it gains an insanely strong buff that gives healing and damage, which why their eyes are red in the big battle part of that cinematic. Oh and the reason Wukong didn't die is because he has an ability that lets him go invisible, jump on a cloud and in his stead he puts a clone. Fun fact Cuthulu is the larges playable character in the game and with his ultimate he becomes even bigger.

    Whoever designed this game has done their homework on mythologies, that's for certain! I've seen a few comments below that cover the various characters, from Sun Wukong to Cthulu (and how to pronounce it 😁), but two stood out to me that don't seem to have been covered. First is the turtle-looking king who got sold the illusionary saké. I don't know of a god like that, but the character is definitely a kappa, a Japanese water demon. Legend goes that they can't survive for long away from their pool, so they keep a small amount of its water in an indentation in their head. They are crafty, and will eat you given the chance, but they can be beaten with simple manners. If you bow to a kappa, he will bow in turn... spilling his water stash and leaving him weakened enough to escape from! The second is Tiamat. Most people who know that name these days know her as a character from Final Fantasy or Dungeons and Dragons. The original Babylonian myth is kinda cool, though, or at least I think so. In the first half of the Babylonian creation myth, Tiamat was a goddess of the sea, who mated with Apsu, god of groundwaters, and from that union the first gods were born. Later, believing that the gods were plotting to overthrow him, Apsu attacks the gods and is slain. Tiamat, taking on an aspect of the primordial chaos of creation, attacks the gods, and also unleashes upon them and their world the many monsters of those mythic cycles, including the first dragons; Tiamat is sometimes pictured as being a great dragon herself. She ends up being slain by the young storm god Marduk, who procedes to make the heavens and the earth from the remains of her body. At least, that's what I can remember 😊 Hoping that was interesting

    Ooo Smite cinematic reaction is such a shock and surprise. One of my favorite MOBAS and the only one I still kind of play. So to identify some gods, first one from the first trailer was of course Thor (or Tor) the nordic god of lightning. The second one was Neith, the weaver of faith. She was an Egyptian goddess of the hunt on the early days of the kingdom. But later generation of Egyptians couldn't identify what she was a good of, and the symbol on her head looked a bit like a weaver. So she become the goddess responsible for weaving the world. Now so is she more associated with the hunt I think. But Smite decided to make her a hunter and use that version of her but have some nods to her weaving goddess stories too. The "Lava Werewolf" as Kent so gently called it is the beast Fenris. A beast from Nordic Mythology, a spawn of Loki and a giant. This mighty wolf could not be chained by normal chains but the dwarfs had to make a special ribbon to hold him. There is a lot of stories involving him and he is the reason Tyr only have one hand. It's also said that at Ragnarök so will Fenris devour Odin, slaying the Alfather. And the forth one is Guan Yu, a well know general from the Chinese story "The Three Kingdoms". Last one from the first bunch did Kent correctly identify as Ymir, a giant (not always frost). From which his body so was the world molted, things like his skull became the sky and his flesh the earth. The "do not fear death" guy is Hades. Then we have Baron Samedi, a vodoo god of death and life and the inspiration to the bad guy from Disney's "The Princess and the Frog." Then we have Bellona a roman goddess of war. The monkey man was Sun Wu Kong. And the dual dagger guy is Loki (Loke). Pretty sure the guy who emerged from the Lava in that trailer is Surtr but he has not been confirmed in the universe so I am unsure. After that so did we have the legend of King Arthur and the Wizard Merlin (which honestly I am not a fan of them in the game). After that so was of course Jörmangandr another child of Loki, thrown into the sea as a child. He grew large until he reached the size to wrap around the world. Just as Fenrir will slay Odin on Ragnarök so is Jörmangandr legend to slay Thor, but not before being bested in combat. Dying from the serpents venom. Followed by Horus and Set. Two of the mightiest Egyptian gods. Olorun is from the Yoruba pantheon, based on traditional African gods and goddesses. His title in game is Ruler of the Heavens. Listing all of these gods and their story is gonna be a bit to much. But let me touch on a few more. The monster with tentacles hanging from his face is Cthulhu. A god from Lovecrafts universe. A being so powerful a mortal would go mad simply looking at him. And only a dead piece of him can make mortals start to worship him. Followed by Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu, the god of the moon and the goddess of the sun in Shinto (Japanese mythology). Wife and husband and of course as in many mythologies brother and sister. They do have a third brother. Susanoo, god of the raging storms. The big turtle is Kuzenbo the king of Kappa's (Japanese turtle monsters who wants to drag your soul out through your butt. I am not joking) and Danzaburou a tanuki. Aka same thing as Tom Nok in Animal Crossing. After that so do we have Tiamat and Gilgamesh, from Babylonian legends. Of course the epics of Gilgamesh is consider the first story. Of course there is so so so so so so much more I could write out. But this is a condensed (?) version of a lot of the trailers. Most of this have I learned by playing and watching smite videos.

    SMITE is a MOBA like League of Legends or DotA, but it's a 3rd person, over the should view rather than top down. I've been playing since the Xbox beta in like 2012. It's come a LOOONG way, with both the game and cinematics. They've got over 100 gods and goddesses and mythological figures, from Thor, Odin, Ymir, to Artemis, Zues, Hades, to King Arthur and Merlin, to Gilgamesh and Tiamat, to Scylla and Charybdis, and they add a new one every few months, usually about 4 per year. They just added Atlas and Shiva, they'll be adding the Jade Emperor and Lancelot soon. Some speculate Robin Hood as well. It's not my favorite game, and it's on unreal engine 3(a very outdate game engine), but it's still fun to come back to when I'm bored with other games and they keep it alive well enough. Athena is in the game, the goddess in the trailer with the sword is Bellona. The bow user is Neith weaver of fate. Isis is in the game, but they renamed her to Eset due to the negative stigma of the name Isis, plus KZread doesn't like people saying Isis.

    Smite is filled with not just Gods, but also legends and monsters that one can play as Neith, the Fateweaver, is an Egyptian goddess Fenrir is one of Loki's children, doomed to devour Odin at Ragnarok Thor is, well, Thor of course lol. The big ice giant dude is Ymir, the progenitor of all giants, who was killed by Odin, Vili, and Ve to create the world. The green guy with the sword-spear is Guan Yu, a legendary Chinese general The creepy dude with the glowing eyes in the hood is Hades, Greek god of the Underworld. The dance number is brought to you by Baron Samedi, a voodoo loa of the dead and rad graveyard parties. Bellona is the sword/shield lady, the Roman goddess of Battle, and currently Smite's poster girl lol That cinematic also depicts a Fire Giant fight (the FG is a big neutral objective that the teams can fight over, whoever kills it gets a BIG damage/mitigation buff for 3 minutes for everyone alive on their team.) Arthurian legends are included, (King Arthur, Merlin, and Morgan Le Fay currently, with Gawain soon to come), as well as Lovecraftian gods like Cthulhu, and recently new pantheons added like the Babylonian god Tiamat and hero Gilgamesh. The game itself is a MOBA, so like League, but better. It's third person view, instead of top down, and it actually requires skill with aiming as ranged basic attacks and many abilities are skillshots. It's got an ongoing story as well, and some really cool battle passes with great skins (my favorite, as an 80's child, was the Transformers one). I stream this on Twitch too if you're interested to learn :P

    Cthulhu is one of the Great Old Ones from H.P. Lovecraft's mythos, which is essentially cosmic horror: unknowable 'gods' that lurk in the outer reaches of space and time, that cause humans to go insane just trying to fathom their basic nature. Cthulhu is like a priest of the Outer Gods, and has been sleeping under the waves for millennia, in the sunken city of R'lyeh, he lays dreaming. Tsukuyomi is the brother of Amaterasu, the Japanese sun goddess, and he is the god of the moon. He wields tonfa named Mangetsu and Shingetsu, after the phases of the moon. Danzaburou is the legendary Tanuki trickster of Japanese legend, and it's particularly hilarious how they did his skin in Smite because in the lore he has extremely large testicles that hang visibly down, so Hi-Rez replaced those with two dangling jugs of sake hanging from his belt LOL

    They do try to design facets of a gods kit around their lore as well which is interesting from design. Odin got a rebalance a few years ago where his passive got added to his ultimate and he received a new passive that gave him a temporary buff whenever a god dies to mark his role in the norse afterlife.

    @@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames theres always been a few design hiccups here and there. An example would by scylla and charyobdis. Monsters from greek mythology where Charyobdis was depicted an a huge whirlpool with a maw of teeth at the centre and scylla as a mob of tentacles (i think) that would grab ships and sailors that ventured near her cliffs. Smite depicted both as little girls which some saw as copies of annie from league (i think thats her name), but their arguement was it was supposed to embody their callous disregard of life and monstrous laughter. They still incorporate monster aspects at least with their ultimate mirroring each other (both turn into monster form, do a massive attack and gets to do it again after if gets kill with it) and charyobdis turning into a whirlpool with teeth during her third ability.

    Cthulhu is a Great Old One from H.P. Lovecraft books. He's jailed in his sleep in sunken city in Pacific Ocean, and his awakening would bring world destruction. As many other eldritch things from Lovecraft, anyone that sees him instantly goes insane, because human mind can't apprehend this creatures, so that's what happening in his trailer. Whole Cthulhu Mythos is largely popular in media, like some gods from WoW and Elder Scrolls take inspiration from it, or Bloodborne, which is literally "Lovecraftian Dark Souls". I would recommend Call of Cthulhu 2018 for gaming introduction, as it kinda new, easy to play and Cthulhu is main god of story

As others have suggested, if you like the look of the characters and would like to know more about them, check the god reveal videos for them, almost all of them have one and there are 120 already, so you got content there if you like them; you could only check the lore section and maybe the abilities as well. I've been playing smite for quite a long time, so I'll let you know of all the stuff I know. The game is a MOBA like League of Legends but it's a Third Person version. All gods have 4 abilities the first 3 are basic abilities and the last is their ultimate, they all also have passives that make them all unique in terms of gameplay. You have Health and Mana, Health is typical how much health you have before you die, Mana is basically your special abilities juice if you have it you can use special abilities. Abilties once used will go into a cooldown time before they can be used again as with most MOBA's so it's key to know when to use certain abilities at the right time. Damage is separated into two types, Magic and Physical and there are 5 archetypes in general. Assassin, Assassin gods are fast melee based gods that deal physical damage they have low defense but their abilities allow them to deal a lot of damage to single units while also applying Crowd Control or CC to weaken or cripple their targets. Hunter, Hunter's are ranged physical units that can attack from a distance, Hunters are used to either weaken or pick off weak fleeing enemies and often have abilities that increases their attack speed or puts various CC on enemies keep in mind though since it's range you have to be very good at aiming and predicting where an enemy might go they are often very Crit heavy. Warrior, Warriors are unique they are melee units that can be played either very tanky or very offensive or a mix of both warriors have abilities to help deal damage primarily. Mage, Mage's are magical dealing ranged units, Mage's have very low defense but very high magical damage. Mages can either be all out damage dealers or support units that can heal and apply various debuff's and CC to enemies. Finally there is the Guardian, Guardians are magic attacking tanks and they are both support and tanking units to help the team by soaking up damage or by using their abilities to apply powerful CC on enemies. Guardians are built to take punishment but those that decide to go offensive with them can make guardians even more dangerous than a mage in terms of damage. The goddess with the Sword is called Bellona she is the Roman Goddess of War she is unique in that she is the only goddess to have 4 weapons tied to her abilities, she has a sword, sword and shield, a hammer, and a bladed whip. If you really want to get to the meat and potatoes of the game I'd watch the gods Reveal there is over a hundred gods but the videos are not super long they're about 5-6 minutes and they also help tell the story of the game more as well as show how the god or goddess works in game. That being said some gods are changed or 'redesigned' to a new form so that other gods can be made. So you might think you're seeing a god twice but in reality it's just an old god remade into a newer one while another god takes the old god's place. This sounds confusing but you'll understand if you see the God Reveal trailers.

    So the god, who's name you could not say was the creation of a pulp horror writer from Maine named H. P. Lovecraft. His Lovecraftian stories would show how small mankind was in the greater plans of the gods of the universe . He who's can not be said, Cthulhu (Kuh-thoo-loo) and not the hardest name to say. I say that knowing that I do not say the name correctly, becouse the first short story about "Call of Cthulhu" was printed in a pulp horror magazine in 1928. We do not talk the same then as now. Smite made a really good name for itself when Arena games got super popular, and they made that name by paying as much attention to PvE as PvP. They also picked a lot of gods that aren't as popular in pop culture like Bellona (the feisty sword chick) so that players could have a big variety of chars to pick through. They also pick characters from modern mythology, like Baron Samedi (the voudon party guy) and C'thulhu (whom is pretty much an anti god,he was created in the early 1900s by HP Lovecraft) and also "ascended" characters like Guan Yu (the green guy with the fancy staff) They do have videos for all the characters, you guys might have them as Friday staple in batches of like 5 or so.

And that's really only scratching the surface of what SMITE has to offer. My interest in mythology is in no small part thanks to this game! If you're interested, there are a number of newer cinematics (from last year onwards) that weren't included in the playlist you were watching. If you liked what you saw here, these other ones might also be worth a shot!

    Sword lady is belona and she basically is roman Athena 😅. She doesn't have a Greek equivalent. But she is the wife of Mars. And her personality is very much like Athena. The more tactical side of war.

    The one you thought was Athena is actually Bellona. She is the Roman God of War, but she is not Athena's Roman form. The Romans change Athena to Minerva. The one you thought was Isis is actual Neith, a much older and stronger Egyptian goddess of fate. That said, both Athena and Isis (now called Eset because KZread demonitization) are in the game.

    I have to say, I LOVE smite and have played it for a long time, but one area LOL has them beat by a long shot is their cinematics. Not in quality, SMITE's are great, but in quantity. SMITE could do SO MUCH MORE with cinematic trailers. Not only just showing off their characters and how they'd interact (like, say, "A New Dawn" from League), but also their own lore (like "Awaken" from League). I think a lot of non-SMITE players aren't even aware that there's meta-lore within the SMITE "universe" that would be really interesting to show in a longer videos. And yes, I know a number of recent god teasers (Cthulhu, Tsukuyomi, etc) have had some lore involved, but those are often

    As a previous player of League of Legends since 2013, I got into SMITE in...2019? 2020? My at the time girlfriend's husband wanted me to play, and I was hooked. Then...the next year, a new god was announced, and I was beyond excited! Discordia!!! Goddess of Chaos, usually spoken of as Eris in the Greek pantheon I have honoured Eris as my Goddess before all others since I was 16 or 17. Not only was I able to play as my deity, BUT...she turned out to be my best character!!! I want to hear the exact reasons that the Xtian deities haven't got included at all. I have few match ups that I would love to play out.

    Cthulhu is the deep one, it's not a mythological god, but a fictional one created by author H.P Lovecraft back in the 1920s that's become a cornerstone of media and inspired a massive legacy of works that all reference and play with the themes H.P put in his works. Cosmic horror, unknowable deities, the insignificance of man, amoral continuity (the idea that not everything can be examined as good or evil, which mainstream Jude-Christianity at the time was pushing into almost every piece of fiction) etc. Works like Alien (Prometheus especially), Bloodborne, the cosmic backstory of WoW, the cosmic beings in League of Legends like Aurelion Sol are highly inspired by the idea that "God" is unknowable and uncaring, a higher cosmic power that only suffers us because we are irrelevant. It's one of those fictional progressions that if you don't know about it beforehand, you would never see that it was significant because everything that came after it refined what it was going for. Like if you were to watch the OG Star Wars trilogy today for the first time, it doesn't seem that special, it's just the heroes journey, but in space. At the time though it was groundbreaking for its special effects work and simplified approach to world building. Cthulhu is just basically the idea of a God older and greater than God himself which is why it became such a relevant idea in the 1920s

The girl with the shield and the sword her name is bellona and the girl with the bow her name is neith. I enjoy playing as Hel and I just like her so much. She is the daughter of Loki and she has a second half of her. Anyways love the reaction c:

    The story of Persephone and Hades is complicated, as there are a lot of different versions. But in this one she isn't a victim of Hades at all. In some stories of the greek gods and the underworld, Hades is actually one of the better gods. A much better person then Zeus ever is. Zeus, Persephone's father, helps Hades kidnap her after he promises her to his brother, but Persephone's mother, Demeter, didn't like that and appealed to Zeus to get her daughter back. Zeus, told Demeter and Hades that Persephone would spend one half of the year with her mother, and the second half with Hades, her husband whom she actually loved. Also, in some of the older stories about her, she is referred to as Queen of the Underworld before Hades was even mentioned at all as the ruler of the underworld. It is actually thought by some that Hades was made up to take the place of Persephone, who was the original ruler of the underworld.

    Yeah, you had it fairly nailed down for the most part. SMITE is a MOBA style game in the same general spirit as stuff like League of Legends, only with all the playable characters being gods and heroes from mythologies the world over. A few of them (like Arthur and Merlin for example) aren't explicitly GODS, but they are myths in their own right. I used to play a TON of Smite, I've sampled a few MOBAs and generally enjoyed myself overall but I think Smite is my favorite one. It stands out a bit too as the first of its kind I believe to have gone with a tighter third-person over-the-shoulder style interface as opposed to the isometric top-down of most MOBAs before it. I've always loved mythology (particularly Greek, though it's all cool IMO) so getting to step into the roles of some of my favorite gods and goddesses was a lot of fun for me. A few noteworthy mentions to pick out: 1 - The "Athena" type character with the dark hair and the large sword who showed up a few times was Bellona, the Roman goddess of war. There are some similarities between her and Minerva (the Romanized version of Athena) but Bellona seems to be more of an Ares type, a legit incarnation of war (while Athena/Minerva is largely more related to wisdom and strategy). I'm pretty sure the Latin WORD for "war" is based on her name. It may interest you to know that Athena and Ares themselves are also both playable characters in the game. :) 2 - C'thulhu not being a name you recognized was a little shocking, as he's one of the more well-known "contemporary" deific entities. He's kind of a standout in Smite as he's one of the few characters who's NOT from ancient myths or history, but rather the subject of a pretty well-known author H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft is kind of the father of "cosmic horror" as a genre, inspiring a LOT of things to come after. Possessing a similar kind of clout as authors like Tolkien, his supernatural horror stories revolve around grand cosmic entities from the Beyond that have either touched on or rooted in the Earth, beings so immensely beyond our limited ability to conceptualize that they're known for causing madness in those who've glimpsed the eldritch secrets they guard. C'thulhu in particular is known to be a sort of high priest of one of the greater entities, and he lays slumbering beneath the oceans with only his dreams occasionally spreading to the mainland to infect the minds of humans and cause them to go insane. 3 - Not a big deal, but the shadowy character talking about death and Ragnarok and all that in one of the early cinematics was Hades (albeit their oldest representation of him, he got a bit of a rework later). I can see how he'd be a little hard to identify and easy to misinterpret as Loki though, seeing as we don't associate Hades with Ragnarok...but I guess since they were kind of having all mythologies overlap it kinda makes sense that they'd relate. Some other comments have suggested checking out the God Reveals for the game, which is certainly an option if you guys have a decent timeslot available, but there are QUITE a few (over a hundred) and they're largely just an introduction to the way the character looks and plays in the game with a bit of lore thrown in. If it happened to be something that piqued your interest, I know for sure I'D watch those videos, but I can imagine y'all have a lot of other stuff on your list to get to before that would come along. :)

    So the god reveals are kind of like the spotlights for Dbd and gameplay trailers for League? 🤔 we were hoping they’d be more cinematic. And we definitely won’t be able to get to all of them in one vid haha. Hades threw us because of the Ragnarok thing for sure 🤗

  • @ericmartin8870

    @ericmartin8870

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Closer to the League versions, DBD can be a little shallow on how much info they give on the abilities and lore. Smite's God Reveals are a couple minutes each, starts with a little lore narration and then goes into the abilities and some in-game scenarios of how to utilize them or show their weaknesses. They're neat, but not groundbreaking. Good for getting a taste for who they are and what they do. :) The intro lore talks are usually pretty cool at least, they tend to do kind of a scrolling 2D art crawl not HUGELY unlike stuff like the art-oriented WoW shorts (Burdens of Shaohao etc) but in the game's own signature art style. Very dramatic, lol...but neat. :) It's a dive for sure if you want to plunge into all that Smite has to offer about its characters, but if it tickles your fancy it's pretty neat. I always thought it was cool.
