A Brush With The Tenderloin | Truly CA Season 8
ww2.kqed.org/trulyca/a-brush-w...
The act of painting a mural naturally draws onlookers. In the Emmy Award winning A BRUSH WITH THE TENDERLOIN, Caron gets to know a host of memorable characters during the course of the Tenderloin project. Fortunately, Caron's murals constitute true "public art," intentionally engaging residents in a dialogue about their neighborhood. Dozens of locals, like homeless rocker "Indian Joe," kite-maker Jeff Marshall, and former heroin addict Lisa Demb, become integral to the finished piece, which shows the Tenderloin as it was, is, and could be.

What a beautiful story. I lived in the T.L. back in the late nineties and have to say you have captured the spirit of the T.L. in your mural. The people are the life line of the T.L. Yes there are some bad people there. But for the must part the people there have big hearts and just want to be loved. Thank you for your work...

It's kind of odd to see the old St. Anthony building. It's been torn down and a brand new building with senior housing in its place.

Putting murals in the Tenderloin is like putting perfume on a pig. The people in this neighborhood need a serious economic shot in the arm more than they need art. The person in the beginning of this video said so herself, and if an artist like her can see that, why can't the people who make the laws that affect the Tenderloin residents? The powers-that-be should be more concerned with revitalizing the community by giving companies incentives to come in, set up shop and create jobs so people can get their dignity and self-respect back instead of living on the streets surrounded by crime, trash and filth. It's a common sense solution to a serious problem that has plagued this district since God knows when. Murals are all fine and dandy, but the economy needs to be higher up on the priority list.

When a business moves into the area (in this case Tech) they will certainly not want to employ those in the area. Instead they will seek younger candidates with coding skills.
