Twitter's Neighbor, the Tenderloin, Resists an Upgrade - KQED Newsroom

Special correspondent Spencer Michels explores whether change is coming to the gritty Tenderloin, home to some of San Francisco's most down and out. As tech companies like Twitter move into the nearby Mid-Market corridor and encroach on the neighborhood, Tenderloin Housing Clinic executive director Randy Shaw says its unique housing stock prevents gentrification. "Cool Gray City of Love" author Gary Kamiya goes further, suggesting in his book that the city and non-profits headquartered in the Tenderloin have a stake in keeping it the way it is.

The bay is ringed with BART and Caltrain stations with nothing above them, just big flat parking lots at ground level. instead of dense, car-free high rises above each station for subsidized and market rate housing. That's how you absorb, contain and distribute demand/cost/price/traffic. And that unloads price and traffic pressures on homes further away for people who actually need backyards and 4 bedrooms.

There is an element of segregation to the tenderloin, but not to the extent the republican media might want to believe. The author, Gary Kamiya was right, the non profits are part of the solution, and part of the problem. But what is an even bigger part of the problem is what the zoning policies of the entire west side of San Francisco, is doing to the housing supply. I admire the nonprofit owner, Shaw, because he is part of the solution of the housing crisis for which the zoning policies of the entire bay area are partly to blame. However the idea that the police are turning a blind eye to crime here, just serves to place the blame on someone. The video showed the policeman, who said that San Francisco doesn't criminalize homelessness. He said that if you're not used to seeing people who smell, who talk to themselves, or are poor, then you may not realize that homelessness isn't a crime here. But the police aren't turning a blind eye to crime. They have street patrols, for goodness sake. And they agree that the police and communities need to build better relationships, which is a fact that police departments too often ignore. If you don't think the police are doing enough here, then you don't know San Francisco police. They are some of the most hard working, least biased police you've ever met. I urge you to meet an SF cop, or just say hi. You will learn a lot.

People like you are a huge part of the problem. I love that you are a living Christian who cares about the betterment of their fellow man, but giving these people money instead of things like clothing and food is what keeps them on the street begging. You are funding their sleazy drug and alcohol soaked existence. Give an your prayers and good advice instead of money and non judgement. I know we shouldn't judge people but we shouldn't enable them to live in sin either.

Theres also a lot of decent people in this area. The problem goes beyond San Francisco, to gov Jerry Brown allowing inmates to go home early due to prison over crowding. That directly impacts areas like the tenderloin. San Francisco is becoming like NYC, where there are no native people who's family has lived there for generations. They kicked the native families out of Hell's Kitchen, Lower East Side, and many parts of Brooklyn, all to make way for the privileged few, who are lucky enough to have wealthy parents who can give them a boost in life.

Poverty and despair are profit centers in most cities. Just as with drugs, which is a profit center for law enforcement and for the organizations that make money from the drugs because of their illegality, homelessness is a source of public and private financing and will become more so in the future.

Basically wha teary CammYa says is : get the poor and those who support them out ("somewhere else") so that the the tenderloin could benefit from the Silicon Valley young and rich residents who embellish the houses and makes rents skyrocket with no consideration to the working poor in this town !!!…… I'sorry but I'm a French Tourist who has been travelling and staying in SF every other year or so since 1970, and let me tell you last time I was there I decided it would be final : SF has become a city of wealthy urbanites who imported a petty bourgeois selfish suburbanite culture in th e city making it a tourist attraction only and a city of geeks and bobos who have nothing to give but their business plans and marketing dream of making the world free through the iPhone … No interest in that. The Tenderloin should remain as it is.

Why are you so ungrateful towards those wonderful individuals making SF so hip and gritty? Dankady Bong in that case the employers offer more money till someone accepts the offer. Now due to increased wages, cost of living goes up for the residents of the area. This continues till the residents make enough money that they can afford the area. Look at San Francisco, the blue collar worker cannot live within at least 1 hour of their place of work. But they still commute because the pay is high. This has caused an samdwich to cost $10 and coffee costs $5. But that costs is still ok for residents on the area because they make enough money.

Liberal response to not being able to afford to live in a city: create massive government bureaucracies to interfere with the free market, confiscate people's money, transfer that money to other people, all the while keeping an area next to some of the most expensive, most desirable real estate in the world, dangerous and disgusting. Conservative response to not being able to afford to live in a city: move!
