A Brief Trip Through the OG Monster Hunter

Ойындар

It's easy to give the first Monster Hunter a miss since its sequels are more of the same, but much more polished. However, sometimes going back to a series' roots can let you appreciate what makes it good in the first place. It's not for everyone, but the first Monster Hunter entry might be less of a shock to the system than you think if you've been keeping up with this series of games for a long time already, and there's some fun to be had here if you're willing to endure its rough edges.

If you're interested in playing the older games online either with an emulated copy or a physical PS2, you can check out the MH Oldschool forums: mholdschool.com/, which has guides to access the private server.

I didn’t expect to see you making a video essay, but honestly it’s great! I’m glad you’re regularly uploading now. I can’t believe it’s been like 10 years since I first watched your DS1 videos! And again, great video.

The money problems definitely sound like something that would bother me since I love making armor and weapons, but I appreciate a lot of aspects that I’ve seen footage of in this game and I would love to see its kind of pacing be revisited someday. I actually think a modern remake (graphically, not mechanically) that expands the size of the maps while doubling down on the survival elements of the game would be very interesting. I love how distinct each monster feels as a fight, whereas in new games a lot of these monsters are just bumps in the road because we have much easier ways to fight them. And wow, the backgrounds in some of the maps are excellent, I wish we kept loading screen zones honestly, it makes the maps feel so much bigger. You did a seriously great job on the script of this video by the way!

as a kid, I could NEVER beat the Yian Garuga. Even as an adult I haven't even bothered to try. Also I remember watching your videos on DS1, glad to see you're still around. :)

For anyone interested , a lot of the game and its economy/reward system /roster is balanced around playing the game online and solo at the same time . With a tri style hrp gate but no limitation on what quest you can join (beside hr/lao/fatalis) , the entire online is based around helping each other no matter the progression skill level and it makes gaining money (and hrp) very organic as well as less tedious as doing only this solo . There are unoficial servers that exist but you're gonna need a japanese copy to play it tho (it works on real hardware and you can patch the game with a full english patch) , really recomend it .

Great vid. I remember seeing a long vid on Dos a few years ago with similar discussions around the resource management and dilberation of everything feeling part of the experience. I think it's good to consider the early titles, middle titles and 5th gen all somewhat separate experiences built on a similar foundation of hunting monsters. There's definitely a point where the management aspects could be considered tedius to someone familiar with world or rise and you can definitely make the argument that these things not being preserved is them "trimming the fat", but i think it's good to keep them as a time capsule of the early era and to not write off that monster hunter was much more about monster "hunting" rather than just monster "slaying".

Yeah, I think despite how iterative this series has been Capcom's actually done a fairly good job of making each generation feel pretty distinct from each other in regards to how they feel to play and the sort of features and atmosphere they offer.

Just so people know, you should not play the NA or EU copies of the game for now. The JP version of the game can be played online again and has an english patch, as well you can transfer you're save from MH1JP to MHG to continue playing and access G Rank. Having access to online drastically changes the games progression.

I followed this game's development in magazines, bought it when it came out, and played it for hundreds of hours before the servers shut down. The atmosphere, setting, and rhythm still feel special to me. The offline village felt prehistoric, and the online city had Barter Town vibes. The series has improved the combat and gear systems in a lot of ways, but over-streamlining has the newer games feeling less like a world you live in, more like a combat arena. MH1 would be hard for me to go back to now, because so many of my fond memories come from online play. Plugging a keyboard into my PS2 and chatting with strangers, taking turns picking quests with a party, distracting a Rathalos so your buddy can get that egg to the next screen etc. It was a mindblowing experience in 2004. Also, I've never seen an online community that friendly since.

I can share that kind of sentiment in regards to online when it comes to MHFU and 4U. 5th gen's drop-in online is really convenient but there's not much of a sense of community nowadays and it's harder to get a turns room going out of the blue unless you're just playing with people you know already.

@@Emarrel MH1's online mode is really something special. 8-player hubs (10-player in MHG and MH2), an entirely separate town dedicated to online play, the best tavern for socializing, upgradeable housing, a rotating inventory for the market... it's easily my favorite online experience in any Monster Hunter game.

Nice video. I've been really curious about old monhuns as an idiot that only started with World and tends not to emulate much. Even just in the change to Rise, so many things I appreciated in World (like the world HH) were lost. I *do* have the kind of disposition you talk about, so I'm sure one day I'll try some classic entries.

I think if you wanna go back and check out an old title, Freedom Unite might be your best bet. Since it's the last gen 2 game it's pretty much the definitive entry of that generation and since it was a portable title, the hub is already available offline without having to tinker with things. It's still got that subdued atmosphere and includes all the maps from gen 1, but has the little conveniences that have become staples of the series and won't routinely kick you in the shins (as hard).

To me, the gen1 games always felt like a super-difficulty romhack of a theoretical monhun game that doesn't exist. Everything from the paltry quest payouts, to the relentless small monster spam, to those terrible egg quests felt so precisely-tuned to be the most bullshit malicious version of what they could be that it became unironically hilarious.

I honestly like the original PS2 game more than TRI on the wii though, I know people swear that's the best one all the time but I can't get over how terrible the controls are.
