    The FXR frame was designed by a Harley Davidson engineer named Erik Buell. And. That is why the frame is so stiff, and so well regarded for its handling.

  • @getoffmygrass6974

    Not really, the frame was already in place. He helped make it handle better and produce less vibrations as HD wasn’t ready to throw balancers in their engines yet. FWIW, I’m a huge EB fan, even bought his bikes.

    @@getoffmygrass6974 I've also owned a couple of Buells. But I'm sure EB is not solely responsible for the FXR design. I suspect ex-Norton engineer John Favill played a role too, as the FLT and FXR essentially develop rubber mounting themes from the Norton Commando. The FXR frame may be stiff, but then mounting the swinging arm from a rubber mounted engine turns out to be a non trivial handicap for FXRs (and also for Buell tubers). On the plus side, the rubber mounts allow riders to make full use of all available engine revs (and thence also power) without suffering from the full potential effects of engine vibrations. Most FXRs will stand up to such thrashing quite well - early Buells tended to suffer from breakages of things like engine mounts because these had been designed to weight as little as possible.

    Here's my comment on the sad, poor history of the FXR: bought a brand new FXRT in 1990; rode it 43,000 miles; upgraded the performance a bit with pipes, carb kit, air cleaner, and several different cams; after seven years and 43,000 miles I was ready for a new bike; traded it in, bought a new bike, ride and rode it". Oh what a sad poor history.

    I liked the stability of the FXD Dyna SuperGlide but that comes at a price of very limited ground clearance. The 1999 (and later?) FXDXs were a better compromise. (My personal view was than the '99s had better stock suspension that the '00s, even though the latter came with more user adjustments.)

    So, what would you say was the best year for the fxr?

  • @derekp2674

    @derekp2674

    Жыл бұрын

    I guess the most recent ones, from around 1993 or 1994, would have come from the factory with the best developed/debugged original equipment. But that is so long ago now, that most well used FXRs will probably have been overhauled and upgraded down the years anyway. I owned a 1987 FXRS-SP and then a 1990 FXRT. The former suffered a horrible transmission failure at one point while the latter never suffered any major breakdowns due to H-D parts failing.

    @@derekp2674 I was more asking because in the video Shadetree says that the later they got in model years, the more the marketing team took over and made them worse and worse. Wasn't sure if a late shovel or an early Evo would be best if I was looking to purchase one

  • @derekp2674

    @derekp2674

    Жыл бұрын

    @@vinniemadrox He did say that but did not really explain what he meant by it. Here in the UK, a wide range of different FXRs were sold. Shovel engined ones are relatively rare, so most of my experience is based on Evo engined models. Taking the 1993 model year for example, I think the "full dresser" FXRT and FXRD touring models and the FXRP police model had been discontinued by then so the range then comprised: The FXR Superglide - base model with a low ride height and rather ugly speedo housing on tank. The FXLR custom - a really great looking cruiser with a low ride height. The Red bike in the video roughly mimics an FXLR. The FXRS - a different cruiser with a low ride height. The FXRS-SP - the sports model with a high ride height. The FXRS-CONV - an FXRS-SP with detachable screen and saddlebags. I think the higher ride height models give improved ground clearance at the expense of high speed stability (because longer front forks will flex more). For UK riding conditions, many of us liked to upgrade the front forms with improved springs and dampers and replace the rear shocks with our favourite aftermarket brand (Hagons in my case). Brakes also tended to get upgraded too. When it came out, the FXR was lauded as the best handling H-D ever (but don't H-D marketing say that each time they bring out a new model. My experience is that properly set up Evo Sportsters and Dynas will both out handle FXRs but... Sportsters are rather cramped relative to any big twin Dynas are heavier than FXRs. So, even today, FXRs can be a good compromise choice.

    Definitely grab the newest one you can find. If it was me I’d got from anything from 90 and up so you can get the splined shaft transmission instead the tapered shaft. If you want the “correct” shock location try to find either a Police model or a Touring model. Any of the ones that were lowered from the factory can be fixed by different shocks without a problem though.

    So true but the FXRS-CONV is '"convertible" because the windscreen and saddlebags are quickly detachable, in contrast to other early 1990s H-D touring models.

    Love Shovelheads, really dont like the FXR. The short primary just looks completely wrong. For me it’s like a tall elegant woman versus a woman built like a brick shithouse. Especially since they are equal fun, the ‘normal’ style shovelhead frame has excellent handling too. And yes we have plenty of curvy roads here in Switzerland, its not like I ride my normal framed shovels on straight roads.

    I had a 1982 FXRS 1340cc, 5 speed rubber mounted motor.. Bought it and a 1982 FLH brand new. Rode it around for a while, fast, but I couldn't stand it. Everytime I rode it, felt like and looked like an oversized Sportster.. It felt like I was riding my wife's bike.. Sold it, kept riding my FLH.. It's a Way better bike, hands down..
