FXR is the Big Twin Harley Sportster

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The FXR is an absolute Harley legend that was just way ahead of its time. FXR was the narrowness of the Sportster but with a larger rigid frame that rubber mounted the engine and the bike just flat handled. Not everyone fits on a Sportster and the FXR was the ticket to a sporty Harley with a big twin Evolution engine that had some suspension. FXR's are highly sought after today and many will argue they were and still are the best handling Harley ever.

I have been riding since 1975. Have owned 10-12 bikes at a time most of my adult life. Currently own two dozen, have sold two dozen in the last 3 years as of last week. I live close to Skyline Drive just North of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I don't own any "sport" crotch rocket bikes. I prefer the standard seating position but have warmed up to cruisers with slightly forward foot pegs. I value good handling on twisty mountain roads. The FXR at 1:55 looks a lot like my 1st gen Kawasaki VN750 which I love for its handling. I have always wanted to own a Harley. I have ridden a few of them at Harley dealer events and at Rider Rally and Honda Hoot events near Knoxville. I love the sound of a Harley Evo engine over any other V-Twin cruiser. I am apologetically stating that I have never ridden a Harley at a Rally where it was better handling than another brand ridden immediately before or after it. I was searching "best handling Harley" and this video got right to the point claiming that the FXR IS IT. I'm ready to try/buy a Harley this year if I can find one to handle as well as my VN750 or SV800. Eager to hear from the community, maybe 2024 will be the year!

I own a bone-stock '82 FXR, a bone-stock '91 FXRS-Conv, and a "flat track" built '91 FXRS-Conv. I've had Sportsters, Dyna's and a Road King, and by far the FXR is the most enjoyable and predictable frame. When they first came out, indeed with the "V" in the frame, there were comments about looking too much like Japanese cruisers. Indeed a Virago or Magna would come to mind, but when they put the Nova leftovers on it, the D & T (& P) models rocked! I'll probably get aftermarket bags and a fairing as NOS are just way too expensive. The Shovelhead brakes (10" rotors) and 35mm forks keep you honest, driving like a madman isn't recommended. But the Evo models got it right.

This is the hot rod of the Big Twins. You do need to do some mods to the motor and tweak the suspension to really step into that role however though. Thats what the bike was in the movie Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man, a modified FXR, with a raked wide glide front end, S & S carb, etc. Looked pretty xool, but a little too much rake for the corners though, and rode way too rough with the struts, etc. But I like the older bikes like this over the newer ones they have a timeless, classic look.

Early 90s ,my cousin had a FXR with a shovel. Believe it was a 1984. At the time I had a’75 iron head sporty ridged that I beat the hell out of. Traded bikes for a couple of hours and both were about to do a straight up trade between us. In the end, was glad I kept my sporty. When it rarely broke down,I could fix it on the side of the road. Points ignition was a bit of a problem,so I put a magneto from a John Deere model B on it ,that I had to machine down with a grinder and drill, but ran flawlessly for 3-4 years until I got wrecked in ‘96.

I wish I still had my 93 FXR, but that skinny front tire was not the best for grooves. I slimmed down my FLSTF by getting rid of the floorboards, and the twin pipes. It far out handles my old FXR. The bigger front tire ignores the grooves, the lower center of gravity loves the corners, and the only thing I drag in the corners is part of my kickstand. The FXR was a great ride, but I would never trade it for my 02 Fatboy!

My Dyna is an 11 FXDC which has Progressive 444`s and springs in the forks. Recently it got a new set of Michelin Commander III`s. The thing that really helped it handle better was when I raised the forks in the triple clamps by 7/16". You wouldn`t think that small amount would make such a big difference, but it did. I don`t know how it would compare to a FXR, but it`s sure a lot better than it used to be. It`s actually becoming a half way decent bike, and I ride every morning for an hour or two.

The XR750 was really just the motor from Harley, Harley contracted with highly experienced and qualified frame builders with extensive experience in flat track like Cheney. The FXR was one of the few bikes that rolled straight out of the factory built in house that handled.

I don’t buy the idea that FXR frames were to expensive to build, because the FL frames from that era were very similar. Engine and tranny mounts were identical and interchangeable. The FXR was just not selling because all the old school riders thought it looked to Japanese. So here comes the dynas that reminds us of the FX frames from the 70’s early 80’s. Today the FXR is in high demand because now we know it’s a much better bike than the dyna.

I have owned mine for about 5 years. I found one for sale in Florida on internet and bought it over the phone. It was in perfect condition with 995 miles. It is a beast. A lot of people bought them when they first came out and immediately sold them. The gearing is not what people expected. I love it. The problem is that if you are causing at 80-85 mph. Are speed limits are 70mph on most highways. My XR's rpm is around 5000. A regular Harley is under 3000...I've been told. So the XR running high. So some people hated it. I have been riding sportbikes and supermotos for 40 years. The XR is different. It has power everywhere. From like 75 to 115 it rips your arms out and trying to go from 4th to 5th is hard because it pulls so much. I need a fairing. The prices have gone up. I have seen one's with low miles and in good condition over $10,000. The funny thing is a XR was at a Harley dealership near me. It was in ok shape. They wanted $10,000. It sat for months and months. It went down to $8000. I told the salesman. I told him nobody is going to buy this bike here. You need to put this bike online. People all over the country are looking for this specific bike. The XR wouldn't be my first choice for riding up there. But here it is a great bike because all our roads are straight and sea-level. Since we live on a giant swamp we have a series of canals so the roads go north to south, east to west. Hardly a curve to be found. I do some runs around Lake Okeechobee so I can open it up. No traffic and no cops. They have some Indian cops around. The good thing is that I have Palm Beach International Raceway a few miles away and they do trackdays all year long. Homestead is about 2 hours. My 11 year old son races miniGP. The boss let's me suit up and take out one of the supermoto fleet bikes he rents out. He tosses me out there with the 450s. Hahaha. I am usually on a 125. I never get to do a trackday because all my money goes to my son's BMX racing. He came in 5th in the USA at the Grand Nationals in Tulsa in his class. He moved up in age and to expert and finished 8th in Florida after a bad crash and tough time in the finals. He still finished in the top ten and will get invited to the Race of Champions in Tulsa. We travel 2 to 3 weekends to state and national races for about 7 months. Needless to say I don't have the time or money. Sean Dylan Kelly, Brandon Paasch and Lucas Silva all race out of sfminiGP. Sean coach's the kids. Brandon is from NJ but he comes down to Florida during the winters. Micheal Correa the guy that runs sfminiGP has he son racing. I thing he is 13? He was racing his Ohvale in the Junior Cup in Motoamerica. He won the amateur class on a Ninja 400 in FMRRA. Sean is training him. His name is Juju Correa. At this point for most normal people the FXR is too old and too expensive. You can buy a more sound better running Harley for less money. I've built a couple Evo choppers and ride a 13 Streetglide now, i do all my own work on the Streetglide as well so i'm more mechanicly inclined then the average person and i'd pass on a FXR just because your going to be doing serious motor work and basicly going through the entire bike and if you find one that really been worked on and ready to rock it's going to be really expensive. I like Evos and i like my 103 Twin Cam too. Back in the day there was posters that said See No Evo Hear No Evo so people laughing and turning up their nose up and now 30 years later some more fools turning up their nose at a Twin Cam saying Man FXR Evo the greatest bike ever, you were just saying 30 years ago it was trash. Whatever. I like all Harleys but i think its important to keep it real. For the most part the newer Harleys are smoother and more sound then older ones it might fluxuate a little bit from year to year. The best bikes to buy will always be ones like 5 years old, still new but more affordable definently not 30 year old bikes. If your a good wrench and obsessed about a certain model then knock yourself out, it's still going to cost you a lot of money and your stupid ass will be pushing it down the side of the road, i've been there many times and guess what it wasnt with my 13 Streetglide. Evo motor is not as good as a Twin Cam. It's made better then a Shovel but compared to a Twin Cam it's just not as good. Ride accross country on an Evo Vs a kept up Twin Cam. The new Harleys are like Harleys from the future, Huge cooling fins, oil coolers and just made and designed better. FXR is also tiny, i like the FXR but the snobery of the FXR is amazing is just in these assholes heads like the jerks saying See No Evo Hear No Evo when the Evo was just a better made harley motor at the time. Evo motor would start up and run and not burn oil. Thats all it was which was more then older designs could do. Well Twin Cams run and dont burn oil but there smoother and just made better. Lightweight pistons and the list goes on and on. If they never discontinued the FXR it would have its following but lets not make it out to be more then it is. One more food for thought a 98 Buell S1 will run circles around any FXR at the track. The were racing them in the big twin class back then against Ductati 748's and winning. Old Buells you can find cheap but again your going to be doing some serious work at some point because of how old it is, i'd buy an old Buell S1 over an FXR anyday but its not worth it to me for the same reasons of age. For a collectors bike yeah thats different and same for the FXR but thats all they are at this point, me? I wanna ride.
