Starting next to Geneva, then going West to Clermont-Ferrand to join my father in law (this will be his first road trip at 57yo) then we go south to Sète, then west to Carcassonne, then we start to go north to Aurillac en finally Clermont-Ferrand to drop him at his home and the last bit to Geneva to come back to my place. 5 great days to come !

350 meteor all the way. I just had a brand new one in fireball yellow delivered this week. Only £3,150 on the road brand new. Current deals are amazing. I have a street triple 675 from 2012 and the Meteor is so much fun plus a lot better turning circle.

Yeah, I did wonder about that too. I don't know what the roads are like where the potential owner lives or how deep his pockets are. The Meteor will use literally half the fuel and is a far better bet on bad roads, urban riding and gravel. Also, if he's not maintenance orientated the Meteor will come with its 3 year guarantee.

Freddie, I had a Svartpilen 401. The issue is that the bike has an identity crisis. You can't go touring or cruising on it because the seat is uncomfortable after 30 minutes and the fuel tank only held 10 litres. You could take it on the dirt roads but it wasn't great there either. Its one of those bikes that you buy to commute into the city and look cool on but anything more than that you're better off with something else.

Just got back from a small ride on one. I will go for a 660 xtx cause I love single cylinders. I found the svart 401 fun, but the gears were so short that to ride it like it’s meant to be you have to only use it between 5 and 7 thousands rpm. Unlike the xtx 660 that have longer gears and are more enjoyable in my opinion.

Freddy, hello from Adelaide Australia. Regarding the Benelli Tre-k. I bought one brand new and loved it. It was faultless over the 15000kms I put on her over two years. The buying experience was great also. This was the beginning of the Chinese ownership in 2014 and the importer was still establishing dealership networks in all states. This meant that I took advantage of the unique way these bikes were being able to get test driven if your state did not have a dealership yet. They flew me out and collected me from the airport, got a tour of the unique bikes on offer including Bimota and confederate. Went for a spirited ride and then lunch. No pressure to buy then dropped me back to the airport. I of course bought one and loved it. I loved it's uniqueness, engine, handling and great styling. Parts obviously may be an issue, has anyone thought of buying a second one (even damaged) to keep as a spares bike. I know I have done it twice with other brands as I like unique bikes and know that parts are scarce for some brands. Love the channel, great work.

A recent comment claimed the Classic 650 is slated for launch at Diwali, which is the beginning of November. They also said it will use the same frame as the Super Meteor and Shotgun. Given the demographic profile of Royal Enfield buyers in the UK, it's a reasonable guess that people are waiting to see what a bigger Classic will look like before deciding which model to go for.

The Super Meteor is a cracking looking bike. Unfortunately, the suspension has insufficient travel and makes it uncomfortable and on our potholed UK roads occasionally very painful. Not for me. I have a bad back already. I noticed the small Meteor had similar jackhammer rear suspension

  • @GaryShellberg

    @GaryShellberg

I agree that the rear suspension is rather harsh. A riding buddy of mine put YSS shocks on the rear of his Super Meteor and it made a very nice improvement in the ride quality, so much so that he is considering revalving the front forks now. He purchased the YSS shocks from Baxter Cycle ( a Royal Enfield and Triumph dealer ) in Marne, Iowa USA . They have them made to their specs by a YSS distributer.

The Norton 961 commando seems a good buy. Top spec rolling chassis, top QC and the price even at a bit more than any triumph twin is not a big worry. Its so beautiful, great handling, fit and finish and the great excitement you get riding commandos make it one of the nicest twins ive ever ridden even after a 740cc yamaha XS2 with a big bore kit. That was a fun bike but handled like a shopping trolley. An old mate rephazes the cranks and bores out yamaha XS650s and he is a guru on it but by the time you spend out tuning one, the 961 will just go up in value i believe and once the word gets out on the new owners care for QC and customers being very impressed, there will be big demand and a shortage of new commandos. The reviews are very positive.

Old things aren't valuable simply because they're old, but because age generally equals rarity (especially when it comes to bikes). As more and more of them are lost to collisions, fires, floods, rust, etc. they become more valuable by default, the question is, to what degree? I suppose it's all determined by the demand for a certain kind of bike versus the available supply. Some bikes are equally rare simply because not many of them were made in the first place.

Hi Freddie, I had an Interceptor 120th anniversary special edition waiting for me to buy at my local dealership, however I was still waiting btibget my licence back after injury so I decided not to take it and the dealership sold it to another customer. I got my licence back a few months after but it was too late to get that bike but I wanted another Interceptor. I ended up getting a 411 Himalayan and really lived that bike but still hanketed after the Interceptor. I'm currently without any bike but keen for something else. I'm thinking about waiting for the next iteration of RE releases because bthere has been rumours about an Interceptor vascrambler which sounds excellent. I live in Western Australia so we can ride all year round, in fact summer is a bit to warm for riding, spring and Autumn are ideal, even Winter here is really good for riding although a little wet. Your episode this week brought back memories of my poor decision in passing bup the Special Edition Interceptor but buying a bike when I couldn't ride it would have been torture so the time wasn't right and I'll have to learn to live with that decision.

Rare, special edition models often do go up in value but ONLY if you don’t use them. Same goes for almost any vehicle. If you want to actually make money on vehicles you have to buy at the bottom of the market then hold them until all the good ones have been ground into the dirt.

G’day Freddie. Most interesting conversation about values. I have both RE interceptor & G.T.Continental 120 Anniversary models, numbered 57 of 60 & 58 of 60 here in Australia. I paid $14,500 for the Continental & $ 13,500 for the interceptor. I have added the yss front & rear suspension upgrade to both bikes. Apparently these bikes aren’t worth anything in Australia as I have been offered a miserable $ 7,000 each for them. They both have done 1,300km’s & look like have never been sat on. All i want is somewhere near what they owe me, however at the very low prices offered it looks like I will just keep them & start riding them without worrying about keeping the km’s low. If anyone in Australia wants one, these are available at any reasonable price. Shiny side up mate. Hooroo 🏍😁

The trouble with a bike that was only on the market for a couple of years will be obtaining spares in a few years. Harley did something similar with the Buel models and the Street 750 water cooled models.

One that may surprise you Freddie. A 1999 Honda VFR800fi. The last of the geared cams on a VFR. I bought mine for £1100 during Covid, in between lockdowns. Slightly harder to find the one I have as it is the beautiful (well I like it), yellow livery as opposed to the more common red ones. Seeing them go regularly now for circa £3,000 in the UK. So there are some surprises out there. While I’m not looking to sell mine, I can’t see the value doing anything but increasing. So not only are the special editions worth a punt, a bike with engineering or even design features which are not so commonplace now, such as geared cams in my case, are also worth keeping an eye out for.

I owned the Vitpilen 701 and sold it last month. It’s a marmite bike in my view. I couldn’t get on with it after 2 years of ownership. I changed the suspension to a Nitron shock and Andreani cartridges in the fork in the hope of making it work for me, but the lumpy engine and discomfort just didn’t click. It’s just too focused. Ive bought an Aprilia 660 Tuono factory to replace it, which is everything I’d hoped the Husqvarna would be and will be riding it to Spain in May - something I wouldn’t have done had I kept it.

Age has a lot to do with it. I bought a new 1976 Yamaha RD400C for $1,150.00 and traded it in 1985 for a Yamaha FZ600 at $600.00. I thought that was good value for the number of years i rode it. Today an RD400 in good shape is worth up to $8,000. In its 5 year run there were probably 40,000 bikes made. Wish i'd have kept that one. It was fun to ride, considered to be a landmark motorcycle and finally appreciated in value over the years.

Yes I would be interested in a bike like the Benelli . I own a Moto Guzzi 1200 sport which had about the same ratings . With a little bit of knowledge and help from owners groups etc its not as bigger problem as it first may seem. What you do get is a rare bike from a company that has a lot of history, and a ride full of character and grin factor. Due to the fact that you have done a bit of tinkering you you are more at one with your bike as well.

The limited edition phenomenon is interesting Freddy; some look like cynical profiteering whilst others are aimed not at the bike rider market but rather wealthy collectors .. and some of these “limited” editions are far from that.. 🙈 So I went with a 5Four edition Honda CB1100RS, #11 of only 54, and only sold in U.K., modified by one builder Guy Willison aka ‘Skid’ … new they cost a 5k premium at time through Honda but hold solid value at 13500 and very few come up for sale, very rare, underrated. I can only think values will creep up. But few will come up for sale.

And whenever I actually made it to my destination without it breaking down, man, that felt like a major win. If I'd started out with some shiny new bike, all boring and predictable, I reckon I wouldn't even be riding now.

The problem with Honda's are that they tend to be too refined, almost too good. They can lack character and joy but as a commuter bike they're probably great. I rode a nearly new Honda 600, 4 cylinder bike for a few miles and kept stalling the thing because there was virtually no feed back from the ultra smooth engine. It was so bland. I then jumped on a high mileage half knackered Suzuki 600 Twin and loved it! Huge fun.

Hondas are not necessarily bullet proof. My first bike was a used VFR 800 and it developed a fault where the FI light would come on from time to time, accompanied by a reduction in power. The Honda dealer where I bought it tried to fix it and concluded it probably had a wiring harness fault. So I traded it in with that dealer for a used Blackbird. In 2015 I bought a 2012 Honda 125 Innova as a local run-around fun bike. I was the second owner and for about 4 years it ran fine, then started misfiring. I diagnosed a faulty fuel injector, bought a used one for £25 of eBay, and fitted it. It's run just fine ever since and is a great little bike. It keeps my 2023 Speedmaster Chrome company in the garage.

A Moto Guzzi v7 over the Bonnie all day mate. Italian finesse and can do long trips easy. The Enfield is a tacky toy for weekend riding. Like a monkey bike. 😂

Back in 1970, I had a 1957 Norton ES2, (a 500 single), which I think I paid about 15 quid for…. If only I had hung on to that bike for 50 odd years, 2 marriages and about 30 house moves, ,,, I could potentially have been sitting on over £3,000 today! 🤑😧

the steve mcqueen triumph is really a joke, so it hasn't been worth collecting...the best profit I have ever made was from a nice RD350.

Why was the the Svartpilen a flop??? Well the fact it rhymes with "fart" and contains the word "pile" might not have helped...

HUsqavarna now released a 801 with the KTM 790cc engine. I would say I would not want a massive thumper engine especially from the likes of KTM with their electrics and reliability. I had an XT660 which is another big single thumper engine and it was fun but very very tourquey to ride. I much prefer Paralell or V twins.

Limited editions are, to put a word on it, naff. Every damned bike is “limited” by the amount of people wanting to buy it/the amount that can be produced. It’s a bike, a vehicle, paying extra for some stickers, paint and the ‘experience’ of feeling special is…well, not for me. I like bikes, I don’t collect ornaments.

Just because something is a special or limited edition absolutely does not grantee that a bike or anything is actually gonna be a truly "special" machine that's not just a cool color scheme and decals. No a "real" special/limited edition imho must be unmistakable beyond just paint schemes and offer something more or different. Not all editions are made equal and the ones that really aren't that special reflect in their value.

Hay mate thanks 🙏 for the shout out on the Benelli 1130 Trek . They also have a triple engine, if I didn’t say beforehand. Extremely comfortable seat and as I said unbelievable handling and brakes , actually I even “ wiped the floor against a Aprilla RSV4 1000 , Yamaha MT10 and KTM 1290 Superduke. 👍😂, this was about 6 years ago when I was a bit younger and crazy 😜. Was asked by the other 3 riders that the traction control must work really well “ my reply was DOESN’T have any 😂, then they said good thing for ABS , my reply was does have any “😂👍. As I said a weapon of a bike let down by some reliability issues and excess fuel ⛽️ consumption ( around 10 lt per 100km ) apparently the Chinese are Buliding the 1130 triple engine again - Benelli Chineses but it looks like they have put the engine in a Touring bike , looks like a BMW RT 1200 .

The Svartpilen 701 production was stopped with the introduction op Euro 5 emission standard. Probably not successful enough to make the engine emission compliant.

In reality, bikes are never going to be a good financial investment. Even if a bike increases significantly in value, once you factor in the cost of ownership each year there's not going to be any real profit. Of course, there will be a few exceptions to this, but not many!

Steve McQueen Triumph? Could the issue be an historical American Actors name on British bike? How much Triumph/McQueen fandom crossover is there really? Sure they exist. But for a old bike to have value, it has to be rare in comparison to the people that want it. You need more buyers than bikes to buy to push the value up. If the market is tiny, a bike could still be rare, an still have more bikes than buyers. That makes the price drop. So the investment value calculation had to be two sided. The bike needs to be rare. But it also has to be different in a way that would appeal to a large market, not a small one. You want something that really stands out an sold, but not quite well enough to be made more than a year or two. Or something exotic looking with an artificially low production run. These are still bad investments though. If you are very lucky an double your money in 7 years, you broke even with the s&p 500 average. Invest in actual, proven investments, an buy the bikes you want to ride the wheels off of.
