A BOKEH Monster. I couldn't believe it on the Leica M10 & GFX | TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25 Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I'm not going to lie, I didn't have high expectations for the TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25 for Leica M, but was legitimately blown away, enough so that it's the first lens from a Chinese manufacturer that has earned a permanent spot in my camera bag.

    Hey Benj, just wanna say I really enjoy your videos and your equipment reviews. I just purchased my first Leica after years of lusting after them. I got a M240 to start me down my M journey. Thanks to your videos I ordered the TTartisans 50 1.4 and i think this 90 1.25 will be my next purchase. Thanks for the amazing content and reviews.

    I can't thank you enough for sharing your opinion and results with the GFX system. I'm planning to try it on X system (because I'm not that lucky to have some GFX camera... for now), and I think it will be a very good pick, too ! Very much appreciated, and very much impressed by the quality of the moments you capture at these weddings : you're great at what you do !

    Awesome lens. I’ve been thinking about purchasing this. One thing you mentioned is that it needs an adapter to fit the gfx. Well to my knowledge TTArtisan makes this lens for the GFX mount, so this would eliminate any dark edges while still using the full sensor

    Thank you for this review, Ben. I like your videos. I am a big fan of some of the TTartisan and 7Artisans lenses. I own a M8 and M240, the 75mm f/1.25 7Artisans renders amazingly on the M240, save for some sharpness on apertures larger than f/2.0, but I don't mind it honestly. I am so glad to see a good review on this TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25. One thing I did notice is the busy background which doesn't render well on people and busy foliage, for example at 12:17 the lady with blonde hair, her left eye looks like it has ghosting/double eyes. I don't do weddings, but I do a lot of portraits and street photography, I am still going to order this lens and test it out for my purposes.

    Thank you for this interesting, well done video. I was very happy to see you discussing adapting this lens to the GFX. As a note, one downside of using the 35mm mode on the GFX is that it will bake that format into your raw file -- i.e., you can't recrop out of that in post. As a result, I now stick with the full medium format resolution even when shooting with 35mm format lens that vignette knowing that I can address the vignetting through cropping (and to some extent the vignetting tool) in post and will usually end up with a larger than 35mm format image size.

    Watched this again and some thoughts started to surface.. it's super impressive that these Chinese companies are releasing lenses like this at such price points. It makes me wonder though how their lineup will progress. It kind of seems right now they're hunting for 'fastest and cheapest Leica-look' lens offerings, with varying results (like you mentioned, the 75 vs. the 90). Will they start differentiating between classic look lenses, modern look lenses, fast big lenses, small compact lenses, premium vs. budget (although, where do you go from a lens like this, which can compete with premium lenses already at such a low price?).. with lens naming schemes to make it easier for customers to know what they're getting? (similar to Voigtlander and Leica). I have a feeling we may be approaching a point where these lenses might get more expensive, to make space for cheaper/slower lens options. This might be the perfect time to pick up a lens like this before they start to get marketing/product managers involved.

    You have to distinguish optical image circle and mount vignetting that is often a smaller circle than the first one. In this case the noticed strong vignetting comes from the little leica mount used for medium format. This same lens has no vignetting in native hasselblad medium format X mount on my medium format Hasselblad cameras with the same optical image cercle.

    Agree Benj, it does look "legitimately comical". Other adjectives might be preposterous, absurd, unwieldy, and wholly impractical. It's as ungainly as the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM(onster) on a mirrorless body. If TT Artisans made it with an L-mount, it might actually balance and be usable on the Leica SL2 with its awesome EVF and IBIS. TT Artisans has brought to market other lenses that are the antithesis of stealth shooting and portability...key reasons why people use the Leica M system. I. Just. Don't. Get. It.

My question is, does the mount difference affect quality at all? Essentially asking if I should still buy the M mount or just go for the native RF mount. It's a bad idea adapting this Leica M mount lens on medium format with the strong vignetting that comes only from the Leica bayonet size. The same lens exists also in native medium format mounts with no vignetting. I use the Hasselblad X version of this lens with no noticeable vignetting even at full aperture.

    FUJI GF 80/1.7 - is better and use AF ;-) Manual LENS is pain, work only on high ISO or light, when you use flash, then you need stand, change ISO, focus, get back and take photo ;-)) - i know it, it work very bad, only on natutal light it is relative OK. What happened with original lens? - i use real view, GFX automatically temporary switch ISO, focus and you can shoot from hand. Byu manual focis is only 2 scenario: 1) not exist similar lens 2) Price For example, i sell shift (work perfectly on GFX) MIR 35/2.8 (funny lens), Schneider 28/2.8 - both good, but too much pain - i replace it with 20-35/4 What i like 35/1.4 (i wait for similar lens from fuji) and 135/1.8 (both sigma art with AF adapter) and old minolta 58/1.2 - funny and good lens, is cheap maybe i byu 135/2 or 2.8 (reason - weight compare to sigma art with AF adapter) - but only becuase is possible buy it about 60 euro

    Why using Leica in the first place ?

  • @Jupiter4Alphs
    @Jupiter4Alphs2 жыл бұрын

    Looks a lot like a fat R Leica R lens on the outside, like the 80mm Summilux R, especially if you have that one adapted with a Metabones R to FE mount adapter for instance that uses the R styling. It really looks like a fake Leica lens from China that just doesn't have Leica anywere on It. Nothing really wrong with that, Leica lenses look good. On a GFX It would be more like an 85 because you lose corners. But if the corners are nothing complex, just using the clone stamp in PS would be very easy. Optically, they probably get beat by a ton of lenses, having the optical problems of 50 year old lenses. And some 50 year old lenses are even better. But options are good, and these Chinese brands are wasting no time. A cheap 90mm 1.25 is cool, It's a one trick pony. A lighter and better 90mm f2 or 2.8 being much more usefull, I find the Contax G 90mm f 2.8 sonnar already having to much bokeh wide open sometimes. A 100mm lens like the Carl Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar f2 has even more shallow depth of field. And the Summilux 80mm 1.4, doesn't just supersmooth background, It melts them. f 1.25 would be cool in lowlight, but shooting a heavy lens hand held is very hard to shoot hand held, especcially with smaller body's like an Leica M, Bessa R, A7 or A7II. Probably easier to handle on a Panasonic or Leica SL, Canon R3 and the fat Nikon. Can't speak for a gripped Sony A1, not having one. I don't have any of the Chinese lenses. But Laowa seems to make lenses of much higher optical quality. The 35mm 0.95 seems like a very good lens. Except being very heavy and Voigtlander making their VM 35mm 1.2 III to 330gr or something making It passable for a walk around lens on the heavier side. Suriu also seems to make excellent tripods on par with Manfrotto, not Gitzo but the last one being extremely durable but also very expensive. I'm rooting more for those Chinese companies that make affordable but very high/good quality, then the one's giving cheap OK quality. And also rooting for Voigtlander and Zeiss, the first one releasing some insane lenses the new VM 50mm 1.0, VM 35 1.2 III, the APO's, also having most of their range available for FE mount. And Zeiss stil heaving some excellent M mount lenses and also Loxia, Batis, the Zeiss/Sony. For Fuji GFX, covering the sensor is not the same as giving good or stellar performance, the 100mm Zeiss Makro Planar f2, covers the sensor, on FF one of the best lenses but on the GFX It doesn't do It's magic. Why buy a GFX and put cheap bad Chinese lenses on It. I hope Zeiss or Voightlander also make some glass for It.

    Hey thanks for the detailed comment! I mostly agree with a lot of your sentiment, I'd just say that the idea of putting on cheaper lenses on something like a GFX is more for the "look" than for performance. If you want performance, just buy the native Fujifilm G glass as it's fantastic.
