My Final lens selections!

Well this was a journey! Selecting just the right lenses for me (not saying these would be right for you) was a fun experience. Paired with the incredible Leica M11, these round out my perfect kit.

What you don't mention, but visibly demonstrate, is the peace of mind of just settling into a system that you don't doubt and can build a solid relationship with for years. I guess it's like choosing someone and getting married. So much clutter goes out the window and frees you up to be your best. That said, I'm not married, but have been with my kit for a long time.

I can't thank you enough for such a great explanation of your choices. As I shoot less and less studio work, I'm rethinking my entire SL and M kits (i.e., simplifying and reconfiguring lens choices). You drove home some important things to consider. Thanks again!

Nice set and almost close to mine. I'm still on the M-P240, great camera for a press photographer. The Summilux 50 is a must for me. It's simply the best of all Leica M-lenses in my POV. The Summit 2.5/90 is perfect for portraits and candid snaps. I recently bought a second hand Elmar-M 3.8/24, a tiny little beast for landscape and tight spaces. I've a Q as a back up and video camera. Keep on rolling!

Excellent presentation! We like the same 50mm; I was “Summiluxed” into adding the Leica M system, by a pre-owned Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, that I tried on pre-owned and demonstrator M9 and M Type 240 cameras, at Houston Camera Exchange, in Texas, in early 2018. The visual signature of this lens continues to remind me that there is no better 50mm M-mount lens, for me to photograph people. I may still be sorting-out my favorite wide-angle and short telephoto M-mount favorites.

28, 50 and 90 sounds like the dream setup. I don't have a Leica, but on my Sony I always carry a 24GM and a 90G 2.8 macro. I have a 50 1.8 but I don't like it (it's pretty bad compared to the 24GM and 90G). I recently got a analog camera (Olympus) and I love it. It came with a 21mm and 28mm lens and I've been using both a ton. I love how compact all the lenses are. I can bring two cameras (B&W & Color, or two different lenses) and some lenses and still have space in my bag. Shooting analog made me completely uninterested in modern high-speed autofocus. I've learned to manual focus on moving subjects by muscle memory. Using my high-end digital camera feels almost boring. It has been reduced to a very expensive film scanner hah

I am a hobbyist photographer, mostly environmental protraiture and street photography. I purchased a M8 when they were released and built a small three lens collection of 50 Noctilux (V1), 28mm/2.0 and a 75/1.4. After a few years I sold the V1 Noctilux as the hit rate was too low for me on the M8. I added a 34/2.0 Gen IV ‘Bokeh King” and a 50/1.4 lux and sold the M8 and the 28/2.0 and purchased a MP-240. Decided to trade the MP-240 and the 35/2.0 for a new Leica Q (2) and I’m over the moon. Whether it’s placebo or not there is something very special about Leica photography. Thank you for sharing your current kit! Enjoy

21 mm 3.4, 35 mm 2, 90 mm F4 is what I travel with and also have a 50mm F1.4 APO also. Love these lens, love my M11. Love seeing people banging out there’s big canons and lens and am so happy to have such a low profile higher quality setup. Absolutely love your setup and agree about the 90 mm that’s a great lens, although I wish the lens hood had a cap and it was easy to collapse the lens with the hood on, however agree it’s an absolute gem. Go leica they’re the best.

I feel the same way about my Pentax Spotmatic that I purchased in 1971 which I still use. No CLA's necessary. I do like the look of Summicrons and have an M6 but I still prefer my old Pentax and the build quality of their lenses. However, the film camera that I have actually carried the most often is Olympus XA rangefinder. I still have not found a mirrorless I really like and have tried a Sony A7 and Leica M9.

I shoot fuji’s but with leica glass: 28 summicron and the 50 summilux. I rented an M11 and was surprised how much I geeked out at the experience. Problem is that I live at 1600-12000 iso, and the M11 had this color noise compared to the fuji. Also I need the evf plus the flash shoe, so the fuji/leica lens combo works. Plus its a fast system, no lag. If I could spare the change… since I already have the glass, I’d get an m11 limited edition when they are out. One caution, though: your grandson will never use your m11 like a grandson does today with an m3 or M6 because of digital rot. Now the NEW m6…. Thats an heirloom!

Thank you! I am using the same set of lenses for traveling, very versatile and compact! Just recently I exchanged 2.8/28 with 2.0/28 which is similar in size and adds more options in low light / indoor conditions. Despite the 90 and 28 option most photos are taken with Summi 50. If I have to take just 1 lens I feel most comfortable with the Apo Cron 35 which bridges 28 and 50. Great that Leica offers these unique options.

I am talking about the situation when I have only 1 lens with me for certain reasons. Then you have to decide or to "compromise" whatever lens you choose. Besides, I have no issues with compromises or better to say: universal lenses that delivers such great pictures as the Apo 35 does.

Your choice is sublime and as a non pro I have had to pair it back a bit. Previously you sounded quite keen on the Voig. 40mm 1.2. I love this on my Nikon Z6 because I go slip into DX mode and then get a 60 @ F1.8. Foes that seem reasonable? My other light carry kit is a Nikon 28 F2 Z + Voigtlander 75mm F1.5 which again I can use in DX. And sometimes I include a Nikon 50. Keep up the amazing work you are an inspiration.

I went with the 50 apo for my first lens and it has limitations even though the buttery rendering will keep me from selling it. Ha, that one hurt my pocket. But, after a year I am going to try the new 1.4 35mm especially for restaurant work. Hopefully it won't be too tight for groups of people in low light (that 50 sure is) Gosh, that 1.4 "artsy" look is the one people really want it seems from me. The metal and heft in the lenses are growing on me in a way I did not expect. I'm interested to see your 90mm video. I borrowed a loaner in the 90mm f2 from Leica and could not get a dang thin in focus truly haha. Great video!

Is it just me or does the Voigtlander and Zeiss lenses feel more solidly built than Leica lenses? All my Leica lenses have some play at the end of the aperture range and I feel they are too lose especially on my 35 Lux FLE. I actually use the 40mm Cron-C as my daily for the size and speed. The FLE is too big and bulky and I’m considering selling it in the future and get the new 35 Lux steel rim because as an enthusiast, I value size and weight over sharpness.

But the funny thing is (as much as people like to say it’s a rich man’s camera) I just priced out gear for someone looking to get into “pro photography” with a canon system and it was a few hundred off. As far as the Fuji with voigtlander lense - I think it’s an amazing setup. I use them on the X-Pro 3 and love them. I would suggest the M lenses with an adapter. The Voigtlander lenses made for Fuji are a bit underwhelming.

You can tell time with a cheap quartz watch more accurately than a good mechanical watch but better still the American Railroad pocket watches of the 1890’s-1930’s are such a pleasure to tell you the time. Hi. How are you sir ? I really wanted to buy a Leica M11 but in the end I changed my mind and went to the Leica M10-R Black Paint. Do you think I made a good choice? I don't know. I felt that the M 11 departed from the legacy and Heritage of M Rangefinder ?! I am pleased with your comment.

I was actually going to go the M10-R route myself. I love that sensor. For me the only reason I chose the M11 over the M10-R is because of the internal memory. I needed the backup because I use it 100% for paid jobs. If I didn’t mentally require backup, I too would have went with you on this. So no, I think you made a great choice.

Anything else like IBIS and etc are extras that it can or can't have. With any other lens brand I’ll loose 30% + of the value the day after the purchase. Obviously the bodies are another case, but the gear works for me and I as a professional photographer appreciate what goes into its manufacturing and how it helps me create the images I capture with it. I tell you what, as much as I love my M11, and the lenses I have. My M10-R was stolen at the beginning of the summer and I miss the color profile and so much more about that piece. Going back to your statement, at least in some regard, that there's a lot to be had in the historic significance of a piece, & in this case functional art in and of itself. and the M10-R certainly invoked more of a historic connection to the unit. As much as I love the functionality of the M11, it is truly the perfect combination of 'quick to access' functionality & in the practice of shooting in any regard it lends itself to your ability to quickly change settings in order to properly capture a shot/ moment in a given situation. That said, I miss the processes and the very thought provoking habits that the integration of my M10-R had on my shooting experience, giving me a more integrated process with my photographic tool/s. Again, I certainly preferred the color profile of the M10-R over the M11. I think I'm going to have to get a new one in black paint.. Big dreams yea? But I wouldn't trade the M11 for anything because of what I'm able to do with it wile retaining all that it does as the successor in the M series lineup.

I am sorry to say this, but when I compare the build quality of my older Leitz lenses with a couple of the new ones that I have, the build quality of the newer ones is inferior. The feel of the mechanics of lens is different, the newer ones are not as precise as the older 60 year old ones. I can say with 100% certainty that even Leica have made some savings somewhere. Thank you for inspiration, I have the same feeling about affordable tools. Sorry for a silly question, what lens would you take to a zoo?

Well on a mainstream mirrorless I would use a 70-200. With a Leica I would use the Voigtlander 90mm
