idk if people comment intimate stuff around here but im gonna comment what i feel. Whenever these people for example Joe, Corey, Matt, or Willem or any creatives i follow on insta, posts new content or like this a new video it makes me less sad about what's happening on the world or like the reality outside, it's amazing how some people can really turn up your mood by just watching them like create stuff- im not saying this to like grab some attention or stuff but idk, it might look small or like sound lame but people who u admire can really turn ur mood around, idk if they know this but yeah im just gonna leave this comment here. Thanks for making me smile and like making life less scary for 12 minutes, it means a lot for me and/ or to some people. Stay safe Matt.

A few decades a go while working in Atlanta I used an AOL dial-up connection and printed off some Mapquest directions thinking I’d drive over to KEH and have a look around. After all I’d been seeing their ads in ShutterBug and other magazines for what seemed like forever. I had no idea they were not a retail location and pretty sure I caught them by surprise when I showed up. I vaguely remember it was like I was in someone’s living room and not a camera shop as I had envisioned. Even though I was disappointed, they couldn’t have been nicer. Still a happy customer to this day.

Fast Leica glass above the 50mm was not meant to be used full speed unless your subject was beyond 5 meters, and this particular Canadian Cron was for studio work with its sweet spot at f4,5 and sitting on a tripod. Too heavy to go around the streets with it and too demanding as far as DoF was concerned. I replaced mine 30 yrs ago with an Elmarit. As for the HP5 you are right about it, but try an Agfapan 25 in Rodinal and print glossy and people would think your picture was taken with a Hasselblad.

Hey, that's my go-to 35mm portrait setup right there ;-) Including the HP-5+. I also use it on my digital M262, and I can say it's really sharp. I find it records a whole lot of fine detail which I can easily emphasize by adding sharpening in Lightroom. More so than on most other glass. Love the 90/2 (non-apo) and it's pretty cheap to boot!

For once I have to disagree with you Matt. I think 90mm is *totally* your focal length! Or at least one of them. The shots you chose were beautiful - perhaps unusually graphical/geometric compared to your wider angle work and I love it. Of course, it is unusual for you but it seems to have pushed you to look at the world in a more Gibson/Leiter way and you did so superbly. Much awe, much respect.

This is a great lens, especially for the price. It's worth mentioning that this version is the "pre-asph" which came out in the 80s and ran until 1998. It has great bokeh and background compression. It is a little heavy, but nothing too crazy. If you are looking for a 90mm and cant afford the APO, this is probably your best bet. Great video!

I am happy for the fact that I found such a video on KZread! Really honest and inspiring. I can understand perfectly your trouble on composing with 90mm lens if you are a 35 or 50mm user. I have the same trouble but to the opposite! I am using a Zeiss Planar 1.4/50 on my apsc camera (80mm equivalent) for ages and when I need tochange to my EF-S 24mm (38mm equivalent)for wider shots I am always having trouble about what to include in the frame! Longer lenses demand different perspectives and composition techniques. As for the sharpness, I agree with you. I am always trying to unsharp my photos (with grain and negative texture on Lightroom) a little bit because the Planar is too sharp for my taste.

good video, one interesting point you made about focussing with this lens, as a side note, with the 75 noct. they actually suggest it for the SL, or a digital M as the focus peaking and magnification of the Live view helps enourmously with focussing, esp. with using it wide open!; and don't worry about having a lot of out of focus images, it is the focal length which is doing it, any vibration causes motion blur, hence the out of focus, I shoot with a Nikon Z6 and using the 105 macro lens, you CAN'T hand hold it, esp. in macro range!, it just magnifies the vibration soo much!, but is a great portrait focal length, but everyone to their own taste, some like portraits, others landscapes.

Matt, I loved your family photos on Ilford HP5! I'm now inspired to do the same thing with my family. While I also like HP5+, I might go with T-Max 100 instead for the sharpness and tonal range. I'll probably use my M3 with 50mm (type IV) Summicron and my favorite Leica 90mm which is the Tele-Elmarit. It's an f2.8 lens (single coated, 4 elements/4groups) nicknamed the "thin" or "skinny" because of the narrow lens barrel. There are Canada and Germany versions and the lens has a really Leica-ish rendering quality that I absolutely love. Priced (currently) in the mid $300 range, It's the least expensive "real" Leica 90mm that you can buy that actually gives you the "Leica look".

I may have "too many" 90mm lenses for my 0.58 M6TTL. None bought new, of course, and two bought from KEH. My main 90 is a 90/2.8 Tele-Elmarit "fat" from 1973. I was a little disappointed in KEH as they showed a picture of the more desirable "Thin" 90mm f/2.8 Tele-Elmarit-M that was introduced in 1974, but I've never been unhappy with the results of my "lesser" 90/2.8, so I'll keep it until I win the lottery and can afford a better lens. It lives in my little Domke bag with the M6. Later, when I got a Visoflex and bellows, I wanted a 90mm lens with a removable optical group, so I bought a LTM 9cm/4 Elmar from 1951 (according to the Leica Wiki) that I've only occasionally used, but it was pretty cheap from Tamarkin, so I keep it. It flares very easily, but makes for pleasant images, if you're not too concerned about critical sharpness. The optical group is so tiny! Using the 90/4 optical group on the Visoflex bellows is a bit of a challenge, so when I saw KEH had a 9cm Summicron 1st version (the one in your video is the 3rd version) I bought it (and the right parts to make it work with the bellows). My 90 summicron has no serial number, but, based on the looks, I think it might have been made in 1960. It's a very "gentle" focus lens. Not actually soft focus like the Thambar, just the limits of 1960 fast lens technology. 15 aperture blades does make for very smooth out-of-focus areas. It's fun on the Visoflex bellows with my Fuji XE-3 for macro images of flowers and other things where sharpness isn't very important. I wonder if the lack of a serial number means it's a very valuable prototype? I doubt it. I have the 1.25x magnifier for my 0.58 M6TTL, and without it, focusing any of the 90's is nearly impossible. Even if you have a .72 M6, if you want to stick with a 90/2, you might want the magnifier.

How confortable is to shoot with the magnifier wearing glasses? I got the 0.56 so i could shoot with glasses and always been afraid of the 90mm because of that.

This is my dilemma, I love Tri-X cuz it's a bit sharper than HP5, but the shadow detail oh HP5 is so clean! #filmshooterproblems

I know everyone does it, but do you have to use such a shallow depth of field when your showing the lens? You can barley see anything! Maybe thats just me
