I hope that ABRP can sort out the bugs. It is astonishing that the legacy automakers have billion dollar R&D budgets but still have the primitive guessometer GOM after all these years 🤔. Meanwhile a software start-up is developing software that calculates in real time taking into account elevation along the route to your destination. 😎

I'm pretty sure the only reason Tesla has this functionality built in while the others don't is because they control and monitor all their charging stations in real time whereas everyone else is relying on a mish-mash of other chargers that they have no reliable data on. Basically, they don't want to tell you to go to a charging location and none of the chargers work. It's very simple software wise, not so simple liability wise.

I've been using this method for a few months with my e-golf for a few months now .. and so far I've been very impress .. there was one time when I'm driving up-hill and going againts a very strong headwind and when I arrive at my destination, it was within 1% difference from the original prediction of ABRP, showing that it takes into account the elevation change and weather condition .. my only complaint at the moment is that sometime it can forget to tell us which road to take when the road splits .. you have to look at the maps to know for sure ..

I used it a lot on long trips, I think you have to be a bit careful with your saved plan, since sometimes you might need to end the navigation and restart the plan to force it to recalculate. I sometimes had “my position” in the plan, sometimes the fixed point, and that caused a bug when reinitiating.

My experience with ABRP was similar to yours. It selected some chargers away from the motorway and ignored some obvious chargers at motorway services 😱. I figured out that it was assuming that the chargers were only installed for one direction of travel ☹️. It aims to provide advanced features but fails on basic operation, so I turned it off. By contrast Google maps found the motorway chargers but the process of entering chargers along the route was clunky. ☹️

I wonder if this is a recent bug. I've been playing with ABRP a lot since ordering our ID:3, looking at some of my common long range routes. Recently it seems to be avoiding the obvious motorway chargers. This didn't used to happen a few weeks ago.

I have only used it for two 320km trips in an ID.3. I used as bluetooth (BLE) dongle( vLinker MC+). It did give me peace of mind and I saved time by just charging enough to get me home. I did not see the information in the instrument cluster, only in the screen, perhaps this is a new feature.

Good test. It shows that E-Mobility is still in pioneering mode. ABRP in my test under IOS crashed much too often and also the quality of navigation is poor. Also the bug you are reporting within your summary, is a real showstopper for real world use. The method "add waypoint" is not working because if you are getting a re-route due to road block, it will try to navigate to the waypoint which makes no sense. Please also test the app "PUMP". Interface is much cleaner but I have no experience on its quality.

Getting live data obviously gets the all in all use from the battery. Including heating and accessories. Besides the charger map not being up to date I think the VW Navi isn't that bad, too. It's just less informative on SoC within the screen. I planned some trips with ABRP on the web. And had same issues with chargers on route. Some obvious point we're skipped and put out of the way for easy routing.

About the different state of charge in ABRP and in the infortainment. It's probably not the same in ID3, but in my e-up the value for state of charge that you get from the OBD isn't the same as displayed in the cars infotainment. I'm just guessing but the reading from the OBD maybe include the top and bottom battery buffer? And for me ABRP showed the OBD reading that differed from the infotainment. It would be awesome if ABRP could guess the degradation also.

  • @BatteryLife

No, it is not the buffer. Soc is not as easy to read as you think. Not every cell is the same. So it is an average. And manufactures change the display of the soc for the customer sometimes.
