Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
With gas prices rising worldwide, we all know this fuel isn´t reliable long-term. And for many, cars are just so bulky and consume too much gas to keep up.
That´s why companies like Lectric are working tirelessly to bring us car replacements like the one-hundred-mile folding electric bike in today´s video.
And stick around until the end for a look at our honorable mentions.

I don't see it replacing a car. You can't drive a bicycle in three feet of snow at twenty below 0°F or load half a dozen kids into one. But it looks like it could be practical in the right conditions as a run about.

Many of us face having to use interstates. Sondors Metacycle and a few others make affordable EV's that can keep up with interstate traffic. But, they require registration, motorcycle license, insurance, etc...
I am a DIY e-bike builder (4 bikes: 2 mid-drive (3,000w 52v 25ah, 40mph, 750w, 52v, 42ah, 32mph), 2 front hub, 250w and 350w both 36v). I have followed Lectric and have been a huge fan of theirs from their start over 2 yrs ago with their XP 1.0, and viewed over two dozen reviews of the 1.0, 2.0, Lite and now the premium. Have also viewed reviews of several other excellent fat tire folding offerings. I bought and received a white $799 Lectric XP Lite about 3 weeks ago and thoroughly satisfied with it. Looking only at the reviews and specs of the Premium, I fear that the practical benefits that Premium supposedly offers for its $1,800 price tag, might be better/cheaper had by alternatives even within the Lectric lineup. For instance: a) 50-100mile range: By buying a spare battery for the Lite or 2.0, or by me opening the controller cover and strapping a 14-20ah pack onto the back rack (I build my own packs for 25% less money over retail), I can get the same range as the Premium for less weight, and $$$. Also if range ends up being the Premium's forte, then why fit it with range sapping heavy wide fat tires? (It's sort of a rolling contradiction.) b) Folding/Transporability: the 75lbs weight, and larger folded dimensions of the Premium pretty much makes portability almost pointless for the Premium (Premium owners will likely never fold it for loading into vehicle. It's folding occasion might only be for winter storage). c) Power/Performance: Impressive spec wise, with its mid-drive motor, hill climb comparison reviews the Premium versus the 2.0 showed the 2.0 rider consistently beating the Premium to the hilltop and hardly breathing hard, while Premium rider huffing and puffing with full throttle and max PAS setting. The Premium's weight, low wattage mid-drive motor plus the too conservatively set torque sensing PAS forces the rider to add a lot of pedaling force to get up the same hills that the 2.0 conquers with ease. Also the Premium's weight makes the rider's pedaling effort seem more inconsequential (and thus more futile). As for me, Once I add my sprung Selle Drifter Royal seat, $20 fenders from Amazon, and strap on my $250 48v 14ah home built onto my Lite's rear rack (I got the luggage option), I'm good to go! (I will be removing both batteries and seat/seat post before folding and loading the 37 lb Lite into the back seat or trunk of our car. On the Lite, I never felt a need to go past its 20 mph (32kph) top speed. (For 40 mph I have my 3,000w DIY'er).

Claiming 100+ miles for a 75-lb bike with a throttle is wildly overstated. You might get that if you are a light rider, riding at low speeds, in the lowest pedal assist setting, on flat terrain, and never touch the throttle. But probably not even then.

Even adding an electric car to our assortment of vehicle options is tough. We need a van for the whole crew of 7. We need a vehicle to tow. We need a car that takes gas for long road trips to remote places for just the 5 of us. We need at least 3 running vehicles to go in seperate direction on any given day. Then we get winter. We need the AWD blizzard runner. And we like having at least one spare car, since all of them are around 10-17 years old with several well over 200k miles. We're inside the belt way of our city, but the busses stop running two miles west, long before the belt way runs out. Sure, it's MN so we actually do have shoulders when the snowbanks don't need them, but that also means we have serious pot holes that sometimes bend rims and suspension parts on the cars. Put a bike in that mix and hope the 3-5 mile commute we do over three freeways that don't have space for bikes or the rough rail tracks that act like speed bumps (they're way overdue for maintenance) and you have a no go on any replacement of a car as even possible, other than occasionally if the weather is just right. Love the folding bit, though. That would let us take it in a trunk when we need work done on the car and we can leave the car with a shop and come home on the bike. Our last fix took over 6 months... so now we can't afford even the cheap model of one of these! D:

The main problem is that there are so few pathways along side roads to ride the bike. The pathways that do exist along side roads are often cut short and don't allow continued riding without risking going onto roads and impeding traffic. I live in an urban area, but still it would be very dangerous, if not illegal, to ride to the nearest grocery store 4 miles away from my home..
@mrbr549

Very true! A few areas of the country have a very good system of bike trails/walking paths that would be great for an electric bike, but most of the country just doesn't. Since many areas of the country are either poor or going bankrupt, I don't expect bike trails to be high on their priority list either.

Coool
I have been building MID-DRIVE folding e-bikes for about 6 years...ever since I decided I wanted one and couldn't find anything on the market that suited my needs. I started with a 350 watt / 500 watt peak and have evolved to a 750 watt with about a 1300 watt peak. Does it make sense? Of course, it does. I designed my own "grocery getter" rack. I ride the 4.5 mile round trip to the grocery store/shopping center and get all my fresh food in less time than I can drive to the store. I don't park the bike. I walk into the store with it. I use the bike and the rack I built for it instead of a shopping cart. So not only do I spend ZERO in gas for these short trips, I save time which I use to PREPARE the fresh food I eat for a fraction of what it costs for packaged food or restaurants, or worse, fast food. I'm healthier and have more energy and stamina. 100-mile range? 50 if you use the throttle? I would simply ask have you ridden a bike 100 miles? Probably not on a regular basis. Range is nice but it comes at the cost of more weight...batteries aren't light. I ride daily. I also have an electrical outlet most places I go and when I return home. I can plug the batteries I have in and charge them. On the rare occasion, I might need 100 miles of range, I can carry an additional battery and / or charger. And a 75lb. folding bike is "barebones", not with racks, etc. Add those things, along with a seat you could actually ride a hundred miles on, and you're well over 80lbs. Ever try to lift an 80lb. e-bike? Let alone CARRY it anywhere? The ones I build are around 40lbs. with a realistic 50 to 60 miles range, top speed over 30. Smaller, more portable, fits into the smallest of vehicles, easy to handle and with a 300lb. capacity. Same price as the lectric, I applaud lectric for their wonderful success story BUT there are faster, lighter solutions if someone is interested in that sort of thing.

@@dekotarock Sort of. I convert bicycles to electric bicycles. Either a person's existing bicycle they are comfortable riding or a person "tries on" bicycles until they find one that they are comfortable riding and one that fits their wants and needs...for example a folding bicycle they can stow on a boat, in a car, airplane, etc. The person buys the bike, the mid drive motor kit, the battery and any accessories, like racks, bell, ergonomic handgrips, seat, panniers, etc. I disassemble the bicycle's parts that need to be replaced with the "motorized parts", reassemble with the motorized parts, install any accessory items, route, adjust and manage cables and wires, and road test. Most hardtail, (no rear suspension), solid front fork, and front fork suspension (shocks) bicycles are able to be converted. Some require a rear rack to hold a rectangular battery versus a battery mounted in the triangle between the seat and handlebars. This way, I'm providing the services, tools and skills a person needs or wants to fulfill their desire for an ebike that fits them, their use case, and their budget. The best comparison I can make is something you have custom tailored versus something you buy "off the rack". In this way, a person gets the most value with the fewest compromises and is part of the process to create their machine. An "ala carte" motor and battery installation, disassemble, reassemble starts at $400.00. I only work with Bafang mid-drives, BBS02, 750 watt, and BBSHD 1000 watt "kits". 48 volt battery configurations are advisable with 52 volt batteries possible but require some additional programming. For most people, the additional cost of the battery isn't justified by the incremental improvement in performance and possible shorter longevity of the motor. I hope that helps you.

Unless the electricity comes from wind, solar or hydro-electric, I know the odds are fossil fuel are being used. @kmshark12
2 жыл бұрын
From everything I've read (no first-hand experience) - you can't easily compare the watt-rating for a hub-drive to a mid-drive due to how much more torque is available for mid-drives. It's possible that a 500watt mid-drive performs better in many circumstances vs a 750watt hub-drive.... even if it's a geared hub-drive.
@Branfaol1
2 жыл бұрын
@@kmshark12 it a weird thing Mid drives in general have more torque then hub but that has more to do with power like when going up hills and pulling things , also it's that initial be "push" you get when first engaging throttle. Wheel size can effect that too with smaller wheels you can get more torque, but have to work harder to get higher speeds. Larger wheels you get more speed less torque. Also torque ratings are hard to accurately measure on bike and tend to be a ballpark. My bike as a example says it can do 80nm of torque I've seen 500w mids with less but to be fair I've seen 1500w with less torque and more speed. But my main point is the price difference between a 500 and 750 isn't that much doing a 750 would have made it much more appealing 750w being the cap for a class 2 bike motor but it still has power to run efficiently as a class 3

As a lifetime motorcyclist, I've ridden through 70mph winds, rain, hail, and snow-packed roads. an AWD bike would make it more feasible at times... A small trailer behind the bike might make shopping trips possible. BIGGEST issue I see is SAFETY. Cars, Trucks, Buses and Semi's are Lethal to Cyclists Everyday and therein lies the problem, TRAFFIC CONTROL.....

Hello John W, thank you for watching!
I mean its perfect. I can fill it with fuel in minutes. I can take my family with me, fill it with shoppping or carry diy equipment. I can use it in all weather, cool on hot days, warm on cold days and dry always. And then there is this.... a bicycle. A lesser version of a motorbike.

I gave up my motorcycle for an e-bike, after years of motorcycle riding. I ride on the sidewalk a lot now and nobody says anything. I don't have to be out there in the street risking getting hit by a car as I did on the motorcycle. That's the main reason I switched, afraid my luck would run out. If I see a guy riding a bicycle out in the street with the cars, I think he's a fool. In my city the sidewalks are mostly empty because everyone is in a car. Anyway, i get away with just about anything on my e-bike, cops just ignore me. I have a trailer attachment for groceries, my dog, or whatever. I also have a milk crate zip tied on the rear rack as my basket. As for weather, I wear whatever is appropriate , including a very nice rain suit. I pay nothing for gasoline, taxes, insurance, or parking. Repairs are like nothing, I change my own tires too. I bring my bike in the house at night and plug it in to charge for the next day, no problem. The electrical cost is a pittance, chump change. I have a spare battery ready to go as a backup. I use two Kryptonite locks when I go to the store. On the downside, my range is only about 40- 50 miles, so I don't try to go on road trips to other towns. If I need to do that, I'll rent a car. This thing saves me tons of money and it's fun! I'm car free and love it. This is not for everybody, so stupid people can go out and go in debt for a 40 thousand dollar car plus all the other expenses, including hundreds/year for insurance. AHAHAHAHAHAHAH

It seems to be an nice bike with the 100 mile range but I would like to see a e bike not quite a motorcycle but more like a moped style with turn signals head light and tail lights and get 48 mph for secondary roads. Where I live is 40 to 45 mph anything less your a moving target on the road.the juice bike is the closest I’ve see but needs a little more power with longer range. I would need 150 miles per range. The battery technology is. It quite there yet maybe in a few more years will see a price drop and cheaper technology and longer range and quicker charge times.

You’re looking for an Onyx or a Huck, speed-wise. But an ebike with a 150-mile range simply doesn’t exist right now. Anyone who claims different is trying to sell you their ebike.

@@marktroup2978 It's possible to get 150mile range full throttle ebike but you would need at least three 20aH batteries for 48V because most ebikes use 20wH per mile.

the Lectric bike design is a wonderful version, the design process to get to a a design that gives us all the important options so we have the flexibility of a sort of all in one design takes days of many drawings. for me as a long term cyclist, that tall handle bar stem does not give sufficient strength, in case I need to ride from on road to the end of a bumpy farm or bumpy gravel road or trail as part of my ride to work. as we are not all fortunate to have smooth roads and trails, I think the smaller fat tires are ok, and I do love the mid drives efficiency, but I do not know why most all electric bikes are not putting 2 or 3 front chain rings for even more efficiency? I do like there being a front and back rack as we all need such transpiration where we take and bring our tools for work, or able to carry grocery's , I was liking a old design of other early brands that had the foot cargo plywood steps where you could take a back passenger, or some quick connect trailer. I am guessing like the old VW's used bias-plus tall tires that fat tires do already add a lot of shock absorption, that a front fork shock might not be as important as a cheaper mid frame shock, it is also important to have frame sizes for taller people, while I think I will not need a folding bike, however if one rides 100 miles, and a small car gives me a ride home after a party even for us small town folk it still is a good option. and I will say I am looking for a transportation bike, rather then be with a cool hot mountain bike

Don't think a family can use it to replace a car unless all can ride and each person has one but then there's the weather, but, for 1-2 people, yeah could replace a car with rain and weather clothing it could work. My biggest problem with ebikes is the cost, most good ebikes start 1500-2000 bucks. I built my own 24" fat tire trike for about $800 n thats a fat tire.every trike I've seen is around $2500-$3000 for a trike, i don't see how they justify that price? That's like a $1900 profit on a $2700 item. I payed 500 for a 24" fat tire trike 169 for a motor kit and the first batteries were led acid for $65 that work fine but a lot of wieght, changed to lithium. It surprisingly works great, i ride it 10-20 miles a day, so how do they justify the price? I need a trike, health problems but would like a 2 wheeler...

It would be much better if the e-bike was designed with 3-in tires instead of the 4-in.
I will believe this ebike can get 50 miles for full throttle if the battery is released to be 48V at 25aH bare minimum, otherwise it will not travel 50 miles on throttle if one factors in load weight, road terrain, and environment temperatures. Too bad the batteries do not have option to work separately because that would allow you to solar charge one while using the other.

At the 2:00 mark the rider is riding against traffic. This is dangerous and illegal!
@davidsmith2509

It is against most laws, but I disagree it’s dangerous. I rode a standard bike to work for fifteen years, mostly against traffic so I can see what’s coming. One time I rode a short block with traffic and a passing car clipped me with the side view mirror, no problem, but scary cause I didn’t see it coming. I always used a route that entailed the least amount of vehicle traffic. Had very safe years of riding not exactly following all the rules, but respecting pedestrians and drivers.
