Thanks for uploading that. Covers very useful information, and there may not be any other videos out there. Especially was useful for truck drivers at the end of it. Wish it went a couple minutes longer.

They teach double clutch, but it's faster/easier to float gears and it won't hurt a thing if you do it right. Great video and a very clear explanation of how it works.

This is a good video. Why the transmission slings oil and doesn't need a pump, and how towing can damage it was something I didn't know. I noticed that none of the gears are helical like in my five speed car transmission. Probably helical would have forced using less durable types of bearings, or there were other drawbacks. An advantage of helical gears is less noise, and that probably just isn't important for a ten speed transmission.

These gearboxes are NOT synchronized, and the gears shift directly, there are no dogs. This means that helical gears would not work, as they would have to "walk" rotationally to mate into gear

Did you even watch the video? You're talking about sliding-mesh. The guy just said it is a constant-mesh transmission, and you can clearly see it. Correct, it is not synchronized, but incorrect, it DOES have dog gears. The instructor calls them more formally as "sliding clutch" gears. Further still, newer transmissions actually have helicals in the back box. Again, the instructor mentions that the transmissions the students will work on have helical back-box gears and this older trans still has spur gears in the back.

With helical gears there is an axial force - the gears try to force themselves apart. So you have to take that into account when designing a transmission, the gear bearings and the transmisson casing needs to be able to handle the axial loads. Bearings that could handle the load would probably take up more space, so this is more compact. The advantage of helical gears of course is smoothness and less noise. That's why race cars have straight cut gears, the case needs to handle much less force, and thus can be made lighter

I also have an RT-613 which is the same as the 10 speed but has another section in the back for deep reduction thus having 3 reverses and 13 speeds there are 15 speeds but two overlap .. The heavier 13 speeds are 10 speeds with a Direct / Overdrive air controlled splitter.

You have a damaged sliding clutch dog teeth or worn sliding clutch gear teeth on your main shaft gear. Maybe worn bearing on input/main shaft..Or possibility of worn fork or shift bar housing... detent broken. 1st You have to pull the shifter. See if there is any loose broken parts. Then pull the top cover.. if the issue isn't there.. then the transmission has to come out..😫. Usually most issues are in the top cover...

Hi. My truck is a 10 speed manual (Eaton) the gears stock was on high range (I was told that this was a minor issue) But The mechanic told me it's a big damage, they need to rebuild it for $ 3500 without labor!!!. I agreed. Then I found out, that he replaced it with another one, that one doesn't have a cooler (my transmission had one) tell me please if what the mechanic did is right/okay?. Should I accept this transmission ( the new one without the cooler)? He's working on the truck now, haven't finished yet.. I still have time... should I accept what he did or not?? Please reply 🙏

hello great video - I got a ? if you could help , I got a 2007 Freightliner columbia with a 10 speed trans. when i first crank my truck there is a rattle/grinding sound coming from the gear shifter and that will go on for say 2 or so hours and then it quiten down ALSO it seems to come and go through out the day...the only time i hear the noise is when i 1st crank up AND in 10th gear riding no more shifting, I hear the roaring.....I was hoping you might have an answer of some kind..! I do ask around, the most common answer i'm getting is- THATS A 10 SPEED FOR YOU - its wearing like we do the older we get....but when i got the truck it didn't make the noise like it is now , maby it is starting to wear - i can respect that. I got a lot of knowledge of the truck if you got a ? please ask ....THANK YOU

Now teach em about cheap ass pai and Chinese gears that don't have the keyway cut in the right place !! And they can't get it in gear or out !!! And don't forget to teach em about the used one some guy bought that's never been into but the air valve interlock plunger has wear Mark's indicating its been turned over. (Nothing wrong with that except that people lie about it) ETC ETC ETC. Then teach about those Spicer SST series TRANS !!! Now we're talkin transmission !!!
